I worked in recycling my whole life. I just want to point out, it is a business just like any other business. While I prefer to recycle anything that can be recycled, it honestly, is not a solution. The process of making the material useable again, generates just as much pollution, and uses just as much energy, as it took, to make that material from virgin materials. And the resulting product is an inferior one. All it does, is gives corporations an option for a lesser quality material, to make their products out of. Resulting in, an inferior product! Which they sell, to us! And don’t expect that cost savings to find its way into the price tag. Oh no! That saved money, for using an inferior, cheaper material, finds its way into the companies profits. While we are left with an inferior product, that won’t last very long. Which typically, ends up in a landfill. While we go out and spend more money, to buy another inferior replacement. Which, don’t forget, used energy, and generated pollution, to create! Which is never calculated into the figures about “does recycling help”?
Now, don’t get me wrong. I fully believe we should recycle. I just feel it’s the best option, out of the options we are given! Much better option, is that manufacturers use different materials to start with! I can’t be the only one who notices that our grandparents washer and dryer, tv, and deep freeze, are still going strong. While the new one we just purchased, has already turned to rubbish. There is a reason for it. I suggest, the reason is more intentional, than, simply a happenstance. These corporations are making much more money. While out income is increasing by les and less. And we need to replace things, sooner and sooner. Yet, those in power want me to believe that they are concerned about the environment. Actions speak louder than words.

@@izzy1949 Oh yes, UPCYCLE!! Now that’s a program I can get behind myself! I have so many cans and canisters. A bunch. And I reuse for storage. And I just made a quilt out of old clothes that were too worn or had holes in them. The inside, instead of batting, I just used fleece pajamas. It is so warm, yet light weight! All cardboard and paper goes into my compost bin. Even my space heaters are from pieced together “broken” ones that people were tossing out. Up cycling is a real solution. Better than recycling. But even at that, manufacturers could do much better than they are! I remember when everything was in glass containers. And I remember tasting the plastic. Yet, here we are. Everything in plastics,

Its the same as having a Tesla. What did we save? What did it take to make the batteries? What will it take to charge the batteries? When the batteries are dead, what will it take to recycle them?

@@cbskip546 Exactly. They make a whole lot of claims, and majority just accept the narrative, never questioning anything. Majority of their claims are flat out lies. And, if you look into soil regeneration, the micro biome of soil, how plants interact with the micro organisms, and how they take the carbon from the air, down into the dirt, you begin to realize a whole lot more lies! Especially when you know that glyphosate/round up, is an antibiotic. And gmo plants, and the whole thing! It is very disgusting. And kinda scary. Knowing that those in power, have an agenda, and they are succeeding. God help us.

I can remember the time before plastic when milk came in cartons and glass bottles, your groceries were bagged in paper and there was no such thing as a 2 liter bottle of soft drinks. Was told by those in power that by switching to the plastic, we would be saving the environment by saving the trees. Never liked the plastic grocery bags but if you asked for paper, you got the dirtiest look from the bag person. I'm always amazed at how many plastic bags it will take to bag my groceries for the week, shaking my head because they'll only put one item in the bag for one reason or another. I take my own reusable bags to go shopping and have been doing it for several years. It's not because I'm so into recycling but tired of the cheap handles on the plastic bags ripping before I can get the groceries into the house.

For a while there, our recycling center was taking all types of plastics, but now they don't. Several months ago there was an article about how even some of those approved plastics are being sent to landfills anyway.
And then we can't get the plastic shopping bags from stores anymore, BUT you are supposed to buy Glad or Hefty or ??? store brand garbage bags in various sizes to put your landfill garbage in. Makes no sense at all.
And then you are NOT supposed to throw ANY light bulbs, no matter what kind, in your trash. You are supposed to wrap them up & take them miles away to a hazardous waste center to be disposed of...
Needless to say driving miles to get rid of three or four light bulbs? Makes no sense.

There shouod be more piblic friendly recycling programs and more access to help folks recycle and more often. Even if its just several recycling stations around towns like they have for donations. Some areas I see a fair amount of recycling stations and other areas where there is none. Then you have to hunt down places to bring recycling to. I called my county today, they only accept certain items to be disposed on certain times of the year!!! Which is better than nothing, if you cannot get your timelines to match up, its a pain 😵 I have paint I was trying to dispose of with our county's local Hazardous Waste office.

Amazed how non-recyclable our system is! I now use Smart Cat litter/made from grass (not clay, horrible smell, like cement/definitely not recyclable). I flush the solids from my cat, Awesome, and the urine-saturated clumps go into future flower beds.
I used to use World’s Best Cat Litter…it was great. But company uses GMO corn.
I inquired into this via WBCL website and the company response…not an issue!

