  • Its time for project vlog no.9, I've mostly painting other peoples Epic armies this summer, but I've still be slowly plugging away. In this update I continue 3d printing in Epic Scale, this time Peninsular British (with a test paint), I've been splitting strips (quick tutotial in the video), and planning my project further with the Hundred Days Campaign book.

    At Waterloo, a British and KGL brigades formed the light companies into a brigade light screen commanded by a major.
    To give extra skirmishers, the Duke added a company of rifles to the skirmish screen, making it almost battalion size.
    Some times 3 rifle companies were added depending where they were deployed and what the brigade orders were.

  • @davidwasilewski
    @davidwasilewski ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I’d either ‘go big’ and have one stand per company (relegating it to a large skirmish game) e.g. 10 small bases of 10 in two ranks per battalion (100 figure units), OR I’d go for 4 small bases (40 figure units) to reduce the unit footprint so you can play larger scale games but still represent the formations. I suppose what you’ve chosen does make sense for black powder rules though. You should do a showcase with close ups of everything you’ve painted for Napoleonics so far!

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the idea of trying a battalion with each company represented for a different game one day, not sure what rules would be best for that though. I’ll definitely do some showcases at some point, want to get some more of my own armies painted yet.

    I really love these Napoleonic Vlogs. It's really cool to compare to the similar passions of others.
    15:36 - a great job here. I have tried twice to split the strips to 5 men... I failed miserably but you did a great job. I'm definitely with you though - I love the 10man strip.
    20:06 - d'Erlon vs Picton is my similar focus. For me, my favourite part of the battle - it could have gone either way.
    Your army at the end looks amazing . It is such great work but will we ever be blessed with a video of it in action? 😃
    Top Vlog!

    Great video as ever, even pondering your approach myself now, the other rules we use may still force the fully split stands though. That said I'd sooner split just one stand in 3 rather than all of them. What are you planning to do with artillery and cavalry? Keep the same unit sizes?

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. I’ll likely be flexible with the cavalry, but I’d imagine I’ll be running 1, 2 & 3 stands more than 2, 3, & 4 stands on a 6x4. Not really decided with Artillery, but likely flexibility from game to game, especially with using commander minis with dice squares on bases to show size if needed.

    Army looks fantastic Stuart. Was at the Warlord Open Day. Austrians and Russians are certainly in the works. Not entirely sure if they will be resin or plastic. My money is on plastic. Peninsular British is certainly on the cards. Current French can do the whole war so certainly not going to be specific French Peninsular. I dented the wallet on the French imperial Guard bundle. They look marvelous just like the commanders.

      Ah fantastic thank you for this, I was gutted when a family break coincided with this weekend, I was planning on making it this year. I had a feeling that things had gone well enough that the decision to expand Epic Napoleonics would almost be made for them, I’m super excited about all of those. I now wonder about if they will ‘jump the queue’ and come out before they do the Epic Pike & Shotte and Ancients stuff they’re planning? I very much want to do those, but a break in the annual new period release wouldn’t be a problem for me while I catch up 😅😂

      I know this question is for @RatelMike, but I’ve not heard anything from those who have talked about it. I’d guess it’s a no for now, and they’d rather invest in adding new major nations, rather than ones they’ve said up until could be covered by painting conversions of British and French. That is just a guess at their intentions, could be way off.

    @TheHunch8ack ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Stuart. Regarding the resin, I use Phrozen water washable (as IPA washables are a lot of hassle and will kill my hands, although they're often far more resilient), which I've found to be more forgiving than Elegoo, for example. I found that I was over-curing in the early days. If you err on the side of under - so it's only *just* cured - then it'll cure a bit when sitting round waiting for painting (or cure lot in my case, given that I obviously never paint anything . . . ). I do about a minute for 10-15mm models, which a bit of hand-held UV light work to get into the underside and so on afterwards, so probably about 90-120 seconds in all. Obviously that depends on the power of your UV curing light. Hope this helps and thanks, as ever, for the vids. PS: If you do want to go IPA washable one of the most tabletop-resilient is (rather pricey) TGM-7, although there are lots of ABS-like resins around (and also a lot of homebrew mixtures of resins - just have a look online and TH-cam for the tsunami of opinions).

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, I’ll grab some of that resin to try. I’ve been using water washable myself, but the Elegoo stuff, so will be interesting to see how they compare. I’ve been over curing as well I think, so I’ll have to have a play around.

