    Tunca (Analog Obsession developer) is an inspiration for me, the fact that he’s just one guy but he can keep pumping out these plugin is amazing. I followed him since the days that he used to sell his plugin, and getting clowned in KVR because his “low effort” and buggy plugins, but since he does Patreon, his coding skill definitely exponentially improved. Nowadays, None of his plugin is buggy, and run with low CPU usage on my old macbook!

      I have been following his work since the selling phase too. I did have troubles with his "rare" plugin at that time (insane amount of cpu usage and a weird bug which made my input level loud as hell). After a year or so, he really fine tuned and matured his production.

      I read all the slack on some of the audio forums. At first I was a bit stunned, but actions speaks louder than words. He makes plugins, offers them for free and getting better all the time. Nothing wrong with that, everyone has to start some place.
      Anyway, in my cases, it turned into admiration, I always have had a sweet spot for one man armies :)

    • @natedavid3873
      @natedavid3873 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yea but r they just reskinned digital eqs and compressors or does he actually try to simulate the hardware cuz i have my suspicions

    • @jaffasplaffa1
      @jaffasplaffa1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@natedavid3873 I've done some coding. He is definitely using Juce to program these plugins.
      Juce is a developing platform for plugins and all kinds of audio related apps, it comes with simulations of all kinds of transistors and more, he might be using some of those, but still have to put them in right order, as the hardware unit. It's a lot of work to make plugins in general. SO actually you do not need to do your own measurements and simulations.
      I don't see nothing wrong with using simulations that comes with Juce, I am 100% sure that many bigger companies does that too. The plugins are basically free and he is not promising anything, like "perfect emulation" and what else have we, which we are told by some of the big developers. Not even they do real simulations. Check out Dan Worralls channel for examples, like for example Harrison channel strip, which promises to sound like the hardware, but does eq cramping, which doesn't exist in analog world, has no saturation, like the hardware has. Basically it is absolutely nothing like the hardware and they are actually telling you that it is and charging you for it too.
      So I really don't see why people are criticising him, for something he hasn't promised, like you do here. They are all free and nothing was promised. You should probably get yourself a copy of Plugin Doctor and then go to town on some of the developers who actually lie to you and also charges you money.
      I installed a couple of his plugins. I like them. I also tried some of them in the past, didn't like them too much at that time, but he has advanced a lot.... And once again, they are free...

    Another Analog Obsession patron here. I frequently use the plugins made by AO, and Comper is awesome. Other great plugins: OSS, BUSERse, Distox, Konsol, LoadEs, etc. I don't like some EQ plugins, though, because for EQ, I prefer a more modern UI. I mean, sometimes it takes too much time to read the UI "How are these knobs in the parametric UI arranged." Next to plugins from Analog Obsession, I use the cleaner TDR plugins. Another thing about AO is that some saturation plugins produce noise in the low end, even with oversampling turned on, but luckily not all.

    I think Tuncas goal or intention is not making money out of this but he just likes/loves developing plugins. So he encounters the development process from a whole different perspective than the big companies. Not like "what am I gonna make this time that seems new (but probably isn't) so it can be sold well?" but more like "what am i gonna make this time that just works well when mixing and gives me opportunities that a may not have had before?"

    I'd love for you to do a review of the Kush Clariphonic plugin. I've been using it for about 3 years now. When I bought it, I had just finished up a mastering job for a client. Because those songs were kinda etched in my brain pretty well on the day I bought the Clariphonic plugin, I decided to revisit a couple and see if I liked the plugin enough to use it when mastering. I thought it sounded fantastic. I contacted the client for whom I'd just delivered the fully mastered album (she already told me she loved how it turned out) and asked her to listen to a couple of her songs again. I sent her two versions... one the previously finished master, the other the new master with the addition of Clariphonic. She preferred the Clariphonic version on both.
    She and I have a very friendly relationship so I told her about the new plugin I had bought and said I was going to remaster all her tracks because I thought the Clariphonic versions were better too. It was a 13 track album and I sent her 26 tracks in the end. 13 with and 13 without. They were just labeled A and B (I mixed them up so it was truly blind). She picked the Clariphonic version as her favorite on all but one of the songs. It wasn't long before I ordered the hardware version.
    Now I know before you even look at it there will be things you don't like about the interface. It's an EQ and it doesn't list frequencies. And you probably won't like that it only covers the upper mids and high frequency ranges. But you'll like that there are no fake screws drawn on the GUI, so there's something to cheer about, right? Anyway, I think the thing sounds absolutely gorgeous.

  • @AutPen38
    @AutPen38 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There's a pretty good reason why plugins from the big companies are usually quite conservative in comparison to the stuff put out by little guys. It's the same issue in most industries: Everything has to get greenlit by every department, such that everything is basically "designed by committee". e.g. If the marketing department says "We don't understand this new feature. Can't you just put out something like the last thing we did, as that sold quite well and we can use the same template in the adverts?" you get the expected result. See also: cars from major manufacturers that more or less all look the same, and movies that just have a series of sequels. Big companies didn't get big by being original or taking risks. They got big by churning out cover versions of the greatest hits.

    Default PC path is C:\program files\common files\vst3 which is one of my DAW existing VST paths (obvs). Took 5 rescans to find it there. A pain of an installation 😢
    A choice of installation path would be great, the alternative folder browse option doesn't let you browse back beyond 'programs' whatever that folder is as its neither my x64 or x86 one? ...not able get to any existing VST path?

    I am a tad confused relating to auto gain. The dude from Tukan Studios made some points about not including it. Personally I liked the feature, however believable as far as logic not so much

    Analog Obsession is great, Rare or Rare SE is a really great Pultec emulation, with oversampling option, almost on every of my mixes and masters love it. The SE Version with mid-side option, killer.

    • @rickmassimo6192
      @rickmassimo6192 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I loved the Rare SE but then without warning it started outputting really really loud, totally clipped, totally distorted. I'd close the session, reopen it, and it would be fine for a few minutes and then the same thing would happen. I had to stop using it. Did that happen to you? Anyone else? Is it fixed? I'd love to go back to it.

      @@rickmassimo6192 I didn`t had that that issue yet, hopefully it stays like that. The only bug i have is that i can`t use the on/off switches independently.

    "Why do big plugin companies fail to do what this one guy does - the thinking???". I think its because they're only big on the balance sheet, but small where it matters to us - customers.
