Whether you’re religious or not, you’ve gotta admit, old Christian paintings go unbelievably hard. We really have lost some aspects of art when people stopped making art like these.
Damn dude you dont know the downs of trying to make a painting, not even including the cost of materials and set up for something like this, i get it your trying to say here but do you really blame us? Who has this much free time man
I can assure you artists are making works just this stunning, just this eyecatching, just this thought provoking today. They're just not sponsored by the church or state anymore, and they're mostly painting digitally, so a lot of their works are hard to find outside of art-centered spaces. But I can PROMISE you they're still out there, still creating.
you can see they were truly inspired in their art (buy you can still find art like that today) If anything i say intrigues you, I advise looking at the video series why we can trust the bible by DLM Christian Lifestyles, as well as the video by Reedemed Zoomer one 10 arguments for God. But the way I see it If everything had a cause, nothing would exist because before we could get to the present, an infinite amount of events would need to happen first, which is impossible. So there needs to be a definite start. Since life comes from life and not nonlife, that definite start would be a thinking feeling life, God. We can see attributes of God in us like our ability to reason and love and feel. As well as there are things that I believe are objectively wrong (like murder) and in order for things to be objectively wrong, there would need to be someone with an authority above us to set said morals in place, which would be God. Like any other historical source, the disciples and other eyewitnesses of Jesus life, miracles, resurrection and that he is God, held true to their claims till death, even though their claims didn't benefit them and got them persecuted and killed, making them reliable sources. The gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) are some of these eyewitness accounts. As well as there being Roman (nonchristian) writers who wrote about Jesus' execution, proving his existence. God is good, so sin and evil is when you disobey God and his will. God loves us so he gives us the free will to choose what we want to do, even if it's wrong. However, God is still just, so he can't leave evil unpunished. He is so just that all who sin aren't worthy of his Kingdom. And we all sin. Think about it like this, a lot of pain and suffering in the world is caused by us, whether big or small. God loves us and doesn't want anyone hurting us. But in order to remove all the pain from the world, He'd have to remove us as removing the free will he gave us isn't just. God cared for us enough to meet us where we are. As whilst we were still sinners, God came to Earth as a man (Jesus), lived the perfect sinless life we should've lived and paid the price for our sins (death) and defeated death when he rose again on the third day, so that we can have peace, salvation, eternal life and a relationship with him. And all we need to do is repent (express remorse) for our sins and follow Jesus. He cares for each one of us enough to die for the sins of each one of us (crimes he didn't commit), so he cares about people (including you) on an individual level too, that's why he wants a relationship with you. Romans 5:8-9 New International Version (NIV) "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him!" God gives us the free will to choose to follow him or not. However, when you follow him, you allow him to work in your heart to give you peace and joy and to make you a better person. But if u refuse to follow him, God honors your free will and choice to do so. However, that means you are claiming that you can live a good life without Him. So when God is judging people and their actions (as he must as He is both good and just) all the sins of the unbeliever are weighed against them, because they claimed full responsibility for their actions and choices. But the believer has accepted the gift Jesus gave in paying the price for their sins, so they are weighed as blameless. God doesn't force you to follow him. He gives you free choice, but the different choices have consequences. God wants us to follow him because he wants to have a relationship with us, as we are his children who he loves dearly. So believers meet God in heaven to live eternally, because they followed him. And non believers are to be judged for their sins and since everyone sins, they are thrown into Hell. That's why believers are called to share this message so that people accept Jesus and can be saved by repenting their sins and accepting and following Jesus. Jesus lived a life helping those who were sick, poor in spirit, and hurting. He lived his life poor when he could've chosen to be born rich. This is why I trust in God's goodness and love for us, even when i don't fully understand some things This is why I believe God is real, loves you and you can put your trust in him. And though there are people who twist religion to hurt others (Jesus warned against false prophets and scribes we should be weary of), I'm not going to let the corrupt nature of some people ruin my relationship with God. There will always be people who try take a good thing and use it for evil, so even though there are many times of people using the Bible for their own motives, I can trust in the God who was willing to face physical and spiritual death for me even when I didn't do anything to earn it, who wants to grant me peace and joy and who emphasized loving God and loving thy neighbour.

I interpreted the painting a different way. Everyone is praising and throwing flowers at him but he seems distracted and unappreciative of their support. Instead he looks at God’s crown as something he wants for himself, as that one victory isn’t enough
@@madic15the thing about art is that it’s open to interpretation. Whether or not that was what the artist intended for the work to mean, it can still be interpreted differently :)

