- During a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, accused Waukesha parade attacker Darrell Brooks requested to represent him in his upcoming trial. "Yes, I do. I would like to represent myself pro per," Brooks answered the judge when she asked him if he wanted to represent himself. "I've already said it on record, to represent myself as a sovereign citizen."

I also dated a guy like that. It was the darkest time of my life. I have never been so on edge or angry or frustrated in my life. My soul was being snuffed out and the last final gasp of me saving my self was breaking up with him and cutting him out like a cancer. It took me years to rebuild myself from that man.

I love how the prosecution knows their case is so open and shut that they’re not even paying attention to this garbage.
The DA said in an interview afterwards that they mainly focused on anticipating and fighting his antics to protect the record against a possible appeal. They knew that they had video evidence of him mowing down children with his car - and video of the same car stopping and going at the command of the driver so as to dispel any notion of accident. They all but knew that any jury who would see that would convict. It was just about catching all pitfalls of the legal system on the fly, so no minor procedural thing could be spun up on appeal.
They paid close attention to EVERY aspect of the case, including this.
I have watched hours of this guys antics in court and had no idea how brutal of a crime he actually committed. I just saw the crash footage and have not a single word to describe how much pain I feel for those families. This guy is a demon.

When he says he didn't understand what his lawyers were doing, and why they wouldn't file certain motions, what he means is he refused to accept the truths they told him about the legal process.

I would HATE to have to be a juror in this trial. I have a feeling if he has his way to represent himself, the jury members are going to get extremely frustrated with this guy. I would ALSO hate to be his lawyer.
It would only be hard in the sense of time.... As a juror simply stare forward until the moment you say he's guilty.. Plenty of videos circulating that proves he did the crime.

Apparently, these Sovereign Citizens use some kind of old Maritime rules to justify their ridiculous actions.
This guy just can't make up his mind about who or what he is. In this hearing, he says he is a sovereign citizen, but during the trial he takes offense when the judge refers to him as a sovereign citizen. When the police arrest him, he tells them his name is Darrell Brooks, but in the trial he objects every time he is referred to by his actual name.
This hearing was the moment Darrell Brooks lost his own case.

I love how there have been hundreds and hundreds of court cases everyday all across the country for well over 100 years and he thinks that he's found a secret loophole of changing the use of 1 word and he will not be charged with destroying a community
Brooks was the most valuable member of the prosecutions team. His tireless work helped seal this case tight to ensure justice was served.
Its amusing to see people that are slick and good at manipulation think they can represent themselves and just completely fall on their face in courtroom settings.
We didn’t see anything like that today, so I guess I’m still looking forward to that. He’s about as slick as sandpaper.

There is a lot of education involved in law. It's not a perfect system and innocent people do go to jail. You definitely want someone who understands how to move through the system innocent or guilty.

Throughout his trial, Darrell Brooks continuously attempts to claim the so-called "Sovereign Citizen" defense, albeit, at the same time he also continuously invokes his Constitutional Rights, in other words, Darrell Brooks tries to have it both ways. (i.e.) He claims to be a Sovereign Citizen and therefore he is not an American Citizen, but he also demands his Constitutional Rights as an American Citizen.

You would think that but....
Sovereign citizens are brainwashed in their community groups to believe that they know the laws and their rights while lawyers, judges, police, etc. are misinformed as to what the law is and it is their job to educate them. That is why a lot of sovereign citizens travel around with a mountain of irrelevant court cases and unofficial paperwork. I am not surprised that he dropped his lawyers, even when he doesn't understand what they are doing.

Brooks is going to be a contentious defendant. He is going to fight everything the court says or does. I live in Wisconsin and I am looking forward to watching this trial.

My thoughts, exactly. I could not be a lawyer, if in fact I was smart enough to be one. I could get stuck with people like this. From what I've read, it's very difficult for a lawyer to quit a client unless the client requests it.

There are circumstances that a lawyer can say that they cannot keep on representing the defendant, like if the defendant tells major lies to them, or tells them that they did actually commit the crime or any other reason that could mean that a lawyer can no longer represent their client in the best possible light or without prejudice.
This judge is incredibly capable and incredibly intelligent. She is an examplary judge.
Those attorneys dodged a serious bullet. In fact, they dodged a full-auto A10s worth of bullets. They should be happy.

This judge has incredible patience, practically begging a murderer not to commit a legal blunder. My favorite comment, "What does that mean to you, sir?"
Even when the judge asks a straightforward question he seems to not be able to give a straight answer. Not that it matters now.

this was a truly prophetic post. as of adjournment oct 11, 2022: out of nearly 190 objections, mr brooks has been sustained 6 times and overruled 180+. about half the time, he requests "grounds?" after the prosecution has already specified.

A friend of mine "represented" himself in court for a small weed possession charge. At the time, the amount of weed he had was supposed to be a maximum $75 fine, due to decriminalization. He ended up serving 7 days in county.
"I think I'm better served representing myself"....... famous last words!

"Sovereign Citizen" movement has fallen all the way into the sewer. Jesus. He cannot understand basic information and yet he wants to defend himself for no reason at all. This is going to be a real learning experience for him. Prisons have libraries - maybe he'll use one.
Doesn't matter if he represents himself or not. No attorney can get him off. He will be convicted no matter who represents him. This is just all a formality at this point.
@@johnlyn1 True, but at least a competent attorney knows what to watch for in the case of potential mistrials or appeals. Not that anyone should root for him, but many walk on technicalities.

I knew a guy like this.. he called himself a "jail house lawyer". We ended up evicting him because he was always causing problems at our leasing office. He would bully and try to intimate us. He represented himself and made a major fool after he lost twice..
This is from back when the judge was 20 years younger.
I believe those attorneys were very capable of dogging the biggest bullet of their lives.
This gentleman will find many new friends in prison.
This case is going to become a case study in universities across the country. Why you really shouldn’t ever choose to represent yourself.

I love how sovereign citizens understand, but fail to acknowledge the fact that the law of whatever locale they may be in applies to EVERYONE, whether you accept that law or not. At this point the Judge realized the next several weeks would be hard to deal with.
This trial is going to be a 💩 show. He is going to torture the families and witnesses and it makes me sad for them. 😢
