having a holiday should also be fun/relaxing, forcing yourself to fill a travel sketchbook if it's gonna make yourself stressed and feel anxious isn't really what i'd call a good time :P if i draw on holidays it's because i actively want to, and it's always nice to look back on those drawings
A good tip I learned from another art TH-camr is to take a picture of your subject before you start drawing it. That way you can leave if you want and enjoy your travels in the moment, then you can sit down later at the end of the day and draw some of the stuff you saw. Hope this helps!
I approach travel sketchbooks very differently. I use it as downtime as things catch my eye rather than actively seeking to record. While it’s nice to have a sketchbook per trip, I’ll often fill it with other holidays too 😊
Didn’t mean this negatively; just that it seemed a lot of pressure putting on self than just enjoying some down time. However you do now have a beautiful sketchbook of memories out of it 😀
love the tip for bring washi tape if your planning to make a travel sketchbook, but LOL cutting out the blank pages of the sketchbook, amazing love that
This makes me so sad, I have such a different perspective on travel sketchbooks... I look FORWARD to drawing when I travel!! But also I ALWAYS keep one, even when I haven't left my home city in 2 years. I would bring whatever travel sketchbook I was already working on before I left for my vacation. I do also prioritize enjoying myself over drawing, and I take TONS of photographs I can draw from when I get back. I actually tried doing Inktober while visiting my sick mother-in-law in Oct 2020 (yep pandemic travel... Crazy times) but promptly gave up so I could enjoy being elsewhere and spend time with my MIL. (She's feeling much better now for the record! It's a miracle cause we thought she was gonna die, thus the traveling in the middle of a pandemic.) This is one of the reasons I don't let art become more than a hobby. If I started doing it for a living I'd start "grinding" and then I'd hate it. I'm sorry grind culture left such a deep impact on your ability to slow down and enjoy things! I struggle with that a bit too, and I have to remind myself of the wisdom that rest is equally important to work and actually makes you more productive.
I love the ending. I was like "I couldn't leave the pages empty but I know it would be really hard for me to come back to it" And then you solved it so easily, I love it
When I sketch while traveling it is usually to slow down and really take in the moment. I also enjoy collaging stuff in my sketchbook in the evening or sketching from a reference photo if there isn’t time in the moment. I don’t worry about the blank space at the back because I know I can always glue in other receipts, printed photos, or brochures that I find when unpacking 😊
just wanted to say that this is probably my favorite art channel, i just love his art style and the way he approaches things. it always makes me want to go do art myself. thanks for the amazing videos!
so much to think about, as always. appreciate your honesty and the fun bits 😄 I've wanted to fill a similar small sketchbook with memories from a trip but never got to it. and I was pretty devastated about it, too. but usually I travel with people who don't draw and it I don't feel the need to draw when I'm with them. maybe someday I'll go on a sketch tour with someone :) maybe by myself even!
A while back I bought a regular sketchbook to use for a “travel sketchbook” and figured I’d fill it in the three weeks I was away. I think I filled about 7 pages 😅 but now it’s for whenever I travel anywhere and I just make a new location page to indicate where the drawings following it where made. Definitely going to need to try the smaller sketchbook method- once I finish this first one…
Dare I say, your best? Awesome, story-line in there, recognizable. Whenever I am on a trip, I sanctimoniously want to see as much as possible and sit down and take it in. Sketching is the borderland, because it takes time away from running around and yet it gives you the best way to capture your subject in your brain forever. ps. I hunger for being in Asia again. Indonesia especially.
Hoo boy, that bit in the middle about not losing your love for art and creating solely as a freelancer who NEEDS to in order to take money hit XD I've been afraid of that ever since I saw it happen while I was in art school. I do like the notes on hoarding mode, I think everyone forgets a sketchbook doesn't need to just be drawing after drawing. If youve got ticket stubs, tape, funny stickers, printed photos, they're great to help record your travel while not putting so much pressure on yourself to fill EVERY page chock full of drawings. Banger of a video, seems like it was a fun trip!
Cool to see this mix of travel video and art! I sketched a little on my recent trips, but I took a lot of reference photos and finished the illustrations inspired by the trip at home.
I use to take all these supplies on my trips and ended up doing nothing with them. Except pen and paper so I have learned next trip, a journal and a few ink pens like micron and a couple of pencils. That’s it! Last year my first trip in 3 years I actually used a small 3 x 5 moleskine. I whipped it out when I had a down moment in the touristing we did or anytime! And yes! Journaling with emphemera, too! Thank you for your ideas! I have another trip coming up in May and September so I am learning from you! Thank you!
Commenting mostly for the algorithm because I don't have anything particularly novel to say, but your skills as a video producer have steadily improved the whole time I've been subscribed and I think that's really cool! It's something to be proud of.
