In a perfect world..... you are human and put your family life out there on display FOR other people to learn by your ups and downs. Truth, it's a hard life and you are rocking it. I watch your channel because its real. I'm not a homesteaders never will be. To old and disabled. I also love watching your kids. Learning as they go, they are intelligent, caring humans who will be able to take care of themselves having real life skills. Keep rocking it.

I wanted to come back on here to give my 2 cents to the critics. I don’t know anything about homesteading since I was born and raised at the beach in So Cal. I couldn’t kill an animal unless I was absolutely starving to death. But I love this chanel and Mike sharing his family experiences as they learn along the way. It’s encouraging and I learn a lot. And you all are doing your best to raise your kids with Godly principles. I find it to be a beautiful thing. The people who have it all together just make me feel like I’d never be able to do it. I appreciate watching people who can show their failures and take me on a journey to learn with them the dos and don’t and what it really looks like to homestead from scratch so to speak. So just know my family and I enjoy and look forward to everything you guys share the good and the bad ❤️🙏🏼

no one can begin with all of the knowledge, experience and funding. A chicken coop can always be improved upon in one manner or the other and housing is only one of dozens of factors. Learn as we go and always strive for improvement! This gentleman is out here trying and that is more than you can say about much of the human population.

Greg reminds me of the goose my grandmother used to have! She lived within walking distance of the local college in the town I grew up in and he would act just like Greg does when the college students would walk down her street to get to the sports field. She used to let him roam free, but finally after several "incidents" of him protecting her yard she finally had to pen him up in the backyard. He never hurt any of us grandkids and he was fun to play with ☺️

I love the commentary you did on this video. And you’re right!!! Some people will find fault in everything you do but life and death are the reality of homesteading. I wish I had land for chickens but that’s for another time. I live vicariously through you and your family. So keep doing what you do so well. On a side note Your daughter is growing up to be a beautiful young lady as well as those handsome sons of y’all’s. You have a lot to be proud of Mike. I didn’t see Your wife but she is the woman behind the scenes sometimes. I look forward to your next video

Your goose is a fantastic guardian and protector. I did think about this though. You could've scooped those maggots into your chicken pen. They would've eaten every single one of them.
Don't ever get discouraged when you have a loss, just learn the lessons from it, and do better next time. That's how we all learn.

I enjoyed your take on the problems that can arise, as there are many. For me coyotes. No more free range chickens here. I loved my African gander named Godzilla. He was better than a guard dog until he started beating up my poor dog. There's always something to keep us on our toes. Good one.

I hope you didn’t take my comments as criticism! When I said I hope that you will someday have permanent coops, I really meant it! I want to see your family blessed with everything that you need. I know the heartache and trauma of losing flocks through my daughters family experiences. The worst was last summer when two stray pit bulls got into their electric pens and destroyed 30+ birds including layers, meat birds, turkeys, ducks and geese. All while my daughter and her 6 children watched in horror from their homeschool room just feet away from it. The previous year, Their guard goose, “Father”, became territorial after goslings hatched and attacked my grandsons when they tried to feed the geese. Father Goose thus became Christmas Dinner. Some lessons on the homestead are very hard indeed. It’s nice to see you moving forward proactively and nice to see Josiah helping you build the new coop. He is really growing up. All your children are such great kids.

(If you can stand it) You'd just made a carrion feeder for your chickens. Poke some holes in the bottom of the bucket and leave it hanging in your chicken area. The maggots that fall out will feed the hens.

Yes, sadly, there will always be those judgmental people. I call them salt in the wound people.
As I said, thank you for sharing honestly, you didn’t have to tell us about a mishap or sadness. This is real life for homesteaders-predators, weather & sometimes disease.
I’ve learned so much from you guys, because like Living Traditions Homestead, you guys talk about your successful endeavors as well as the not so successful ones & outright failures. Some are mean, some aren't. When I was a teen, our neighbors used to have me come over and feed their mixed flock of ducks and geese every time they took a 7-10 day vacation. At first, I was a little bit wary of the geese (I had heard stories of people getting attacked & wing beaten, it had happened to my mom when she was young) but they just never did that to me. I'd get in there, do my chores, & get out. They accepted that I just needed to do that each day, and I never did get attacked. 👍🏻

You are safe with me, I'm not perfect either! I haven't started with animals yet, but hope to soon. Since I am thinking of giving my garden a rest next summer, I'll probably get about a dozen chicken and six turkeys next spring. We can't have anything else where I live now. If my spouse decides to move us back to Nebraska next year, I can do it all! Our son has ten acres I can use. We are going to our son's house for Christmas and we will decide after we have a chance to look at homes in the area. I just have to be patience and I'm not good with waiting.

I don't have a homestead at all, and it's not anyone is just being critical of your content. Mike we all have little misshapes from time to time. But for some reason even though we might expect repetitiveness in many of the daily activities on a homestead. But it's almost like on your homestead after all this time! You sometime come across in my opinion, as if you still lack the confidence in your ability being a Homesteader. May you and your family continue to experience good health, growth, success and prosperity. God bless.

I had to get a second batch of 18 layer chicks recently because I made the rookie mistake of not having the brooder ready and keeping the chicks too hot while I set it up. I didn't realize it was too hot where I had them. It took less that an hour to get all set up but that was too long. I checked on them a couple times and they seemed fine. Oops! I've been doing this for 12 years now. My second set are fine because I had the brooder all ready to go. Lesson learned the hard way! Your meat chickens do look good. I understand that unfortunate things can happen. I felt really bad making that mistake with my layer chicks. It's never a good feeling to lose your livestock on the farm. I love ducklings. I've lost some of those too. I have the Khaki Campbell ducks too. I just love them! Yay, Greg did behave himself. I'm glad he didn't attack you Mike. Thanks for this!

I’m sorry for your losses. I’m here to give a suggestion. I saw where someone put the carcasses in a bucket with drill holes in the bottom so the maggots can wiggle out. They hung it with the chickens so they could eat the maggots as they dropped to the ground. A good protein source for your chickens and the other ones didn’t die in vain. 😃

So sorry for your loss on the little babies' chickens and ducks. Sad really but it is what happens on a farm. My brother got a broken arm from a goose who attacked him at a park. My uncle got bite on the arm, and it was not pretty from a goose also at a park. We tease them to this day. Had a friend who had a goose for a pet, just one goose. It was a great watch goose. No one went in the yard unless they were outside. This goose was real smart too. I was a kid then. Love your kids they are all so pretty and the boys handsome. Peace!

interesting to watch how the Dewawere Broiler does at a meat chicken and egg layer - Also interesting to see if the American Bresse crossed with the Dewawere Broiler would do as a homestead chicken for meat and eggs so you could grow your own each year - the Dewawere looks like it has a bigger body? I am sure you could do a swap with your friends at that have the American Bress this year and get a rooster from each other to try it - growing up on a farm keeping baby animals alive with mother nature is not alway easy not matter how hard you try - I remember as a kid having lambs in the warming draw of the oven and in boxes over central heating vents when their mother has rejected them and its been stormy and wet outside outside - we didn't keep all of the alive no matter how hard we tried getting up in the night to feed them

So far the delewere's aren't far behind the cornish in growth. We will see how well they perform and taste.

I have gotten attacked by one. That was not nice. My husband stopped them from attacking. He would catch them and hold them and pet them. They hated it. If they seen him they would run away from us

Can't believe you didn't feed the maggots to your chickens. They even have maggot making buckets that drops maggots down to the chickens.