    Great content and a lot of informations and ideas! I like the way you base you infantry and skirmisher because of more flexibility. Would be great to know how you handle it with your cavalery. I´m not sure whats the best way. also 30x20 bases with 2 horses or all 5 on 60x20? Or bases with more depth like 30 than 20? I´ve started painting the french starter and there is a lot of infantry to go, but I like to think about storage and the complete project, therefore any hint about the bases for cavalery is welcome! 🙂

      I’ve been basing my Heavily Cavalry 5 to a base on a 60x30mm base - 5mm deeper as they tend to hang off the front and back of the 20mm deep ones provided - I’m using plastic ones from Renedra. I’m thinking about only have 4 to a base for light cavalry(on the same size base), but undecided as yet.

    You know, I have missed out on a number of these videos because of the amount of waffle you have at the beginning of them. I must say that I actually pushed through the waffle on this video and when you get to the meat of the subject it is quite informative. Even more so since I acquired a French and British starter set. I myself was wondering about the use of skirmishers, particularly for the British because there do not seem to be any in a deployed formation in the kit. However I like your presentation of a halved sprue as it fits the bill quite nicely.
    I wonder at the lack of skirmishers in the British army as they were a key tactic of Wellington's to frustrate their counter parts in the French army. Maybe Warlord wanted to give the French a fighting chance. 😉
    One other thing, La Hey Saint finally fell because the unfortunates within ran out of ammunition. They were a victim of the Quartermaster's prioritisation as the powder and ball were stuck in a wagon on the road from Brussels.

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they were clearly let down on resupply, I’ve read some fantastic accounts that describe the action in great detail, one of my favourite parts of the battle for sure.
      The lack of light troops for the British is an odd one, I’d have added them to the with frame with the British Infantry, had skirmishing troops also with the Highland troops, and had a separate frame for both line and skirmishing Rifles. I understand why Warlord did it though, tooling to set up a plastic frame is expensive. I’ve repainted some extra skirmishing rifles and added some 3d printed bits to provide enough skirmishing troops for the Brits. Think I’ve talked about it before but it may have been lost in vlogs where you didn’t make it past the waffle.
      A quick note (or waffle) on the waffle. I’m aware of it, but it won’t be going anywhere with my project vlogs, they’re designed to be open chat about my hobby progress, they don’t normally have mini tutorials in them. I never thought they’d be watched by many, just a place for me to record my progress, but oddly they seem to get a lot of views. My tutorials are much more heavily edited and less waffle filled, my reviews somewhere in between 🙂

    Looks amazing Stu! I have to get back into a regular painting regimen again to get my Napoleonics done.
    I had a question. I've been looking for a decent scenic backdrop like the one you have there. Was wondering where you got it. Also, do you have to mount them to cardboard, or do they already come stiffened?
    All the searches I did for backdrops turned up mostly model railroad ones. But many of those have something in them that gives them away as being modern, like a modern building or something...

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Mike.
      Backdrop wise I’ve only really found them from railway sellers, it reduces the usability a lot, but I managed to find a few without obvious out of era buildings etc. I bought two that you see the most on eBay, but it was so long ago that they don’t appear in my history to share I’m afraid. These are 5’ long, quite a lot are much shorter. All I can advise sadly is to browse and hope you find one suitable.
      To answer your other question, mine have all come rolled up in a tube, so I mounted them on foam board.

      I just got ACW starter to see if I like the black power rules. I went with 15mm because I have another game that is 15mm. Also mainly 15mm is because I only have a 6x4’ table. So is there a frontage issue with both epic series.

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The choice to make the stands 60mm is a great one aesthetically, but it does result in wide units on the table, so much so that it negates some of the advantages of the smaller scale. So many players use less stands/split strips etc to gain back the advantage.

    • @norm977
      @norm977 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@wolf58th21 There isn’t a design issue, Warlord want this game to look / be EPIC, so that means big head count per unit. Black powder has always been a big table game …. However, those of us with smaller tables i.e. standard domestic have always looked for ways of shrinking unit footprint and dropping measurements (i.e halving for example or converting inches to centimetres) and that applies as much to Epic as to 28mm, hence I am dropping my Epic from 4 or 5 bases to 2. It might not look as ‘Epic’ as Warlord intended, but it works for me 🙂

  • @Rusty_Gold85

    Where I am lost is you have made the 6 stands out of 8 and they contain the Flag bearer base what do you do with the last 2 that havn't got a Standard bearer ?

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t plan to use them in most games. The reason I split the stands was to reduce frontage, I was happy with the look of 3 regular stands, but that meant I couldn’t form square the way I wanted, so I have to split one of those three stands at least. I considered spotting the command stand, that would mean only one needed to be split, but if I ever wanted to reduce the unit size further, then I’d have to loose a flank company. So I opted for splitting both flank company stands. This leaves me with two half stands that in most cases I won’t use, but I’ll paint up a few to add in to units to represent large units. Sorry I’m not sure that’s any clearer 😂