The pressure to finish a travel sketchbook tends to mean I never start it. This was rather helpful in taking away some of that pressure. So thank you. Also - Patlabor
I love to bring a sketchbook traveling. But I don’t try to fill it. Usually I only have a few pages by the time the trip is over. It’s important to rest and have fun on vacation.
I literally just came home a few hours ago from a 4 day trip. Brought a sketch book with me for the first time and was able to roughly draw only 4 sceneries of the place. Wanted it to be a scenery oriented book. And can't agree more with you on having less time to go brain dead and chill out instead there was I alone doing a sketch while everyone else I was with was roaming around. But all I can say is those sketches were very fun to do. Will try the sticking stuff idea next time.
I'm glad I watched this video - I have an upcoming trip where I was planning to also draw and vlog my travels and this gave me a good insight of 'to dos' and 'not to dos'. Also LOVE THE ENDING I am definitely doing that if I don't finish it hahaha (it definitely takes off the pressure of 'having' to finish it for sure!!)
YO !!!!!!!!!!!!!CHROMA , I've been looking at some of your videos my friend, you got some good talent and some good ideas glad to see that your safe and doing fantastic keep it up , and when you coming back to TH-cam bro hopefully soon stay blessed and stay safe ANANDA
I have a travel sketchbook i bring everywhere i want to paint and i do gouache paintings in it and sometimes i dont get to paint on location so i take a picture and paint it later and for me its dope because its like a memory photo book and i get to remember all the places i went
Did you get comply foam tips for your WMF-1000MX3s? They literally saved the headphones for me. Anyway, there are few things I am fonder of than being the first one up on a lazy vacation morning, enjoying some kind of idealistic breakfast and an energy drink, then drawing as I overlook the ocean, as the bit of nighttime fog dissipates in the morning sun.
Wow I was thinking of starting a travel sketchbook but with the intention of journaling and draw some memories and ideas that usually cme to my mind when I travel, since traveling always brings me new ideas and my brain is saturated haha. I just discovered your channel with a video that helped me a lot. Thank you! ❤
Great video! I’m inspired to carry around a sketch book like that one to fill down time. Hopefully some day I’ll be able to afford a vacation and do the same.
I am too distracted by literally everything that exists around me that I have no real want to sketch it about 90% of the time. I would rather stare at each blade of grass that I technically saw hundreds of times before but not at that location than sit down for 15 - 30 mins, make people I travel with wait for me (as I haven't traveled alone for a holiday/leisure), and I make a mediocre study, and even better, utterly forget about it. I sometimes go through my drawings I do spot said studies and only the near finished ones immediately remind me my point of reference, day, context, weather and memories. Instead, I use my small pads to get creative ideas that flash in my mind down as quickly as possible for possible projects and THOSE actually manage to help me remember the context in which was made! I just have a small EDC (Every Day Carry) I take anywhere and that has been amazing! Good luck to anyone wanting to find what best works for them!
Talking about goblin-hoarding mode, I have a whole folder of receipts and cool bits from Japan in 2018, but the travel journal is full. I can’t let go of the rest til we can go again, and I can draw some more! 😅
Seeing you cutting out the empty pages at the end made me laugh so hard. I usually like writing a short diary entry about the daily activities on a travel trip, so I can better recall them years later. Next time maybe you can use the back of your sketchbook to do the same. :)
I laughed out loud when you cut out the pages at the end. I went to Australia recently and also did not finish my small sketchbook and they are pages left at the end. Seems pointless to fill it in now, might just cut them out XD On a side note, don't be so harsh on yourself, I learned that the hard way (and still am tbh) but resting is ok and important. If you can afford to chill and do nothing, enjoy the days where you just are.
To me there is no "have to" or "must" about any sketchbook. My goal with sketching in general and while traveling is to relax and enjoy the moment, capturing the scene that catches my eye. I take along a 6x9 inch manila envelope to keep ephemera until I have time/materials to put it in the book.
Oi, conhecei o canal a pouco tempo e estou amando os conteúdos principalmente os sobre sketchbooks, esta realmente me inspirando bastante espero que continue :)
Do you find that after climbing your arms are so sore drawing gets harder? When I go climbing my forearms feel so sore after that my drawing feels shaky 😅

Hey chroma, i got a serius question. I really need a sketchbook, because mine is almost finished, and the only sketchbook at my local store is a tiny papyrus (the brand's name i think) sketchbook and i already finished one sketchbook of this kind, and im about to finish the other one as i said before, and this sketchbook is tiny and dont have a hard texture, like i love, i mean, it got some textures, its not like a regular office a4 paper sheet but the texture still isnt that hard. the insight of not taking pictures just to fill up the memory card is brilliant.
wow even the trailer is beautifully edited
Hands down one of my favorite art focused channels! The analogy between a camera and a sketchbook also resonates heavily and is so valid.
