  • hiHi guys welcome to Travelzilla. Please join me on a walking tour of the incredible historic city of ANGRA DO HEROISMO, located on TERCEIRA ISLAND, THE AZORES ISLANDS, PORTUGAL. The Azores is one of the most iconic archipelagos of the Atlantic. It is comprised of 9 islands: PICO, SAO JORGE, TERCEIRA, SANTA MARIA, GRACIOSA, FLORES, SAO MIGUEL, CORVO and FAIAL islands. Some say the the 1oth island is located in Brazil, the island of FLORIANOPOLIS (LOLOL). Just kidding.
    The Island of TERCEIRA is home to ANGRA DO HEROISMO, a city so important that is considered a WORLD HERITAGE SITE by UNESCO because it was the first major European city that resulted from the European voyages outside the continent during the renaissence era. ANGRA DO HEROISMO was the cpital of Portugal 2 times, it was a place of arrival for some of the most important navigators of their time as well as the birthplace of the liberal revolution of Portugal. Empreror PEDRO I of Brazil ( PEDRO IV of PORTUGAL) abdicated from his throne as emperor of Brazil. He left PEDRO II his 5 year old sone in his place and went back to Portugal to regain his crown as king of Portugal. It all started here in Angra do Heroismo. Pedro's saga to regain Portugal from his own brother, in what became known as the liberal revolution.
    In this video I take you on a walking tour of Angra do heroismo. During this virtual tour we will walk all over the historical center. We will visit places like SÉ Street and Cathedral, Almeida Garrett Sq, several historic churches, the statue of navigator VASCO DA GAMA, the city archives, the Duque of Terceira Gardens so on and so forth. I will tell you a little bit of my own personal history and also about the history of the city and how they are linked!
    I also talk about how ANGRA DO HEROISMO was a model city to Brazil. Most colonial cities in Brazil (then Portugal) were modeled after Angra, which is why it is a world heritage site. It represents the transition between Portuguese medieval cities and the cities built with major influence of the renaissance. walking tour angra do heroismo angra do heroísmo azores whale watching

      hello there......it is really nice to hear from you. If you don´t mind me asking, Is your last name "cámara" by any chance. If so we are definitely related! My 5th grandpa was a nunes gonçalves da cámara, he was born in Graciosa, migrated to Terceira, then to Brazil lol. We all descend from joão gonçalves zarco, whom I am very proud of. Not sure if you are aware of that. Anyway...going to Terceira was one of the highlights of my life. I need to go back there and make a proper supervlog for this channel. I was there in the pandemic, need to go back properly. I was there for 15 days! It was such an amazing experience! The cámaras have done a huge job in Brazil, some came directly from Madeira, others migrated in different waves from the Azores or continental Europe. I had the privilege of visiting cámara dos lobos in Madeira, where the name was actually created. Thank you so much for your kind words. Just so you know, my niece and nephew were born and raised in Calgary Alberta! 🙂small world!

    • @TRAVELZILLA
      @TRAVELZILLA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Olá marcos tudo be? Com certeza a origem era Portuguesa! De acordo com empresas de teste de DNA, 85% da população Brasileira tem descendência Portuguesa o que varia é o grau desta descendência! No Brasil tem muita gente com mais DNA Português do que em Portugal, são 5 séculos de imigração. O que é sub-avaliado é o número de açoreanos, há muitos mesmo no Brasil de norte a sul. Eu mesmo tenho descendência em 7 das 9 ilhas dos açores, acho que vou acabar encontrando ancestrais em todas as 9! Tb tenho descendência em 2 das ilhas habitadas do arquipélago da Madeira, mas aí não conta já que sou descendente o descobridor da ilha João Gonçalves Zarco (da câmara dos lobos). É muito interessante estudar todas essas influências portuguesas no Brasil. O Brasil é muito mais português do que as pessoas sequer ousam imaginar!

I need to go back to the islands asap! :-) Thanks for writing to me, please subscribe to this channel...all videos do have a version in both English and Brazilian Portuguese. • @TRAVELZILLA
      @TRAVELZILLA  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was just in Porto Alegre, Brazil which has a very heavy Azorean presence. Porto Alegre has a mixture of different peoples from different places such as Poland, Germany, Italy, Spain, sub-saharan africa, native-american, austro-hungarians etc, but the main component to the population is the Azores. Considering that the Porto Alegre's metropolitan area has around 5 million inhabitants, it is a huge influence. I was in that part of the world to film this yrs's xmas special for the channel. I went to a region called SERRA GAÚCHA which is located 3 hours by bus from Porto Alegre. I went to a town called GRAMADO, which holds south america's LARGEST XMAS CELEBRATIONS...the city goes mental for xmas and for easter...it is like the soccer world cup to them LOLOL! Even in places as isolated as that, there is a huge Azorean influence, and the oldest Azorean house ( still standing) was built 270 years ago! Please watch the xmas video in English ( there is a Portuguese version as well). This video is one of this channel's best videos to date. Usually xmas videos from one year only have views in the course of the following yr, so the video is new, but has almost no views yet it is a huge production! Hope you like it. I show the massive parades, shows, decorations, turning on of the xmas lights, drone shots, animation....it was all done by me! th-cam.com/video/36CQnwpzeqs/w-d-xo.html

