First off... That is an awesome design! I have been trying to design my own waxed canvas multipurpose sleeping bag. included a sleeping bag, inspired by the sierra designs back country bed, a poncho, a chair with removable seat pad/ knee pillow, and a log carrier. Now Thanks to your inspiration i can add hammock and debris bag to the list of uses. With two separate wool layers that can be used interchangeably with seasons the design would weigh between 8 and 12 lbs depending on the various portions of canvas and be fairly complex but very much within reason. I suppose i should probably learn to sew! lol
Comment: The Snaps, centered, restrict the size of the opening for a Cross member. Moving them next to the stitching would allow for a larger Branch on the foot. Or, change from snaps to "D-Rings" and a lashing sewn into the end of the tarp to allow for the Folded Over Closure or as a Tie-Out for What Ever you need it for. They could even be used to secure the Roll for transport.
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite bush craft channels! I wish I had discovered more bush craft things at a much younger age

This is a great set-up. I would only change two things about it:
1: For the waterproof, I would soak it in silicon instead of using wax. Wax and oil treated canvas has the habbit of oiling up other items pressed against it, silicon doesn't. Also, silikon is more fire resistant than wax or oil.
2: I would have the heavy duty canvas less wide than the waterproof canvas, so the ends of the waterproof are rolled/folded back onto itself by about 2" (5cm). This is because in set-ups like this, wetness can still soak in from the edge if one side of the edge is able to soak up water, like untreated canvas is. If the edge is on both sides water resistent or water repellent, this is less likely to happen.
Beyond those two points, this is awesome. I would probably keep the tube stuffed (even when it is rolled up and not in use) with three or four layers of woolen blankets as a bedroll.
I reckon it needs a third and/or fourth snap to help keep it closed when used as a sleeping bag. When you pushed your feet down it started to open up a bit.

I can see some changes id make and im already considering making one. Primarily, replace the snaps at the end with a couple sets of tapes as a tied closure isnt going to kick open if youre inside it. Also add some tapes along the sides just for a few extra attachment points to help secure it in a bedroll, attach an under quilt as a hammock, etc.
Will also be good for emergency stretcher.

That sir is a nice piece of kit. Years ago I redesigned my canvas bed roll cover so that it was multi functional but what you have there is exceptional.
The multiplicity factor is seemingly endless as the imagination. NICE !

First off...great stuff, love the channel, love what you do, love the camp roll.
Very multi use, very functional, chair would not be hard. Much like a flexable cutting board, with a handle cut out on both ends, 12x18 inches....the uses for it are near endless. something to cut food on, around the top of your bedroll for a water shed, something to kneel on/sit on, it makes a great snow shovel, it can move softer soil around, it can put handles on your fish, it can keep the sun off your head, and neck if you need it too. it's weight is next to nothing, its cost is minimal, I won't go winter hiking without it
The cheap in me also wants to say...the same thing can be done with a dollar store shower curtain, and a roll of duct tape. done differently of course, but the results...that one time can be similar
Being 5'6"...not tiny, but not large...medium in fact....I have noticed that it is easy to be stuck with larger, heavier stuff then needed, like an MSS...I am not the biggest sailor in the navy....it is nice that its there...all that extra sleeping bag, it does add warmth, and a pillow. but its always bugged me. having size options for something like this is nice, even if it is just small, and large...people over 6 feet, and people under 6 feet
Hutchins roll could save a life. In severe cold a foot of leaf material under and 3 feet on top with branches to prevent wind from blowing the leaves away, Crawl into the envelope in the middle of the roll and enjoy the insulation and warmth like a squirrel. I don't know how many know of Nesmuk or Kephart you mentioned. What mentors they were. I live about an hour from Kephart mountain.

Nice... id make it longer. My husband is 6'4" ... i like to kick by feet around and wrap my head up. Can add extra length on both ends, bottom to adjust length if ya get someone bigger or smaller 1 size fits all, either snaps ir buckles. At tge top more length if you wanted to stuff a pillow or make a pillow you can have extra fabric to fold and snap in a pillow, place to store wool blanket too. The ties or loops along sides to either attach sleeping bag or even to tie to a cot. Love the design and versatility and love that it can be for mat or to get in. Love both open ends my feet get hot. You cud add 1 more fold over wider flap thats loose ir ties as a top cover. If u stuff it and sleep on top you have an additional flap to pull over u or as a extra ground cover too or an awning

Great item, many uses. Got me to thinking about making something simular, but out of rip-stop nylon (or some such material). Yes, it won't be as "tough", but it will be lighter.
A short description of my experinece while watching:
1. Just saw the intro and already like the video - I love it when someone is happy about something ;)
2. You certainly can’t go wrong with waxed canvas!
3. not only protects it stuf (like inflatable mats)f from sparks but also just from braches and sharp stones on the ground!
4. and yes, of course, one side is waterproof - used that kind of feature on other equipment already!
5. Now, the raised bed idea is something! AND it can be insulated from below! Great one! Even hammocking is possible!

I really like the idea, but it seems like a lot of weight.
I definitely see it's usefulness. I guess the beauty to camping is everyone has a idea that makes them happy.
I do give you a hard time but I enjoy you channel. We have more ideas that are the same then different. Just may lessons were lessons from boy scouts and hunting then army. Back then we went without. Didn't have has much fancy gear. Which is why I like bushcraft over modern hiking. You seem to stay on the side I like. Lol

Haven't read every comment, so forgive me if it's been mentioned previously...with the right length tent poles, or even supple branches it might even be adapted to a tube style shelter by running said material through the short ends.

This is kind of like a heavier, canvas version of Mors Kochanski’s scarf. I love it!
Just slide the ropes through the sleeves at the end and use it as a gathered end hammock. More stable than the trestle end that you demonstrated. All in all a great idea.
Improvised stretcher, dig a hole and possibly use that as a rain catch, then maybe heat rocks to place in water for a hot bath lol

That’s a very versatile piece of gear. I would want mine a foot longer.
I can see it being used as a hauling kit: Fold in half (hamburger bun fold, not hotdog bun fold), put rope through the end sleeves, and you have yourself a tote with shoulder straps for carrying deadfall sticks for firewood, or leaves/bow/debris for a debris bed (pile it by your sleeping site until you get enough, then set up the actual bed situation), so on and so forth.

Try a rope through each of the sewn end loops. Fold in half and use the rope to tie both ends together to the top of the tripod. Slip a branch through the loop formed by the fold and drop that down in front of two sides of the tripod. Viola, a camp chair.

Wax both sides and stitch the bottm right up and make seperate sleeves on the sides for the raised bed, and I'd buy it.

I was thinking of maybe some tie-outs so it can be used as a lean-to, but if one was to trap a small rock or marble near a corner that could be used as a tie-out point. One question though: what is the overall weight?
Any clue as to what the weight rating would be if using this as a raised bed or hammock? Definitely a nice piece of kit I will be ordering eventually.
