So, people didn't like the episode where Henry Blake was killed. I remember that episode and how powerful it was. If the intent was to show the senseless wastefulness of war, it couldn't have succeeded better. Top notch
Exactly. Trapper leaving Mash was handled way worse in my opinion. There was just nothing in that episode. People say leaving without saying bye to hawkeye was not in his character but I definitely see Trapper not caring too much about it and just leaving after all they were just roommates they didn't choose to be in Korea together Trapper has family and friends back home and I don't think he has ever showed as much emotions about the relationship with Hawkeye as Hawkeye did. Trapper seemed way more easy going and les of a moralist than Hawkeye he could even get along with Frank so I don't really think he cared about anybody from the camp really.
I'm going through all the series at the moment and just watched that episode today and cried at the end when Radar went into the operation room and said what he said.
I am in the UK and I never missed an episode of MASH, I now have it on DVD and have watch it so many times I have lost count. I still laugh and cry at certain parts. I am 74 and it is still my all time favourite TV show
Since they didn't use the laugh track in the UK do your dvds have them? Here you can turn off the canned laughter and its like experiencing the show in a whole new way, so I imagine if you never heard them there and then turned them on it would be seem like a cheesy addition
The dog tags that Jamie Farr wore while playing his role were his actual dog tags from his time in the Army. Also, while everyone despised Frank Burns, the character, Larry Linville, the actor who played him, was well-liked by the rest of the cast.
Honestly I’m really glad they got rid of Frank and Col. Blake. The replacements Col. Potter and Charles are much better characters. Frank was an idiot and a bad surgeon and would constantly sexually harass Margaret and also Colonel Blake was incompetent at his job. Colonel Potter and Charles Winchester are much better characters. I understand why people are the way hey are at 4077 mash and I also understands that these people might be a little bit crazy but they’re also very good at their jobs when it comes time to get serious about work. Charles Winchester, while still being full of himself, got rid of all the negative characteristics that Frank Burns brought to the show. He is still snobby, and he still hates Hawkeye and BJ but he is also a much better than Frank Burns. Colonel Potter was also a much better leader and didn’t let Hawkeye and BJ or Hawkeye and Honeycutt push him around like they did with Colonel Blake.
The one episode I can't watch is the Dreams one--where at one point Winchester tap dances and Hawkeye's arm n blood come out of his socket. y that disturbing image?