      @@palmtrees89 lolol Edward Haynes, your name sounds very native to the Azores lol. Man it doesn’t matter where the Portuguese I speak is from I’m still a native speaker therefore the way I pronounce is absolutely, 100% correct. Secondly I’m PORTUGUESE as well as Brazilian and my family were amongst the first to populate the AZORES and MADEIRA. I actually descend from the discoverers of these islands In regards to the different ways to pronounce the Portuguese language, I think most people would agree that the Azorean accents are by far the most distorted amongst all Portuguese language accents. Brazilian Portuguese is the version that gives the Portuguese language the relevance it has, the way Brazilians pronounce is the most common not the way your Mather does I’m afraid. The way I pronounce Angra is perfect. Thank you!

      @@TRAVELZILLA First off. . .my father is American. .he served in the air force based at Lajes. . .that is where my name comes from. And you should know better that Azores have been Portuguese longer than any Brazilian Portuguese. You can't perfect what's already perfected in our culture. .only imitate. You think Brazilians would know how to play soccer if not for the Portuguese? Anyway, your video isn't a total loss. • @TRAVELZILLA
      @TRAVELZILLA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@palmtrees89 LOLOL funny how you, as an "American" who speaks a bastardized version of English, can be so critical of the way American Portuguese sounds like. You are a hypocrite you see. Azorean Portuguese isn't the standard either and that's ok. Who do you think you are to refer to these islands as your property? You are not the owner of these islands to say "my island" and stuff like that, let's be clear on that. My extended family discovered and populated Madeira and all Azorean Islands and I would never say these Islands are "mine", because they aren´t neither mine nor yours ok? So drop the attitude bro. The Azores belong to Portugal, not to you nor to your American father.
      You go on and on about Brazilians and soccer. I couldn´t care less about Soccer, not all Brazilians are the same and I am also PORTUGUESE. Brazilians today care more about politics then soccer, your info on Brazilians is old and outdated. You don´t seem to know much about Brazilian Portuguese, but know this...Brazilian Portuguese comes from the continental Portuguese spoken in PORTUGAL at the time. Continental Portuguese changed, specially after the independence of Brazil in 1822. After that, Brazilian Portuguese shifted once the Monarchy ended and was replaced by the Republic in 1889. It is still the same language, used differently here and there, that's all. I don´t know what the big fuss is all about. Clearly it is your problem, not mine. This Xenophobia of yours is probably a big influence of US culture in you and your family. Us culture is racist by definition. "Americans" tend to put people in a box and try to categorize everybody in made up classifications that make no sense. I was raised in the US, have family there (that migrated from Portugal, not Brazil)...tell me about it. Political correctness and identity politics spread around the world from the US and it is destroying our way of living all over the world. I understand where this xenophobia comes from since I have spent quite a large amount of time in the US of A. It used to be a lovely country. In regards to being of Portuguese descent my family comes from Portugal on both sides except one branch which is from Italy. I am very proud of my Portuguese roots which is why I will continue to make hundreds of videos about Portugal. I think that this rivalry between Brazilians and and Portuguese is stupid and should end. It is ridiculous. It is a biproduct of ignorance and nothing else. I think the way you've acted towards me is totally unacceptable. You've attacked me because in your sick mind, one can only be of Portuguese descent if they are not Brazilian. All Portuguese descendants are welcome except if they were born in Brazil, when clearly the country with most Portuguese people by genetics in the world is Brazil. That proves to me that you nothing about Azorean history. If you knew it, you would know that Brazil is deeply liked to the Azorean Islands and that Terceira was called Brazil before the country of Brazil itself. Brazil was the next big step in the expansion of the Portuguese empire after the Azores. Dozens of millions of Brazilians are of Azorean descent. Anyway.... I have ancestors in all 9 Azorean Islands and the reason I went to Terceira is because I wanted to visit some of the towns where different branches of my family came from and the buildings that have once belonged to my family or that my family (including many last names) helped building. The Palacio Dos Capitães Generais for example belonged to the TAVORAS who were my ancestors. The Canto family helped building a few churches and monasteries, the counts of Ornellas were my ancestors and descend from João Gonçalves Zarco, the navigator who has discovered Madeira ( of whom I descend 14 times).....I have deep roots in the Azores and will always talk about it because the history of these Islands are also the history of who I am. The reason why you attack me is because I am Brazilian, but you should go to the Arquivo Distrital de Angra do Heroismo and see for yourself that the majority of Azoreans that left, went to Brazil. That migration flow has happened for hundreds of years. Instead of rejecting Brazil you should embrace it because millions of Brazilians are probably related to you genetically and you should accept that! xoxo get over yourself man! :-)
