Sponges act like this because of the way they changed the water for 1.13. It used to be very linear, and wouldn’t fix itself whenever you’d remove lots of water. But well, sponges didn’t have that code anymore, so it didn’t matter and people just used sand or gravel. But now that old code doesn’t work that well with the new water code. Only really works If you seal off the area and spam sponges.