I binge the entire series 2 times a year while at work and currently on my 2nd of the year, somehow i notice small things in every season ive never noticed before.
M*A*S*H is one of my favorite shows of all times. I was a child when it started and a young adult when it ended. I loved the cast but the original cast was my favorite. The character "Hawkeye" helped me form beliefs I still have to this day. A show about war, M*A*S*H proved that mankind's strongest defense and weapon is words. It's quips, bon mots and tirades, although not lethal like gunfire, bombs and mines, won a lot of battles for the 4077th. I am so glad I experienced M*A*S*H in my youth.
@@laustcawz2089 Yes, it is EVEN MORE anti war, far more iconoclastic, incredibly more disdainful of religion, and a bunch of other things that, in needing to be debated as to nature before any discussion concerning the effect the inclusion of the event had on the entire work, demonstrate that Robert Altman created something timeless. I might have to watch it again tonight but strictly relying on my memory, it was Trapper that started the process that got THAT Frank Burns committed. One of my favorite things about the movie --though it bores me to watch that part-- is how it satirized what was, at the time, a growing mania with football and paralleled it with how people who are not likely to bleed in a war come to perceive the war when it is presented --and it is, "presented" (spectacle in the philosophical sense) --I am surprised that there is no TV sponsorship at this point-- to them in that mishmash of selected daily events that is still termed "news." One thing that always frustrated me about the show was that opportunities to satirize some things (I cannot point to a specific right now) were passed over or defanged. I will freely admit that with satire at the level presented by the movie, MASH wouldn't have lasted as long as it did. Someone, somewhere, will always become uncomfortable when the world changes in some way or another (the rate is less relevant than the nature of the change -in my opinion, at least--) and, I feel that, as people get older, the rate of change appears to accelerate. I feel this is where some of Alan Alda's comments in some past interviews concerning the nature of Hawkeye's liberalism in relation to his own perception of self originate. That is to say, the movie is just as loud a statement as it ever was and the show has made more hawks into owls -rather than doves- than some might have either expected or find comfortable; nevertheless, I would say that the changes TheKrazySexyKool experience in their personal believes would have taken place with the movie (after watching it a few times, the satire is forceful and iconoclastic) just more abruptly. MASH gave parents the excuse of time for the changes in their children's personalities and beliefs as teens and young adults. Given what happened with Judas Priest and Twisted Sister, I am often surprised that "Suicide is painless... it brings on many changes..." hasn't been vilified... Of course, Painless had a very large reason to live and it might well have been the first time anyone mentioned erectile dysfunction outside of an examination room. It might also have been the first time anyone questioned how being a man is defined by our society... a brave man once requested me to answer questions that are key...
I loved to hear the Teddy bear was returned. I was shoked about the time capsule. The death of Henry Blake still hurts when I watch it. While the chopper takes off and Radar is at attebtion saluting and crying.. Wow what a scene.
I was a teenager when MASH first started, & was in the U.S. Army when it finished. In fact I even camped out on a hill over looking their set in the Santa Monica hills. I was able to get two items from the set, one was from the huge Goodbye sign in rocks, I have three of those rocks. The 2nd item was a 4x4 fence post that had MASH 4077th painted on it. That post now sits in a 5 gallon bucket in cement. My memories from a show that I'll always love until the day the good lord calls me home!
My favorite was when Col. Blake went home. I hated the ending. However, in real life and war, these things did happen. It was a stroke of genius. The emotions of the cast were real. Especially Radar's. His look said it all.
The fact that some one gave the teddy bear back was awesome and I had found the time capsule I would have kept it and displayed it. It's a big part of 70's history.
My mother died 2 days before mother's day this year and Mash was her favorite show. She used to complain that when I was born it was during a Mash special and she had to wait almost a year to see it in reruns lol. Hulu binging mash has become a thing for me lately so I was really hyped to see this vid.
@@sking2173 If it makes you feel any better, years later McLean Stevenson in an interview said that Henry didn't really die; that Henry had gotten on the wrong plane and went to Singapore and spent the rest of the war trying to get home and convince everyone he was alive. The Army just assumed Henry was on the plane that spun in.

I will always go back and watch MASH. I might not watch an episode for like 3-4-5 years, and then I’ll binge watch a bunch because they never get old. It’s like having a reunion with old friends. Best TV show of all time!

One of my favorite episodes was when Radar wrote to Charles' mother asking for something from home. When Charles opened up the Christmas gift of his old ski hat, the melancholy joy and gratitude he expressed was palpable.
I watched as a kid, I have watched every episode many many times, I have the whole series on DVD and I still watch it every time it’s on TV. A true test of time. BEST TV SERIES OF ALL TIME IN MY OPINION. THANKS M*A*S*H.
Absolutely, others r laughable, 'Friends', to me, while a comedy, stinks! And the law and order sex cases on at noon or 2 in the afternoon may as well b rates R 4 some subjects, excuse my language ---sick F**** ridiculous television.
I met Dr. Hornberger in 1993 in South Korea. We was the featured speaker at the annual US Army South Korea Medical Conference. He was retired at the Makaha Towers Golf Resort on Oahu, Hawaii. Interesting fellow, but humble. He never expected the success of his story but enjoyed the sunshine and golf.
I don't even care if any of these are true or not, it's got clips that trigger flashbacks of the show, which I loved long before I understood most of the jokes. It was poignant, funny, sad, brutally honest, filmed in such a great way. You laughed, cried, and thought about it for long afterward. It had moral crises, love, highlited political issues, race issues, the difficulty of being separated from loved ones, and inspired many other shows. Thanks & love to everybody, stay safe & know we'll survive this current nightmare!
I just received the box set of MASH from my parents for Christmas. I'm up to season 9. I've seen every episode at least twice before anyway, mostly when I was a kid, but I became an actor 3 years ago, at the age of 50, so it's even more interesting watching them now. MASH is my favorite tv show of all-time!
Wayne Rogers played a doctor on "House Calls". I was so confused. His character on "House Calls" wasn't Trapper John, but Pernell Roberts was Trapper John on "Trapper John, M.D.".
What could be mentioned as a piece of trivia is that in season 1, Henry's wife was named Mildred but was changed to Lorraine later. Col. Potter's wife was named Mildred. Incidentally, Harry Morgan is the only actor to play one character in an earlier episode (crazy Gen. Steele) then be added as a full time member of the cast when he became Col. Sherman T. Potter.
If you listen closely to the lyrics of General Steele's song (When the sun goes down ....) it's a little bit racist. When everyone else starts singing it they sing slightly different lyrics.