So this is my advice. Your kids are to the age of being able to take on the recycle responsibility. Have them come up with a business plan to recycle as a family or even engage neighbors or other family members in it. This empowers them into thinking independently and as an entrepreneur to earn money as well as engaging good stewardship. I think this is important that we teach our kids these skills, as they get older they will develop leadership and teaching skills toward others. Oh and yes, I have a fall cleaning schedule and spring cleaning schedule, both inside and out. That way when it’s 100 degree outside, all we do is mow, feed, weed, and put away garden vegetables. Which is plenty. But if we do the main cleaning in the fall and spring as well as repair, and new builds, it makes it easier. Hugs and love from Texas!

My biggest gripe is Walmarts pick up packers use one bag for little items, so you have sooo many bags with a small this or that and then you have a pile of bags to discard…..I save mine to put greasy trash in and to use as containers for seeds, garden items, I cut them open and cover seedlings with them to maintain moisture.
If you save enough you can make woven matts with them as some charity groups do for the homeless to use to keep from laying on wet ground. There’s also ways to make them into bags….
Plastic bottles I take and make them into slow watering containers….when we go away I’ll put several in around plants with a few fine holes they keep the soil moist.
I’ve taken our Maxwell house coffee cans and used them for nuts, nails and bolts storage, some keep seeds and bulbs dry and I’ve taken ten of them and made into bird houses in our woods. I screw a piece of scrap wood to the back. I then make some small holes for ventilation and I make a circle on the lid for a doorway….unfortunately I can’t remove the name on it but I’ve tried preparing them by sanding and painting them with outdoor acrylic paint but no luck on it staying painted….I had hoped to have my grand children paint them as a art project…..
Some containers I’ve filled with natural items for bee and bug motels and hung them near my garden……
There’s a man from I believe the Philippians that makes really nice planters with plastic bottles and also takes plastic bags and hangs them on a pole and plants items in them…..I take fabric and make my own grow bags but you can use the shopping totes you can buy from Tractor Supply with farm animals on them and plant in them in around the garden and have portable containers with beneficial plants for birds….I’ve used Walmart $.50 blue shopping bags but the only last two seasons.
In my greenhouse I’ve planted veggies in boxes and then I plant the whole box in the garden never disturbing the plants and the box naturally disintegrates…..
I’ve saved plastic cups from parties and use them as seed starters, also containers from berries etc….
We all can use and reuse it’s just having a mindset to do so……my husband brings home scrap pieces of hard wood from building log homes….to be used in the wood burner but lol I stash the nice wood away and I’ve made planters , little tables for plants etc and now I’m cutting pieces 2 x 2 for a hard wood table top….I’ve taken old window frames and painted them stapled old fencing on it and made hanging drying racks for flowers and herbs…..

We were at a park in shelter with picnic tables. It had been rented out for the day by friends. There was a bin with 2 trashcans, one for recyclable items and one for regular trash. The worker came to empty trash. I noticed she threw both black plastic garbage bags into the back of her pickup truck along with the other trash she had already picked up from the other picnic areas. She stopped to talk and I asked her how does she tell the difference between the bags when she gets back to where she has to take them. She said they have to offer a recycle and a regular trash bin, however it all goes into the trash. She said that people really are not careful to separate the recyclable from regular trash and they do not go through and separate the recyclables. SO, what is the point of having separate bins if it all goes to the same trash pile!

I have several businesses and friends collecting jugs for me.
If you posted something a few times during the year you might get some takers.

And re-using, and re- purposing is always a good thing.

We've been living in RV parks the last 9 yrs & have recycled aluminum when we could. Only once in all this time has a park offered recycling of paper, glass & plastic. We just closed on our forever retirement property & we will definitely be recycling all we can. We will burn paper & cardboard & have found a place to take aluminum. The problem is plastic. I use cloth shopping bags, earth friendly, no plastic laundry soap (tru Earth) & buy in bulk when I can to reduce packaging. Once you get in the groove of reducing your usage of plastic it gets easier but sadly, it's impossible to eliminate it all together.

