G1W DASH CAM BATTERY REPLACEMENT WITH CAPACITOR (DIDN'T WORK)

  • PLEASE READ: After testing the SD in my computer, I realized that the last file was still getting corrupted. I tried numerous different firmwares and none of them worked. I suggest that you either find a replacement battery and use this video as a guide for replacing it (just solder in the battery instead of the cap and don't update firmware) or just buy the capacitor version such as this one on amazon: amzn.to/2j3UvSg.

The reason it may have not work is because the original with the super capacitor uses 2 super capacitors in series to increase the voltage to about the working voltage of the lithium battery. One super capacitor barely makes it to 2.7 volts and that is not enough to power the camera or to keep it powered in order to give it time to save the last recorded video. If you put two super capacitors in series you raise the voltage to what the camera needs to make it work. You can also make two sets of 2 super capacitors in series and put those sets in parallel to increase the charge capacity. I am using 4 super capacitors of 2.7v - 7.0F. The higher the farad the bigger the capacitor and the more charge in can hold. I don't own the same camera you are trying to modify here but the mod would be same for any device that needs a super capacitor instead of the lithum battery. Your only limitation would be the space inside the camera to add bigger super capacitors.

that battery looks exactly like the same that go into my Drone! g'work buddy! firmware upgrades on anything camera like is pretty much a necessity these days.

paradoxdesigns Fortunately the firmware update was very simple. Thanks!!

Dude thanks for the answer! A quick question :
Is it possible yo remove the battery or the cap totally and directly connect the camera to the car battery 24 hours? I mean do we have to have battery or supercap??

Hello, thank you for the tutorial. I was wondering if you could help trouble shoot. My camera would turn on for 5 seconds and then power off. When I opened the camera the battery was swollen like a ketchup packet. I thought that was the cause for the camera powering on/off. The camera still has an issue staying in the "on" position even with the installation with new battery. Any suggestions? Thank you

I just bought a cheap open box Black Box G1W-CB Black Bezel, upon receipt I plug to power but didn't turn on. I pressed reset with paper clip, it turned on but turned off and on every second, maybe super capacitor bad. Where to but that super capacitor?

I considered a super cap when my battery swelled enough to open the camera. It also pushed the card slot off the PC board. I had to solder it back together.

    Video Request:
Please do a capacitor upgrade video, but on a YI Smart DashCam.
I was looking into upgrading my dashcam battery to capacitor, but no luck so far.

A capacitor will work just fine.
The issue is that it's charged so slowly with the on-board electronics because it thinks its still charging a battery.
In theory, a supercap can be fully charged from the USB supply in a matter of seconds or minutes.
You either need to adjust the charge current resistor on the PCB of the dashcam. Or, integrate a voltage divider and diode system to more rapidly charge the capacitor.
    With my dashcam, I installed a 17f 5.1v supercap.
From 0v, it took about 45 mins to get to around 4v with the dashcams on-board charging circuitry.

    What cap did you buy?

I will have to do some research to find it again. Did you read the description? Ended up aborting the mission as I couldn't find a firmware that was compatible with the capacitor.

tried to replace the capacitor that came in mine originally, didn't work either. guessing it wasn't the cap that went bad.

motoforlyfe could the issue may be be the capacitor you are using? What voltage/capacitance is it? I have a G1W and a G1W-C. My battery on the G1W blew awhile ago. My capacitor on my G1W-C just failed too. I cracked them both open, and the circuit boards look identical. The G1W-C uses a 5.5V, 1.5 F capacitor. I ordered new capacitors and am going to replace them in both models.

update us on how it goes. tried replacing my cap with a new one (1F 5.5V), can't get it to charge up, cam just turns off when I cut power.

For me its the same problem, i even installed the little circuit which was on the lipos contacts, but the cam shuts down with an 5,5 1.5F and and 5.5 1F capacitor. It does not work.

I usually just start and stop recording manually, and leave the camera powered on, so the firmware failure wouldn't effect me much.

@@therealfox if 5.5v ,you can chage capacitor input usb 5v about 5sec first, 1f only have 1mah , can not save power ,save the file need about 20sec , try a 5.5v 10f or more f capacitor
