She was criticised even for THIS speech because she went off after Scooter Braun and Big Machine label.
Now that Kanye West is going through the same thing and peeing over Grammys... nobody has anything to say.
The thing about Taylor is that her fans like not only her music but also respect her impact in the industry, both with Apple, Spotify and her current contract with her label: her advocacy has changed things for millions of artists.
Taylor had a huge impact in the negotiations between artists and streaming companies! And we don’t see people talking about that...
When Taylor announced her new record deal with Universal Music Group and Republic Records, she coupled the deal with an unusual provision: As part of her joint contract with the label, UMG must promise to hand over to artists, on a non-recoupable basis, a portion of the windfall from its Spotify shares in the future.
Regarding Apple Music: She demanded that Apple make sure artists were compensated during Apple Music free trials in 2015 and went on a three-year boycott of Spotify over the relatively meager royalty payouts from its free tier.
It is a technicality... but the way Scooter handled it was also very not ok. He posted a post legitimately about owning and Buying Taylor, as a joke... and I'm sorry but that is in no way ever a joke.

She is also upset about Scooter Braun owning her music because he bullied her online, it wasn't just being against the business model.
The main thing that sucks is that Taylor was never offered her masters first AND Scott (label creator) knew that Scooter bullied Taylor. She even said that Scott witnessed her crying about things he has said/done.

I think she will start her own record label as you mentioned. Because she's always been a huge advocate for new/independent artists. Also, she has her dad and Tree Paine. And she's always been a damn good business woman and she knows what sells and stays.
It actually turned out to not be such a smart investment after all because once Taylor re-records her old music, the value of the originals will decrease significantly and BMR along with Scooter will lose a lot of money.

Just for the record, Taylor actually didn't even have that bad of a contract. She has control over her publishing rights which is super important and it the reason why Scooter and his investors won't be able to earn much from her catalog. Because biggest chuck of money doesn't come from streaming at all, it comes from licensing of the songs (usage of songs in movies, commercials, TV shows...) And in order for song to be used in that way, it would need approval from both the owner of masters and owner of publishing rights. Since Taylor doesn't want them to profit off of her work, she has been blocking all synch requests, so basically she is blocking their main source of income when it comes to her catalog. They still get part of streaming revenue, but even in that section Taylor gets a good chuck of money because she's the songwriter on all songs and producer on a lot of them. That is why she's always advising new artists to write their own stuff, because that gives you at least some control over your music. But yeah, I think Scooter definitely underestimated her willingness to fight for her music, I don't think he expected her to block all synch requests and give up the huge part of the revenue in order to take a stand for what she believes is right.
I just wanted to clarify these things because I know many are not aware of how that part of music business works.
The thing you’re forgetting is that Taylor’s contract also includes that the owner of her masters (which isn’t her) has legal control over the licensing of her songs. It’s why she isn’t able to share recent videos of her performing her catalog unless she has explicit, written permission from Scooter. For example, her Paris City of Lover concert included many of her songs from past albums but she wasn’t able to include those in the recorded to TV version because Scooter didn’t allow it.
Every time she has wanted to use her catalog she has needed to get explicit permission to do so. And when she hasn’t, she has put Scooter on blast for it.
Taylor owns the masters for her current works, her last two albums - Lover and Folklore. She can use her songs in anything she’d like without permission from her Record Label.
@@piperlee4213 what you are referring to is Big Machine's argument that any kind of recording (like posting a performance of a song from albums 1-6 from an award show) would represent an attempt of rerecording, which she is not allowed to do until specific date (albums 1-5 will be okay for rerecording starting sometime during November). Technically, many from the profession - lawyers and musicians alike - agree that argument would not hold up in court but still there is a lingering feeling that they would maybe try and sue her for something like that, so what is happening now is that she is avoiding that scenario just in case, even though the chances are that their argument is legally void.
What they control is the original master recording, and since she is the owner of the song part of composition (because compositions are made of master recording part and a song part) she can give herself permission to perform the song whenever she wants. Because the master recording is theirs, she has to inform them of the songs performed and if they are recorded then they can try and use the argument I mentioned above and block recorded release of those songs - but she is more than free to perform them live. Basically she is right now just avoiding a chance that they characterize her uploads or any TV station or media outlet recording as an illegal attempt of rerecording. What Taylor for example wouldn't be able to do is license the original master recording without their permission, but that is a rare case in music business because any owner of master recording wants exactly that - to have the masters synched as much as possible. That's where the money is. Although, since their relationship is obviously not friendly, who knows what would happen. Doesn't matter much though, cause she is the one currently blocking the synch requests. Songs from Lover for example, as you might know, have so far been synched in movies and TV Shows because, as we both mentioned, she can freely synch them and know that she is the recipient of the revenue.

For me Billie Eilish was incredibly rude when she did her speech. The first thing she said was "Yall's speeches were long as f*************ck!" she immediately said when taking the mic. "Oh my god! F*ck! Long as hell!" right after Taylor Swift was on stage. Taylor talk about issues that should be aware of or concern her and it seems she didn't care at all or even listen what she said :/

Thank you for understanding and explaining the way record companies work and - that so many artists don't own their masters, and those who took issue with that, a couple of decades ago are no longer with us. PRINCE in particular (RIP), spoke out about this, and changed his name into a symbol, so that technically, the contract is null and void. Or something similar. I feel that they SHOULD have at least been honored by Taylor but I guess it's not as impactful, without feminism being involved.
Please don't misunderstand me here- I DO believe that artists should own their own catalog, and that there should be more awareness. I just get a little frustrated anytime I see a comment about "stolen albums". They were sold by her own old label. And it's all in the technicalities as you point out so well. So thank you for that.

You should look JoJo's mini doco on UPROXX TH-cam channel & hear about her career. The label she was with as a teen was terrible & they owned her voice & wouldn't let her release music. She wasn't able to release music for a decade until she finally got out of the contract after years of fighting with her legal team against her label.

Just a little side note: A lot of older artists are selling their masters to avoid fights over the rights and revenue after their death. If they sell it, it makes it easier to divide where the money goes to.

The mask comment was how Lana released poetry or something and had a signing where she wore a piece of crystal mesh as a mask (like the ones anti-mask people wear to say that they're wearing a mask, but it's got holes in it)