Mike, this has been on my mind for years and even more so this past year. I am passionately frustrated with recycling and overall the materials companies use to store products in. I have been eating clean for almost 10 years. I continue to strive to find the utmost quality of orgaic items to buy and consume. What drives me bonkers is the amount of plastic!!! Even the best products like healthy foods are in plastic containers vs glass, paper, cardboard, etc. Most of everything especially food products including organic ones are put into plastic containers 😫 I do my best to upcycle and working on growing our own food to depend on stores less. I wish more companies would strive to do better with selection of containers they store products in. I wish there was more planet friendly containers foods and all came in. 💜💛💚🌱🌎

My husband re-organized the garage already! We had a whole contractor bag of stuff to go out with the trash. We are in the agricultural part of a small town so we have their garbage service for our property. We have a pile of scrap metal on a palet along our property line. Out of sight, out of mind. Our city also picks up our recycle items every two weeks and garbage each week. Nice job keeping your property well organized and it's great that you recycle too. Yes, we are far too short sighted. Often our conveniences end up hurting us. I like what you said Mike. I keep thinking about our national debt too that we are making our kids "pay" back! I'll be impossible! Why do we do things like this for short term gain? So sad. The politicians can just say they gave us what we wanted. Did we really want this for our kids and grandkids? Brunch looked great! I hope you get relief Lacie in your left wrist from the chiropractor!

I feel ya Lacey! I was in a neck brace until I got into yoga. The neck brace helped mostly when I was a passenger in a vehicle or sleeping. I had several too, my favorite one vibrated. Then I searched YT for range of motion yoga…total game changer. I paused video on spots that hurt the most. Now no neck brace and the yoga is automatic when something hurts. I do stretches every morning and like to dance for back pain lol. I hope you feel better soon!

I feel for Laci with the wrist. I had a fall a few weeks ago and did what they tell you not to do which is tried to catch myself coming down on my right hand (also a leftie). Since I am quite obese that was slot of weight coming down on it. Broke multiple bones. I am trying to get my current home ready for sale but there are so many things that can't safely be done with one hand like operating a small chainsaw and other necessary tools to get this place ready. Very difficult to patiently wait for it to heal.
    Hope hers gets better quickly.

I just found out recently that your supposed to take the lids off of all bottles and jars or they don't get recycled. They aren't going to pay someone to take a metal lid off of a peanut butter jar. It goes into the trash.

We scrap for the extra money. People even call my husband to pick up stuff at their homes and some people will just put stuff in the back of his truck at work. We stocked pile it up when the prices are low and then when the prices go back up we take in a trailer full in.

I remember when our condiments and sodas ect. were all in the glass. In the 80s is when plastic seemed to have really taken off. I think it started in the '70s with Tupper ware. My son gets me and the changes I want to make. My husband doesn't like change so I have to ease him into it. If I can explain why I am doing something, he understands, he still doesn't like the change but he will get used to it. The change I decided to start with is my cleaning supplies. I am trying to use method and grove products. Grove is trying to get completely away from plastic and sales glass cleaning bottles (among other products) and then you buy the small cleaning bottle, put the cleaning solution concentrate in the glass bottle, and fill up the rest with water. Their products are supposed to be less toxic. I have to brag on one product for sure. We have VERY hard water and over the winter when we have to let the water run, my clear shower door is coated in hard water stains. I tried Windex as well as other products and that was laughable. I really didn't want to use CLR. I emailed a Grove representative and they recommended their shower and tile solution. I sprayed it on the glass shower door. Used a little scrubber I bought and my shower door looks new. I cleaned the door during a commercial break. I was back in my living room and the commercial was still on. THAT is impressive. The product has a nice fragrant smell to it. It is very suddel. You have options of various smells. Sorry, didn't mean for this to turn in to a commercial for Grove. haha

In our area recycling and trash can be picked up at your house if you want to pay a trash removal company to come pick up every week. But we take our to the landfill and recycling centers ourselves. The load with the recycling would need to be covered tarped down or you will get a ticket for a unsecured load. It actually saves us money taking it ourselves at the moment.

Mike I like your channel so much. Although I understand you see that metal as scrap metal but can I tell you there are so many farmers who hold onto a lot of that stuff because they use it for repairs. Many farmers just like you wear many hats and welding is a critical skill to learn. If you have a broken Barr way break out your welder, broken bucket on the loader break out the welder. Something to consider...

Yup, closets needed to be reorganized, and yup, some things were tossed. I questioned why I still hung onto an empty box. Course the collection of cleaning rags had become totally out of control. So some went to my son who always needs some for in the garage. ( confidentially speaking, I had some I had to toss) lol. Mid Minnesota here, and my gardening things will go through this inspection a bit later.

We routinely go to the dump for big items that won't fit in the trash, and we recycle as well. We try to keep piles at bare minimum (card board, lumber, large trash) because we don't want rodents or small animals nesting in them. It attracts trouble with critters.
Lacey, I hope the chiropractor is able to help with the pain you're feeling.
