    I spent approximately 30 years working in the high-end offset color printing industry, all in different areas, but never too far from the press room! Loved watching this video! Brought back many good memories! The workers know what they’re doing and the shop is so clean! Thanks for the video!😊

      @john: yeah. Same here - sort of. Worked in the admin side of the business that did all this work. The first two weeks, for me, was the toughest. I had to get use to the ink smell. Had a headache for the first few days. It was a great place to work.

    What's really amazing is how that guy at the printing press can shlop around all that paint or ink all day and not get a drop on him.! Geez, if I had that guys job I'd probably wind up going home every day looking like a Picasso painting.

      Can confirm. Worked in a small press shop as a teen and the owner would just tuck his tie into his dress shirt and be fine doing whatever, while I would only have to go near a press to be covered head to toe.

      Believe me, he had a clean shirt on for the video. I have done every job you see here and this is a pretty clean shop for how old the equipment is. Most of the time, they have multicolor shirts they repeatedly wear! I does wash out on fabric over time, but not all colors do. I have one or two T-shirts left from up on press, both have ink on them-a dark blue on one, white on the other. They are 12 years old and I haven't been on the press in all that time! I kept them for painting!

    I love videos like this because they make me realize how much ingenuity and effort goes into making things that I barely even notice. It's a testament to the quality of life and the entitled mindset that most of us carry around every day: we appreciate so little about even the "disposable" things in our lives. 🥰

The last press I ran was a 40" 6 color Heidelberg with all the latest computer consoles. It was a great industry to be in as I was always working and the pay is great! I am 67 now and still dream I'm running presses at night.

      Yea I work in a custom box factory like this except we do not laminate cardboard like that just make paper boxes like cereal boxes and such but we are no where near as labour intensive. We just roll entire skids of sheeted paper into the printing printing press and die cutters. The only department that is this intensive is finishing/folding department as they have to hand feed the boxes into the machine to be folded and glued. We also cut our own sheets from massive rolls of paper but this company looks like they order their paper precut.

    Some of the machines are rather amazing. That also made it seem weird that with all that automation, it still appears that at certain points in the process the workers have to lift every piece of cardboard / paper manually.
    I thought the machine / method for making the cut out patterns in the cardboard was interesting.

      Some of it is eliminated depending on the machine manufacture. This is some machinery that is quite out of date, The newer equipment has eliminated a lot of the hand work. By newer i mean made in the last 25 years, those machines look like they could easily be 35 to 40 years old. However It can't all be eliminated.

    Why not print onto the cardboard directly and not use the paper cover, saves money.
    Why use ink in the area that is to be cut off, reduce and save money.

    • @markmiwurdz202
      @markmiwurdz202 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mike Dennington. You can print directly onto certain types of cardboard. A good example would be a one - sided board (like for a food carton/shirt box/breakfast cereal/etc.). The white surface for printing on to the outside and the reverse side, usually grey, for the inside. However, if the carton has to hold heavier items then the printed sheet is glued to a heavier duty (maybe corrugated) cardboard as in this video. Stay safe and well.

    • @sunship2
      @sunship2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can also print direct on corrugated board, but since the surface is not as even as the thin, coated paper like shown here, you must use another type of printing, called flexo. The quality is not near as good as offset. As to your question of why they print outside the used area: This is called “bleed area” and is needed to avoid white edges if the die cut varies say +- 1 mm from sheet to sheet, you need some excess area to be certain that there will be print all the way to the edge of a cut. This applies to magazines and books as well.

    My dad is a printer by trade. I don't understand how he can go to work every day and resist shovelling a handful of that delicious looking ink in his mouth.

    Ugh. Very little cardboard in any category is being shipped anywhere in North America. We are deep into a recession that's lasting for months onward.

    I mixed ink for a 5 color press. It was a challenge with metallic colors. Gold even gave the head press man a time after I got yelled at by him of course lmao

    I worked as a mechanic in many print shops in Toronto Ontario Canada. None of them were this clean.😢

      When I toured the print factory, I thought it would take a lot of work to maintain the rollers. You must have had a hard time working in the past.

      @@ZoomInProcess that was the press operators responsibility . Mine was to keep things operational and prevent break downs, if possible.
