  • This short video goes over the process of obtaining a driver’s license abroad. It also compares and contrasts the differences of getting a license in the USA.
The process is called an exchange of a driving licence:
    1. A completed application
    2. 1 photograph (color 35mm x 45mm)
    3. Two- sided copy for your driver’s license
    4. Official translation of your driver’s license
    5. Proof of residence with Residence Card or another confirming document
Be sure to have a copy and the original of each document.
And as an extra measure bring your passport.

Im from polandf and for me the test wasnt so difficult, it took me only few days but I knew most of the signs earlier. In a drivers school you can ask about database of question (CD or online). I went through every question and it helped me a lot

We get an international driver's license from AAA when we go to Poland. There's a show on iTVN about traffic stops in Poland. I was surprised about the process.

I got one of those too ( international driver’s license from AAA), but it has expired. I will definitely check out iTVN, and see what driving schools provide for practice and study materials. Thank you and wish me luck. :)

I don't know if there an English version, but you can find mock tests online (for free, no need to create any accounts, etc.) I got my DL a few months ago and it wasn't too bad, but you do need 68points to pass (out of 74 total) so I definitely recommend studying for it. The practice tests are very quick, I did probably ~50 the day of my exam and some more before that.

Good to know. I’m going to give myself a month to prepare. Thanks for the info.

Study for the test because the rules are so specific. My husband said the US test was significantly different. Disclaimer: he got his Polish dl 20+ years ago so things have probably changed.

Thank you… I figured, as I had to look up several road signs when I first moved to Poland. Looks like it’s going to be an exam that needs a good amount of preparation.

@@peterholmanwashington between the road signs and changing speed limits he was completely stressed out after driving there for a month. The rules are intense. He was explaining it to me as were on the road and I could hardly keep up. The special signs overriding the general rules were a lot to pay attention to.

I've never needed my DL, so I dont have it. But I'm really suprised that there are places in Poland where you only need to wait for ca. 15 minutes to get to the office clerk. It doen't work so well in my city :c

Perhaps it was my lucky day. Thanks for sharing your experience.
