Favourite female artist? Easy - Kate Bush, and she has been since her first astonishing appearance on Top of the Pops in January 1978, The most emotional, intense and interesting singer and songwriter I know, I 've had the privilege of see her live five times.
    Other female artists:
Sandy Denny - the most beautiful voice ever
    Bjork
    Joni Mitchell
    Joanna Newsome

This is an interresting album. All the big hits on the first side. Running up that Hill, Hounds of Love and Cloudbusting which has a great video with Donald Sutherland and what not. And then you turn to the b-side with no special expectations. But what a surpise! I still think that the b-side is the best music Kate Bush has ever written. You have to listen it as a one piece to fully appreciate it. It's worth it. Artistic, innovative, fearless.

Kate Bush, with Stevie Nicks a distant second. I’ve got everything by Kate, including the recent singles/ b sides releases, and if she were to announce live dates again I’d be queueing for them immediately. Alas it looks like she won’t even be releasing Before the Dawn on video 😭 really a pity as it was one of the most visual live shows I’ve seen.
This album is all great, but watching the Ninth Wave songs played live...priceless.

Kate Bush was like 15 years old when her first album came out and she was the musical guest on saturday night live just haunting the audience with a jaw dropping performance that captivated us all in the late 70s. Stunningly amazing

Yes she did but what a shame if that's the reason - her voice was fantastic and the theatricality of the whole production was impressive . The Ninth Wave was particularly good with some great visual stuff, on par with a top West End Musical.

The sound of the cellos, gradually building in the background gives even more tension to the sensation of being pursued, adding to her emotional
and not rational thoughts on the "fate" of being captured by love. The mood it sets is absolutely one of a breathless, fearful chase.
You said she intended this album to be visual, it certainly is that! Beautifully so.

The Ninth Wave is a suite about a woman who is about to get frozen in the sea. In her final moments she struggles and recalls vivid memories of her past, trying to keep herself alive. Amazing and (very) adventurous composition, give it a listen, you and eveybody!

My favourite KB album. The album in my opinion should be listened to from start to finish. The album is split into 2 parts, "The Hounds of Love" and "The Ninth Wave". "Hello Earth" from the conceptual Ninth Wave part of the album still gives me chills and brings a tear to my eye ... how so much beauty and emotion can be captured on audio tape still amazes me . Absolutely love the album and every track on it, ( I second every comment about side two), Kate at her best. ( And it's a high bar). Any list of artists becomes such a difficult thing to do and to pick favourites can depend on when you're asked but some constants would be Alison Moyet, Annie Lennox, PJ Harvey, Timi Yuro, ( just such a great voice) and I loved that another comment gave a shout out to Toni Childs; I could go on but that's enough.

3 of favorite female artists come very easy:
Kate Bush for being Kate Bush
Laurie Anderson for being much more than only a musician ( f.e. watching "Home of the Brave" was more than once a great joy)
Regina Spektor for the diversity in her music, wonderful lyrics and her ability of making videos. More than 99 % of the videos I have seen are a boring series of cuts. But she made some of the sort I can watch more often.

Justin, I have two femaley suggestions:
    1. Fleetwood Mac: Sara
Like floating in space, or to paraphrase the lyrics, drowning in a sea of love. Sonically gorgeous, impossibly dreamy.
    2. Stina Nordenstam: I See You Again
A unique - and I don't use the word lightly - Swedish artist. Sounds like someone whispering gorgeous melodies into your ear. (This was WAY before the AMSR craze.)
OK, namedropping time. In my journo days, I did an interview with Stina. We talked about melancholy and depression. Comfortably, because we're both Nordic people. Finally, as it was a World Cup (football, or soccer to you heathens) year, I asked her about Sweden's chances in the competition. I meant it as a kind of a mood-lightening joke, but she got really into it: "Well, that really depends on the player selection. Now, let's see...". I really liked her.
PS. An extra bait: she's collaborated with David Sylvian.

I just became a member of your channel, really interesting to see a music lovers reaction to songs, and you really have a way to properly describe your feelings about the music. My favourite female artist... That is really tough. I guess it would be Kate Bush in the end as well. My request however veers away from 80s rock, and I would love to see your reaction to Sunset Coming On, on Mali Music, kind of a Damon Albarn project (Blur)... Gives me goose bumps any time. As for the dreaming (Kate Bush), might be one of the first time I got drawn to World Music influences in western music.

My favorite female artist will always be Joni Mitchell but Kate is a close second. I've been following her since she appeared on SNL. I was stationed in England from 1979 to 1982 so I got to collect her singles with the non-album tracks. I think this is her best album, 4 of the 5 songs on side 1 were released as singles, the 3rd song is my favorite. Side 2 is phenomenal, a concept suite she featured in her rare tour a couple of years ago.
Good point about the strings, I love the cello and her voice is the selling point obviously.

Favorite female artists (aside from Kate Bush) - Happy Rhodes (one of the most incredible voices I've ever heard with an insane range, and she writes fascinating songs - Many Worlds Are Born Tonight is a great place to start), Agnes Obel (haunting melancholy magic. Start anywhere. Every song is a treasure), Harriet Wheeler (lead singer of The Sundays. One of the best and most overlooked bands of the 90's. The album "Blind" is a pop masterpiece), Jenn Wasner of indie band Wye Oak (fantastic songwriter. Their latest single "Fortune" is a good intro, or "If You Should See" off Tween. She's a great guitarist too). Liz Frasier of Cocteau Twins (also famous for the song "Tear Drop" by Massive Attack), Lisa Gerard of Dead Can Dance, Joni Mitchell. Not sure I could pick just one.
Also, like everyone else has already said, The Ninth Wave off this album is incredible.

I think Hounds of Love is probably Kate Bush's most consistent and cohesive album, but I never felt quite as excited or emotionally engaged by it as by much of her earlier material. It marked the point where the seemingly endless wait for the next Kate Bush album no longer seemed important, although I largely fell out of love with contemporary music towards the end of the 1980's. Other female artists worth checking out: Sandy Denny, Janis Joplin, Siouxsie Sioux, Tori Amos, P J Harvey, and as a female fronted band, ABBA.

After Kate's sonic adventures on her 3rd & 4th albums, in 1980 & 82 (same years as Peter Gabriel's 3rd & 4th genius experimentations), "Hounds of Love" was a definite step down in energy but not in imagination. On Side Two, being chased as she skates on a frozen river, chased by the witch underneath the ice --- what a thrilling, frightening image!
Still, I preferred "The Sensual World", the mature album that came next, and also preferred the album after that, "The Red Shoes." Amazing, powerful, surprising and vital music.

One female singer and songwriter that I think is not known very well but is quite memorable and reminds me just a bit of a female Nick Drake (although she certainly has her own unique qualities) is Heidi Berry and her record 'Love' is particularily peaceful and folkish and memorable.
