I hope he does it as one reaction. I don't have a problem with splitting the A-side into single song reactions but The Ninth wave really should be listened to as one piece.

@@jori1 Was coming in to say the exact same thing. When someone hasn't heard a song (seen a movie, read a book, etc.) I love, my reaction is ... jealously. As much as I love them, I'd love even more to have the chance to hear "Ninth Wave" or "Left of the Dial" or "Marquee Moon" or "Remember the Mountain Bed" for the first time, again.
I'd also love to have no idea what was about to happen before Snoop buys a nail gun on the "The Wire."

When you get to The Ninth Wave (2nd side of the album starting from And Dream of Sheep) you have to do it all in one video as it is seen as one piece of music, the tracks flow into each other and they all tell one story.

To me this song is just pure joy. That's what she's bringing to the table and and that's what I get out of it. It seems so full of joy and it just makes me happy when I listen to it. To me, perhaps it's not the best song on the album (that would be Hello Earth) but it's the most fun. For me the second half is similar to Hey Jude in the sense that it has a repeated phrase in the backing vocal with a really inspired improvised lead on top. That's just my take of course.

This is actually my favorite track of hers period. When PJ says tribal, Kate is very influenced by World Music (ethnic music from around the world). This is very influenced by Easterm European folk.
By no means feel she is intentionally using the track as a platform to showcase her vocal range. I think she just adapts to the song at hand and what it calls for. Lastly Kate is a peformace artist which is 50% of her appeal. While I
respect PJ reacting to audio over video.
In this particular case worth seeing and would give a completey different perspective. Her performance (and others) is astounding! The video is a masterpiece and my favorite of hers.
It was this video that made me a KB enthusiastic..

Hey JP, nice choice! Kate’s is a rabbithole that is very wild, with totally unexpected detours, genres, and remarkable intensity. I could not stop playing this album when i came out. It is indeed one of my proverbial desert island choices. EVERY track is great. Kate said that she was real drunk when she recorded her ad libs at the end of this tune.. Keep up the good work! Try Kate’s “Get Out of My House” from “The Dreaming” sometime soon please. th-cam.com/video/kdsNX1WyN20/w-d-xo.html

      Definitely the female Peter Gabriel.
Even their styles progressed in the same directions and in the same years.
"Thank you Peter Gabriel for opening windows" she credited him on her 3rd album in 1980, the first that she self-produced. Note that Gabriel's 3rd album came in 1980, and both records are where each artist finally defined him and herself, coming into their own at last.

There's an amusing 12" mix where a crowd comments on the clouds. "That cloud is nothing but trouble!" … "That cloud looks like it's going to rain!" (murmurs of approvals). It provides a nice break in the repeating sections.

This album is a masterpiece in my opinion and The Big Sky is a transition in changing tonalities of the album's path. It should be listened to from start to finish - in order. That to me is the way Kate's musical thoughts and expression works. She composes in a way beyond just writing songs. Your observations about the lyrics are spot on and I think the music which is a chanting in March form evokes a brightness the big sky brings in a single experience of a person's seeing upwardly as if the clouds are the inspiration for how the music does not "repeat", but cycles like clouds turning and more and more strongly saying, Look! This is amazing! It doesn't need to be musically complex and instead chants in a very Celtic celebration. That's my take anyway. Cheers, Justin. 👍🎶

She was amazing I grew up with this as a British child in the 80's. She began her songs amazingly and ended them amazingly a lot of her songs were inspired by books. Great British books. Her mom was a nurse and her Irish mother was a Nurse. I identified with her except I never went to private school and I was of Caribbean decent. You won't like it if you don't get British culture. Also her brother used a lot of unusual instruments

I love this song, so much energy. I'm not someone into percussion but it shines here, she keeps piling on the layers, the hand claps. There's a very busy music video that's worth a look. The line "You never understood me," brings to mind 'Both Sides Now' by Joni Mitchell where one verse concludes with the line "I really don't know clouds at all."
A non-album b-side from this single is 'Not This Time' is also worth seeking out.

After The Dreaming flopped everybody was calling her 'Crazy Kate'...then this album dropped...nobody was calling her crazy anymore...a phenomenal work by imo the most important female artist of the late 20th century. I agree - it's not one of Kate's biggest songs on Hounds - I think this was influenced, just for fun, by Cindi Lauper's "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", and the video kind of further emphasizes this. I am more intrigued by her portrayal of Peter Reich's Book of Dreams in "Cloudbusting" (there is a great video of this starring Donald Sutherland), and the masterful sound mixes in "Watching You Without Me" - two of my favorite tracks!

I just can't get enough of Kate Bush. Thank you for reacting to her music. Something you may not know is that Kate is fluent in Gaelic. She performed a traditional Gaelic folksong with a translated title of "Women of Ireland," and the beauty of her voice just gives me chills every time I've heard it. There's also a couple of videos of guitar virtuoso Jeff Back performing the song, one with his band, and another with Sharron Corr, both of which are wonderful. But Kate's rendition is just spectacular, conveying deep emotions even though I don't understand a word. th-cam.com/video/shV-tT8cY-A/w-d-xo.html

This track absolutely bounces. It’s one of the stronger ones from that very famous Album. It sounds as fresh today as it did back in the day. It could be released tomorrow and sound new. A lot of artists today would like a track that’s sounds like that (and try hard to emulate the sound). Real good musician. She programmed the fairlight CMI synth herself, far more than a vocalist.

Great song by Kate, and this isn't a criticism but this is her at her polished best. I am a huge fan of this album but also a sucker for her first two albums which were more stripped back. Oh England My Lionheart is typical of her early piano driven style and is such a touching song. I can sort of understand why you didn't like the song straight away (even although your wrong lol), side one is effectively a collection of pop songs, but the second side is a complete work, very ambitious, and masterly crafted.