I believe Klinger is in the show from the beginning, he's reading announcements on the PA in S1E1. Alan Alda, Loretta Swit, Jamie Farr and Kelly Nakahara are the only 4 that are in the series from beginning to end, correct?
I remember my mother and I crying when Radar told them about Henry's plane being shot down, my mom stopped crying and just said "Well that took balls!" I'll never forget that.....she was right.
I love MASH & it continues to be one of my favorite shows. I watch 2 episodes MASH everyday as it airs on tv Monday through Friday. I love the combination of comedy and very serious tones.

You forgot to mention that the show only kept going past the first episode because the wife of the M.D of the company that had the rights (MGM i think ) loved it and persuaded her husband to keep it going a little longer . At the 3:56 mark, years ago the biggest reason given by the show's producers and creative team for killing off the LT COL HENRY BLAKE character was because the actor Maclean Stevenson was so difficult to work with and they did not want him to EVER return to the show. Of course, like most things in life there are probably several legitimate reasons behind any and all events. You can believe whatever you want.
There’s ppl who were/are such fans that they recreated the set in their yard. Mainly the swamp/tent. A few years back I was feeling the same of wishing I could recreate the Swamp and live in it..my grieving that the show wasn’t still going on At the time. And researching it I came up with people that did it. There’s another show that I really miss that I’m not trying to say it was nearly as good as this one but it was “northern exposure” had that something special. And I grieve missing that show too. And just like with mash I had no interest in it at first until someone else got me to watching it, are used to watch northern exposure reruns in the morning before work. Good times.
M*A*S*H is one of my all-time favourite shows. I recently saw every episode and there was no laugh track. I couldn't believe what a difference it made, and I definitely prefer to watch it this way. Now when I watch it with a laugh track I realize how ridiculous it sounds.

M*A*S*H is one of only a few shows I can watch with a laugh track because it is genuinely funny. So many shows use a laugh track to "show" the audience what is (supposed to be) funny and where they are supposed to laugh. I literally cannot watch many of these shows for more than a minute because of the laugh track. Not M*A*S*H, I don't think I've missed an episode; but I would love to view it w/o the laugh track.
Couple corrections. 1) They did use a soldier trying to catch something by being in the cold. Klinger, in "It Happened one Night", Season 4, Episode 3. Klinger, wearing next to nothing, goes into the cold. He's brought into Post-Op and warmed up. 2) They also didn't use the laugh track in Post-Op, Pre-Op, Scrub Room, and when they were doing Triage in front of the main building.
I guess, but it's the same as shooting yourself in the foot, kinda, if you really want out one could simply get a troubled psycho discharge section 8, or y not leave camp and get home somehow? In other words don't do it at all, it was a draft, right? just move to Canada, lotsa men n woman died, so wanting to catch your death of cold literally--just drink yourself stupid or assault a superior officer. Now MASH was kinda written off of Vietnam...think helicopters, and if a soldier complained of anything close to mental illness he got booted out dishonorably.
the network didn't want to do it cause like the episode sometimes you hear a bullet the one where Ron Howard dies in it, it shows how cruel war can be. the show as meant to make people laugh not cry that was their reason. what he didn't add was the last season when Radar goes into to tell them all about Henry's death they had to do that 2 times cause nobody in that room other than like he said Alan alda knew about it. hence their reaction was real and they had to do a 2nd take of it! the equipment dropping wasn't in the script either whoever dropped it was just some accident they decided to leave in to show the shock of everyone.
I liked Henry's death scene. It's good to have a reminder in these types of shows that sometimes the good guys die, and the humor is the therapy they need to keep soldiering on.
@@dawnsabo5664 a lot of veterans hated the show because it wasn't realistic. But I disagree, as far as shows in a war setting go it was probably the most accurate. Like the first episode one of Hawkeye's childhood friends dies right in front of him. Don't think Hogan's heroes ever showed something like that. MASH has a lot of trauma.
Trapper John was not a spin off. It was based off the movie. There was a lawsuit by the creators of the show. The judge determined that. The big clue was Trapper John MD said he was Chief of Surgery during the war. That was the same as in the book and film but Hawkeye was in the TV show.
I was attending college night courses when the last episode of M*A*S*H was going to be broadcast. This was before DVRs so you had to watch it live or get lucky and perhaps catch a rerun. We had an understanding Professor that let us leave 30 minutes early to make it home to watch it. I still remember that to this day! 🇺🇲 😁
One very important fact you forgot to mention!!! The writers did not come up with the idea for the show all on their own. M*A*S*H was a movie released in 1970 starring Donald Sutherland as Hawkeye, Elliott Gould as Trapper John, Sally Kellerman As Maj. Margaret 'Hot Lips' O'Houlihan and Tom Skerritt as Duke Forrest. , and in fact, Gary Burghoff was the only member of the movie cast to reprise his role as Radar in the TV series.
Seeing Radar holding back the tears while saluting at attention as Henry Blake boards his chopper and then Radar walking into the O.R. to deliver the sad news of Henry's death both get me misty-eyed each time I see those memorable scenes on tv.