What alot of people dont know about medieval monarchy is that the kings and queens drew their authority from god and heaven and everyone (including themselves) believed god had given them the role of protecting their people from harm.
That's how all tyrants have convinced people to obey them, pay them taxes, etc. When you tell people that God gave him the power, then no one questioned them lol.
@@jenm9099Lol way to prove your ignorance. The Romans, Persians, Greeks, Egyptians, Assyrians, didn't need divine backing. And that's not even bringing up the fact that a monarch's divine right to rule ironically comes towards the end of the Medieval era.
@@jessiemeisenheimer8675 depending on which places and eras of the antiquity, they did use divine aspects to insist on the legitimacy of their rule tho egyptian rulers were considered deities themselves, and in mesopotamia u had king-priests (not sure of the name in english, i study in the french language) as for romans and greeks they also used divine protection to assert their power (im thinking of how julius caesar and augustus claimed protection from venus vixtrix and mars ultor respectively) of course over centuries and millenia the relation between divinity and rulers changed, so im making a very broad generalisation
I never cared much for art, but your channel has opened my eyes to nuances I never have before noticed. For the first time in my life I want to go to one of those fancy museums and truly learn from these works. Thanks for enhancing this middle aged man's life.
Our pastor recently gave a sermon about what it means to live your life for Christ. He used the illustration of his son playing sports. He was in peewee football (American football played by little kids) and he scored a touchdown. That kid immediately stood up while all the stands and his team were cheering and he looked to find his Dad in the crowd and started waving and making sure he was watching. All those eyes praising him, but the only eyes he cared about were his dad’s. This painting reminds me of that. Who’s eyes are we playing for? Who’s eyes are we fighting for? Where do we look for affirmation? Who’s opinion actually matters to us? Really powerful.
You realize the crucified statue is black and in shadow because the rich guy slaughtered innocents in his name, right? But I do understand "Living your life for Christ" means killing people and getting church money, yes. That much is clear.
I love paintings 19th century and prior. There is soooo much more than meets the eye. So detailed, and purpose in every detail. Hard to find art like that nowadays. One of my favorite artists is Gustave Dore! He’s amazing
There's a moment in the book of Revelation where John (the alleged human writer being shown the future) bows down to an angel and tries worshipping it. The look on the human king's face is exactly the look I imagine was on the angel's face xD "I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had been showing them to me. But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your fellow prophets and with all who keep the words of this scroll. Worship God!” (Revelation 22:8-9)
"no matter how high your crown may put you between your fellow man, it will always be below the crown of thorns" Such a beautiful painting, i have never been touched by art as deeply as this one.

the flag in the background working as the halo for the christ’s head goes incredibly hard. I like to think he’s not just humble but that he’s thinking about the horrors he ordered, the death he sowed and what the christ would think of it
And most importantly his riches. Remember, "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
I always love these sorts of paintings. The level of devotion and love clearly held by the artist is amazing and adds an extra layer to the paintings. And I'm not even Christian.
"The only crown above his". That brought a tear to my eyes when it also echoes (to me) whenever I see a king on the cross. That crown of thorns on earth; and a majestic aura in eternity.
Intense. I couldn’t see the the King at first but noticed the darker area looked foreboding or such a contrast to the rest of the painting. Then noticing the face of the decorated king there’s SO much in his expression. I can’t figure it out. It almost looks like he’s embarrassed/sad/fearful/angry and in awe all at once. Thanks for sharing once again
I don't think that was the intention. I think it was showing how kings and leaders would use religion, especially Christianity, as their "platform" to gain loyalty but secretly desired to be higher/more beloved/more legendary than Jesus or God. Even if it meant making themselves martyrs. He envies that crown. He doesn't respect it. He knows that every king before him has used the same platform to get to where he is, but he wants more. And every leader around the world since has used religion of some sort as their platform to encourage blind loyalty. It's a haunting painting truly.
@katrabbit this is unlikely interpretation of the painting. It seems really to be your own impression based on your own prejudices. No doubt most kings were greedy men, but the scene depicted in this painting depicts something else entirely. Below him he has many beautiful women throwing flowers at his feet, the architecture around him is stunning, he rides atop a majestic horse, his men follow him closely behind, he is adorned in a golden suit of armour with a golden crown, he has much to choose from to pay his attention. Yet of all these he fixes his attention to the image of Jesus, which due to the nature of the painting even the viewer does not notice right away, making the direction of the kings attention only that much more impressive, this is an extremely clever detail as this makes it so that not only are the people in the painting focused on the king and do not consider Jesus but so does the viewer initially.
@@katrabbit further, we see his own banner behind the image of Jesus has its art doubling as the halo for Jesus. The halo is pointing out in all directions, signalling the source of all this grandeur, and as all the people see the king as the source the king only sees Jesus Your interpretation is based on a glance and a prejudice, there is no proper artistic interpretation being done.