Love Kate Bush. I would consider her a child prodigy, a musical genius and a consummate artist. She is a once in a lifetime talent, so I thought. You need to listen to and react to Norwegian artist Aurora. Like Bush, she wrote many of her songs as a young teenager and recorded them as an older teenager. I would recommend "Runaway", "Warrior", " Queendom Come", "Eyes of a Child".

Nice response: you certainly know how to give Kate her due. What I always am struck by is how particular Kate is about every detail of her music, and how she has the confidence, and ability, assemble these details into exactly the overall sound she hears in her head. In this song, just try to count how many different independent vocal tracks Kate created: her lead, the multi-part harmonies that go "dum day oh, dum day oh", the multi-part harmonies that go "dum did day um dum, di day dee ay di day dee ay di", the multi-part harmonies that go "roll me over like a great big cloud walkin' out in the big sky", all the different moans, screams and god-only-knows-what other sounds she makes throughout the song. She clearly needed to record dozens of different parts to achieve what she wanted.
BTW - the track you listened to was not the album version but the single. There's not a huge difference between the two but the album version is, if you can believe it, a bit more expansive.

It's one of the few songs on the album that has any energy at all, and what energy! And that SCREAM at the end! This is Rock n Roll.
It has some of the weirdness of "The Dreaming", which remains my favourite of her albums. Propulsive, imaginative and danceable. You should see the video, mate -- such fun.

Great song. But you owe it to yourself to listen to the (Meteorological Mix) version as well. It's the B-side of the single.
I can understand if you don't like the song that much. It's more of an acquired taste than the rest of the singles off the album.
And I think that has to do with the structure of the composition. It's extremely simple and bare-bones.
It's essentially just there as something for Kate to hang the ENTIRE SKY on, in the shape of extreme overproduction.
But what I like about the song is that it's meant to be overproduced. That's what she was going for. Sound clouds, man.

Justin, all of the songs on this album sound best in context. That's especially true for the second half (The Ninth Wave), which is one continuous piece. But it's also true for the first half. The Big Sky is the third of five songs, and marks a kind of transition point toward the last two tracks on that "side" of the album.

Justin, it is just wonderful you work through complete classic albums. This not the best song of Hounds Of Love, but in time I learned to just love it for the fun it radiates. This version (special mix) can be found on the Hounds Of Love 'remastered version', which is a shame. Why the original version got wasted is beyond me. Why change part of a classic album at all? What if Wuthering Heights on The Kick Inside was swapped with the 'new version' from 1986? I think that is just an awful thing to do.
And again you give an honest and very detailed reaction. Thanks!

I like your point that while technicality and virtuosity can be showy for the sake of being showy, it's so often just fun. And how could it not be? If someone is good at what they do, aren't they going to have fun doing it as best as they can?--whether that be the playing or the composing. It's sometimes seen as taking oneself too seriously, but it may also be the most childlike thing a highly talented person can do. What, after all, is childlike about restraining oneself from experimenting with and exercising their skills?

Wow this os actually my favorite track!
PJ When you say tribal, Kate is very influenced by World Music (ethnic music from around the world). This is very influenced by Easterm European folk.
I by no means feel she is intentionally using the track as a platform to showcase her vocal range. I think she just adapts to the song at hand and what it call,

I like the way you analyze songs this song was pretty real good sounded like Cyndi Lauper a little bit but even though it’s an older song there’s a lot of music from back in the day that I didn’t listen to but I’m glad that you bring it up and pass it around the little stuff This song is very festive like it a lot

Not a bad track on this album. The vocal has a childlike quality and I've always loved Kate Bush's confidence in experimenting with voice and "words", creating her own unique trance vocal riffing. Instead of sha waddy doo-wop she gives us eeoh-eeoh yay etc. Plenty of that here. Great! You haven't done Cloudbusting yet, from the same album. You got a treat coming.

My art teacher said to me ( years ago), not everything you do has to be a masterpiece. I was like, huh?
I think this was a whimsical fun song that had a decent production budget. Sounds a bit overdone to me but that was the 80s. I have this CD but haven’t listened to it for decades. I did enjoy hearing it again. Not a masterpiece but fun.
    Peace and Music

I don't think it's ever a matter of being right or wrong. The only thing that counts is that you always really listen to the song, and pay rapt attention to it, and then put a lot of effort into your critique of it afterwards. As long as there's that level of respect for the music, everything else is about the vagaries of personal taste. We also know that some songs are slow-growers and don't always work after a single listen. I'm intrigued to find out what you got from The Ninth Wave, although it's a tricky thing to react to piecemeal.

Enjoying watching you move toward the "Ninth Wave" (album tracks 6-12). Even if you don't end up recording a reaction to 25 minutes of music (!), please find a way to let us know what you thought of it.
"Mother Stands for Comfort," which follows "Big Sky" on the album is a real change of pace from the first three tracks; slows things down, but still packs a punch (and a Fairlight synthesizer). Hope you manage to get to that one soon, without driving off the citizenry by becoming all-Kate-all-the-time, of course.
    Keep on....

You probably won't fully understand why Kate Bush is so special before you listen to the B-side with the song cycle "The Ninth Wave". In my opinion that's her masterpiece. It's 25 minutes of trippy music that couldn't have been made by anybody else than Kate Bush. Would love to hear your opinion on it.

Kate is a peformace artist which is 50% of her appeal. While Irespect and agree with reacting to audio over video.
In this particular case I highly suggest viewing the " Big Sky" video. It would give a completey different perspective. Her performance (and others) is astounding! The video is otherworldly and a masterpiece ( my favorite of hers)
It was this video that made me a KB enthusiastic..
