    Man we already look ridiculous enough as guitarists making our guitar-y faces during solos. This tube takes it to the next level.

    Exactly. From the head to the input on the talk box, from the out to your speaker cab. Make sure you use speaker cables not guitar cables.

    Nice video!! Listen, I am doing a Heil Sound quick history segment for a microphone review video on my TH-cam Channel. I want to quickly point the fact that Heil Sound invented the Talk Box. Can I use a few seconds of your video in mine to show them what the Talk Box is about ?

    You can bypass the preamp and make your guitar amp just a speaker. Thats what i did cause i dont have the money to do it the other way yet. Its works. Just add another amp for the mic.

    Is half inch the OUTSIDE diameter or inside, of the tube? I tried a 1/2" outside diameter and it's too loose in the unit...seems a slightly larger outside diameter is what the original is...?..

    • @hoboroadie
      @hoboroadie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think its about 5/8 inch, wrap the end with a bit of tape.

  • @DesertPaladin
    @DesertPaladin 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excellent. That's exactly the set-up I determined to use with my own amp. It's a Crate V-3112, which at 30watts is almost too much amp for talkboxing.
    Q: I understand there are reducer kits out now which allow you to use a smaller tube which make mouthing the tube a lot easier: Ever use one? What do you think? Do you feel like I do? ;-)

    Hello Ed! I have a Heil Talk Box that I've had for years. When I first got I set it up could not get it to work. I never bothered to return it where I got it because I thought maybe I was doing something wrong. So after years of having it sit around I'm trying to use it again. I've followed the instruction on how to set it up but I'm still not getting it to work. Is it because I'm a Bassist and the frequency is too low for the bass? I thought that maybe I got a defective box from the seller. So I don't know if I'm still doing something wrong or do I have a defective Heil? Any suggestions??? Thanks!

  • @danielsmith9787
    @danielsmith9787 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I bet your all wondering why his talk box sounds like a weak wah-wah,...You should be using it with a microphone!!!! Don't follow this method people. The correct set-up should be through your speaker output, so the signal can flow normally when engaged as well as bypassed. As far as the mic setup, it hooks into to the pa just like always, with a standard XLR cable.

    • @MoreThanGuitar
      @MoreThanGuitar  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey thanks for commenting, but "weak wah-wah"? Kinda harsh, bro. I'm no Frampton but I'm not THAT bad. Of course you use a talk box with a microphone. Like I said in the video, it was raining and all the mics were out in the trailer. I decided that showing how to position the tube on the mic wasn't worth getting wet. The way the video shows to set up the talk box is correct you've probably never seen anybody use one with a combo. Half stack is more common and easier hook up.

    • @danielsmith9787
      @danielsmith9787 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      My bad bro, I guess it was a bit harsh. I just don't understand why you would do a demo video and not do it right? With the amount of time it took you to shoot the video, you could have grabbed your mic for a proper demo,

      Small beer. I run my mic through a UA Solo 610 then re-amp into two more amps. P.A. dude doesn't have to worry. I can give him a mix.

    • @jscan
      @jscan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      you're not incorrect that we're not hearing the full effect - I hear as much acoustic of the guitar as I do the tube.. of course a mike would overcome that, and I agree with others here that you only get the full articulation if you really get the tube in your mouth, not just at the corner.. but to each his own, and still a fairly good demo of what the Heil is all about!

    So are you using two amps? you should have a speaker cable running from the output of the amp header your guitar is plugged into going to the left side of the talk box, then where does the right side speaker cable go to? God this is confusing...

    • @MoreThanGuitar
      @MoreThanGuitar  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Fender Blues JR is a combo with the speaker wire that plugs into the back of the amp; easily accessible, I patched the talk box in between the amp and speaker of the same amp.

    • @RoxxHoffner
      @RoxxHoffner 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good, I'm not the only one that's as confused now as before I watched the video 4 or 6 times.. I need to see EXACTLY how, where and which holes each cable(and adaptors) gets plugged into? I've caused enough amplifier disasters to take too many more chances by plugging/unplugging or pulling things apart.

      Bedroom volume hijinks galore. Honestly you have to spend some time with it to develop facility. I turned off the mic pretty quick and practiced working it. 😜
      Now my mic goes through a nice preamp then is re-amped wet-dry to two other amps, and that compensates for the volume drop.

    • @hoboroadie
      @hoboroadie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a safety lamp in series with the high frequency driver to help keep from burning out the coil wire. 100 watts is pretty warm. Some of the newer ones omit that part, I like the look.

      Not sure. He's tuned down a little, could EQ it low. To get the sound Joe Walsh used in Rocky Mountain Way I combined the talk box with an octave pedal; the settings of which got pooched the night of the show so it didn't work, DOH!

      mini hoov Yup. Just watch any of the notables such as Peter Frampton, Mick Mars, or Richie Sambora when they use talk boxes live. Tube is always in their mouth when the effect is being utilized. I call Heil's tooth rattlers because to really achieve that signature growling sound of a Heil you have to turn the volume up on them pretty high which in turn pumps quite a bit of air into your mouth cavity. I own a Heil, btw.

    It will work fine; for a while. You will find you have to replace your speakers every 4 months or so If you play a lot. I didn't believe it until I met a guy who did just that. There's not enough wire in a guitar cord to carry the power for speakers.
