I have the same awning. I've had it now for 4 years & it has served me well. I definitely recommend having two people set it up in windy conditions. Twice now I've broken the sacrificial hinge knuckles (they're deliberately made from plastic to make them the weakest point). The first time it happened, I was setting up at the beach. A friend helping me out, prematurely let go of the awning before I could weigh down the poles (using pole sandbags). The wind flipped the owning over my 4WD. The second time, I was on my own in what looked like a calm windless afternoon. But 30 sec before pegging the poles, a sudden gust of wind did the same thing as before, flipping the awning over my 4WD. Lucky on both times it only broke one knuckle and I was still able to use the entire awning w/o dramas. Easily fitting new knuckles when I got home. I now bring spare knuckles w/me. But I have also changed how I set it up to prevent this. As I walk around opening the awning, I now drop the poles as I come across them, & temporarily securing them down using one peg ea. I do this for each pole. Once fully opened & tied up, I then go back to ea poles & properly adjust them if req (angle, height etc.), & securing them further w/guy ropes. Since using this method, I haven't broken a single knuckle (Touch wood). Very early on, I've stopped using the built-in pouch for the pegs/guy ropes. As there is no way to lock the awning cover zipper (being only one), I was worried, someone can simply unzip the awning cover & steal the pouch of pegs/ropes. But I've since fitted RacksBrax w/the awning & easily detach it from my 4WD when not on a camping trip, & storing it safely in my shed
Yeh 100%. I just wish they were a little tougher. But you are right two person job and no problem 😉. Yeh I don’t use the pouch as I use Peggy Peg to secure it down rather than normal pegs. Thanks for watching
Hi bud, good review. About the hinges, they are intentionally made to snap if a strong wind hits it and lift it up. I’ve broken 2 and that’s the only damage. If hinges were made stronger it would bend and compromise the structure, I believe. But as you said, a part from this the awning is great. Cheers
Yeh that’s right. Would have been nice if they were a little stronger. Would just give some more confidence. Other than that love the awning it’s great.
Great review. I'm thinking about buying one for my van that I use for work and for camping (after I empty out the tools). I can't believe how fast you erected and dismantled it. Awesome. Again, a great video
Great review, wish I had saw it when I got mine. I got it for ease of set up if I was going camping on my own without hubby. I did a trial run in my yard,, no wind, was putting it down and a freak gust of wind came along, lifted it up and snapped one of the plastic hinges..I was gutted as I was due to go out camping the next day. Living rurally, I eventually managed to source some spares and now I carry several packs of them in the car.. love the awning regardless, although steel hinges would definitely top it off. Love the setting !
What I think with the hinges is, being plastic it gives the awning a week point. Somewhere to break if setting up or packing away goes wrong. If they were Alloy or Steel then the awning would bend and can possibly become unusable or worse do damage to your car or roof racks. The hinges are easy to buy and are small and light to carry around as spares. That's my thought anyway. Great informative video. Thank you. Do you have or are you going to make up stickers?
Yeh that’s a really good point. I didn’t think about it that way. They could still make them the weak point but just increase the strength of them a little. No stickers yet mate, but am looking to get some 👍🏻Thanks for watching 😀
I have one... All you need to do is peg each leg as you unfold it. No issues. I did break mine early on when a breeze got under it and when it snapped, it also scratched the roof. But now I peg each leg and have had no issues.
@@GetCampingOz thank you for the feedback! ♥️ Yeah, we can imagine! But now you are happy with them. Keep the great work up with your videos! You have excellent cutting skills! :)
Hi, nice review. I never thought to leave the poles at optimum height when packing up... 🙄! I've had mine for almost 3 years now, and 2 of the wall zips have corroded. Kudos to Rhino though, they're replacing the awning. There is a new model out now and I believe the hinges have been improved and the 'upgrade' is backwards compatible.
Broke 3 hinges last weekend...ordered new ones on my phone there and then. Delivered 2 days later! First time I've broken any in 4 years of ownership - I think they weaken over time. The other problem I've found is that the leg storage clips stop gripping the legs due to heat. They are only replaceable as part of a complete leg and roof rail assembly.
I have the 270 compact on my rav 4 ,excellent video ,I've not used mine yet . The question is how do the walls fit around on poles. Camping has changed since my last trip 40 odd years ago
My thought on the hinges is this: they would be better if made from a mix of rigid and flexible materials. A hard plastic (or metal) round shaped pivoting disc pressed into a hard rubber ring that has a shaft sticking out that fits into the poles. I am picturing something like a lollipop with a hole through it. Hope that makes sense... Until the hinges are improved I will be looking elsewhere. It's too breezy on the coast where I live.
Gday, great informative video and well presented. Maybe a collapse video ie after beach or Outback ( and not leaving it on the car when not in use eg NT).Great work.
This is the full size. No issues with installation. Can be installed with basic tools 🛠️. It comes with awning brackets so there isn’t any need to purchase anything else unless your roof rack won’t accept the brackets. Thanks for watching
The hinges are deliberately made from plastic so they break instead of bending the frame poles. I snapped 2 the first time I set it up and it was only the slightest gust of wind. Definitely a 2 person job in when the slightest wind.
Did the rear window of your canopy open all the way up and if so did it put much pressure on the awning? Curious about the passenger side canopy window too. Cheers.
Hey mate. Thanks for watching. I’m only using 2 x crossbars. The over hang is slightly more than Rhino Rack recommended but it’s been on for 6 months and no issues.