He made many pieces regarding history and religion with a somewhat critical eye. - The name of the painting being "Two Crowns" also leaves room for interpretation, as kings would conquer other kings. Dicksee made no distinction between the crowns in that title, just "two crowns" essentially being shown as equal. While his subjects are celebrating his conquests, the king could be looking to the crown of thorns to show there's still one crown he hasn't found a way to conquer yet. - The painting is set in medieval Europe, but was painted in 1900. So research the different royal families across medieval Europe. Which were and still are closely related to each other by blood and marriage and have a dark history with using religion to their advantage. - Research "divine right" in medieval Europe. Kings at that time claimed to have a "divine right" given to them by God himself, which in turn meant no one but God could judge them unfit to rule. And since they gave themselves their own "divine right," they were the only ones who could take it away... Suspicious 😅 An obvious example of them using religion to stay in power while equally having zero respect for their deity, considering they would make that claim for such selfish reasons to begin with. - During this time period, the religion of the land would change depending on the religion of the king - meaning they viewed religion as more of a political party and would use it as their platform to conquer land and demand obedience. Examples of this are seen throughout medieval Europe, but most people start by researching English kings. There's so much more to go into... But that's sort of the foundation for why I see something different depicted in this painting.

@@ma.dianemanalo3625everyone who is willing to stop wasting time.
you can see they were truly inspired in their art (buy you can still find art like that today)
If anything i say intrigues you, I advise looking at the video series why we can trust the bible by DLM Christian Lifestyles, as well as the video by Reedemed Zoomer one 10 arguments for God.
But the way I see it
If everything had a cause, nothing would exist because before we could get to the present, an infinite amount of events would need to happen first, which is impossible.
Romans 5:8-9 New International Version (NIV)
"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him!"
God gives us the free will to choose to follow him or not.
This is why I trust in God's goodness and love for us, even when i don't fully understand some things
This is why I believe God is real, loves you and you can put your trust in him.

Our pastor recently gave a sermon about what it means to live your life for Christ. He used the illustration of his son playing sports. He was in peewee football (American football played by little kids) and he scored a touchdown. All those eyes praising him, but the only eyes he cared about were his dad’s.

Even a king has respect for Jesus ❤
I don't think that was the intention.
I think it was showing how kings and leaders would use religion, especially Christianity, as their "platform" to gain loyalty but secretly desired to be higher/more beloved/more legendary than Jesus or God. Even if it meant making themselves martyrs.
He envies that crown. He doesn't respect it.
He knows that every king before him has used the same platform to get to where he is, but he wants more.
And every leader around the world since has used religion of some sort as their platform to encourage blind loyalty.
It's a haunting painting truly.
@@katrabbitWow 😮
The halo is pointing out in all directions, signalling the source of all this grandeur, and as all the people see the king as the source the king only sees Jesus
Your interpretation is based on a glance and a prejudice, there is no proper artistic interpretation being done.
@bucko3353 As there is a lot to explain, I'll give you the same response I gave on a different comment.
I'm explaining how I interpret the art piece based on my knowledge of religion and "politics" at the time, as well as some of the artists' other works.
Since art is made for the viewer to make their own interpretation, I'm just adding another point of view and personal opinion as everyone else here.
I highly recommend you don't take my word for it and research and compare reliable sources yourself.
If all you do is just Google, "What does Frank Dicksee's Two Crowns mean?" You'll get multiple other people's own opinions as well.
So rather, I refreshed my knowledge of:
- Frank Dicksee, the artist himself and his other works such as 'The Funeral of a Viking'. That piece was made in 1893 when pagan beliefs such as the Viking funeral pyre were incredibly taboo, but Dicksee openly explored paganism and wanted to showcase the Vikings relationship with death and the afterlife as an alternate belief to Christianity.
I’m religious and I got so touched by this painting ☦️😞🙏

@@Thecelestial1 agreed but was Christ also not a man, the statement is not wrong.
@@wilsonclark9009 Yes, he IS a man. That’s the mystery about him and how his sacrifice was able to pay for the sins of all mankind. He is not just a man, he is the God of the universe. We can’t truly understand all that he is, but to only view him as a man is a severe misunderstanding.
The art, the music, and the captions making me feel all the feels 😢🥺❤️
Worried about his own judgment day after war!!!! And remembering the sacrifice of the king of Kings!!!!!!
Sadly, no more people have hearts like this king. A heart who focus only on The Cross.
I don't think that was the intention, but I could be wrong.
Kings and leaders, especially at that time, are well known to have used religion as a platform to bend their followers. Religion was used as a tool to put those in power that could be easily manipulated, as well as easily manipulate others, and to select those they wanted in power after them.
Many kings wanted to be worshipped as a God.
He envies that crown. He doesn't respect it.
He knows that every king before him has used the same platform to get to where he is, and he knows the fates of those men were horrible, but he wants more still.
@@katrabbitis this supposed to be a constructed opinion, or informational? If info, whats your sources?
@hyekat I'm explaining how I interpret the art piece based on my knowledge of religion and "politics" at the time, as well as some of the artists' other works.
@@katrabbit this is some interesting information! Thank you!

Then fund the arts. Advocate for teaching arts in school. Encourage young people to pursue art when they want it. I'm tired of people mourning art when it still exists, when not enough people speak up about systemic underfunding of it (in school systems and governments), when AI garbage trained on human artists' work gets all the attention. There are many artists making amazing illustrations and paintings, but not enough people are paying attention.