Hey great video do you think this would work on a van with a tailgate.i have a d5 Delica and I'm wondering if I would have any issues with the tailgate.. thankyou

Yep, I do the same. It's not rocket surgery to work out how to do it eh?

I like the light at the base of your canopy window, good idea!
Thanks Jack. It’s a HardKorr kit that can change between orange and white. Definitely makes camping easier
Great review.
I'm thinking about buying one for my van that I use for work and for camping (after I empty out the tools).

Awesome.
Again, a great video
Thanks mate. Yeh they are a great awning 👍🏻
just picked up one discounted at Jeep Beach 2023 - amazing glad I got it.
Awesome! They are a good awning!

That’s good to know. We have had no issues so far 👍🏻
Great review. I love the honesty of what you liked and disliked.
Thanks mate! Glad you enjoyed and got something out of the vid! Cheers Adam
Thank you for using our products! The awning looks fantastic! :)
The pegs are amazing! Wish we had found them sooner!
@@GetCampingOz thank you for the feedback! ♥️

Thanks for the review! This video’s of the reasons I got this awning yesterday. Can’t wait to try it in the UAE.
Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks for the info! I’ve purchased spare hinges just in case.
Well done - very informative and presented in an engaging manner. Good review.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻❤️
I have the 270 compact on my rav 4 ,excellent video ,I've not used mine yet .
The question is how do the walls fit around on poles.
Camping has changed since my last trip 40 odd years ago
I only have 1 wall, but from what I’ve seen they sit on the inside of the pole and Velcro tab on. Thanks for watching

Makes sense. Definitely a weak spot. Thanks for watching
thanx - great review. Great spot for camping too..
Glad you enjoyed it. Yes Gordon Country is one of our faves :)
Gday, great informative video and well presented. Maybe a collapse video ie after beach or Outback ( and not leaving it on the car when not in use eg NT).Great work.
Thanks Scott! Great suggestions!
How much are the extras to fully enclose ?
Great Video! Is this the compact or full-size? any issues with the installation? extra parts purchased?
This is the full size. No issues with installation. Can be installed with basic tools 🛠️. It comes with awning brackets so there isn’t any need to purchase anything else unless your roof rack won’t accept the brackets. Thanks for watching
Informative review. I like the Peggy pegs. Look real easy to use
Thanks mate. Peggy Peggs are awesome 😎
@@GetCampingOz word! 😎
$639 in Aus and we're paying $1400 here in NZ.....As with most things we're getting screwed.
That sucks! Would it be cheaper to buy in Oz and ship over ?
@GetCampingOz Possibly, especially with the exchange rate at the moment.....I've done that very thing several times with other smaller items.
The hinges are deliberately made from plastic so they break instead of bending the frame poles. I snapped 2 the first time I set it up and it was only the slightest gust of wind. Definitely a 2 person job in when the slightest wind.
Yeh, I do realise they are the weak link, just would have been nice if they made them a little stronger. Thanks for watching
Very good video, thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
Did the rear window of your canopy open all the way up and if so did it put much pressure on the awning? Curious about the passenger side canopy window too. Cheers.
Hey mate, the canopy window doesn’t quite lift all the way up and rests against it. It’s not much pressure. I’m not concerned. Cheers
Are you using a third mount on your racks with this awning? Just looking at the overhang on that awning.
Hey mate. Thanks for watching. I’m only using 2 x crossbars. The over hang is slightly more than Rhino Rack recommended but it’s been on for 6 months and no issues.
Hey mate. Thanks for watching. I’m only using 2 x crossbars. The over hang is slightly more than Rhino Rack recommended but it’s been on for 6 months and no issues.
Great review bud.
Thanks mate!
Could you install this awning without the rhino rack? I have a different roof rack
Yeh 100% you can. May require a slightly different mounting for your roof rack but the bracket will work
Hey great video do you think this would work on a van with a tailgate.i have a d5 Delica and I'm wondering if I would have any issues with the tailgate.. thankyou
It could work but would depend on how high you mounted the awning. If it was too low the tailgate door would hit the awning. Thanks for watching
Can the awning extension be added to any section of the awning?
Yeh sure can. Makes it super versatile 👍🏻
Hey mate!
How is it while driving. Any whistling or vibration? Great overview video. 👍🏼👊🏼
Can this fit with a rooftop tent
Yeh with the right brackets it could
How do you deal with a vehicle.with lift up tailgate. Will it hit the top.of.the rear part?
It does touch but it’s not an issue
I can see this being really hard to setup in 30 mph wind. no way those hinges hold up.
Yeh not really designed for high wind. It would be nice if they designed the hinges to be a little stronger
This awning is now $999 and can’t really complete to the other free standing awnings you can buy for a similar price point unfortunately
Yeh we got ours fairly cheap which made for a good deal. At $999, there is definitely other options out there. Thanks for watching