Alan Alda was the only cast member who knew about Henry’s death beforehand (they got this right later, but the title was wrong, not sure why) 5.This was is a bit of a nitpick but, according the the result of a lawsuit by the producers of M*A*S*H, it was determined that Trapper John, M.D. was a spin-off of the film, not the show. 6. According to a statement he made on Alan Alda’s podcast, Gary Burghoff doesn’t have the teddy bear because it was sold by the friend who he’d entrusted to buy it for him 7.The fact about the time capsule is a bit confused. First, the characters didn’t bury the capsule at Fox Ranch, they buried it at the 4077th. Second, the time capsule that was dug up was a separate one done up by the cast and buried by the Fox commissary. No capsule was actually buried at the ranch. Edit: Forgot to mention that Leslie Nielson wasn’t a future star. He was already a well-known character actor with credits going back to the 50s. He didn’t get his start as a comedic actor (which is how most people know him) until Airplane! In 1980. Even his role on M*A*S*H was played pretty straight with the comedy happening around him.
I loved the Goodbye Henry episide. I was just a little girl, but it was real. - - It was true! I get amazed that people want surrealism and reject realism. The point of M*A*S*H, beyond the humor, was to bring to light the bitter reality of war. The truth is the truth; life contains laughter and terror, relief of pain and pain. The difficulties make the joys more worthwhile. Death is a part of life and cannot be separated from it.
Imagine being a doctor over there, finally, ready to go home, and at a supposed fun beach party--on the way home in a bus, a mother..why she was ever on the 4007 bus I don't understand, but she smothers her baby to save all other lives...It's a wonder the character of Hawkeye didn't crack up sooner considering how he took personally all his operations and patients.

I love Mash even the reruns . I was a kid when l started watching them and of all time had to bed for school but wait until mom was in her so l could quietly get to the TV in the dark to see it
The last episode occurred on the best evening of our work shift. It was during our evening of the last M*A*S*H episode and we all stuffed ourselves into the lounge where the TV had been pulled into the lounge. Thankfully NO patients were there nor demanded our attention - a GLORIOUS time - and we all watched the entire episode all the way through without interruption. It was as if the M*A*S*H gods had said, "Please, WATCH!" We had so much fun!
True story, the guy that plays psychiatrist Sidney Freedman (Alan Arbus)was in some hospital 4 some reason, and a REAL doctor sat down and discussed a case with him. I think they took most of the MASH medical/psychological cases from saved real doctor's records.
@@kevinhanney1979 i was reading in “The Last Days of M*A*S*H,” someone had given McLean Stevenson a medical book. He read it so thoroughly that when he came upon a car accident and someone had a heart injury, he was able to keep the person alive until paramedics came.
Ofcourse the construction worker wasn't impressed. A time capsule is supposed to be buried for decades or even hundreds of years. To dig it up only two months later: no wonder.
I remember hearing about an unofficial "rating" system for the final episode of MASH. In one town, the water pressure would mysteriously drop at regular intervals during that episode. Curiously, these changes coincided with the commercial breaks!
The same thing happened in Canada during the Olympics ice hockey gold medal game with USA several years ago. I can believe it with my, despite vcr's, because they watched it live not on replay.
M•A•S•H was my favorite show as a kid. I never missed an episode and was our family’s Mash trivia champ. I joined the Air Force and became a medic, spent two years of my life in the Middle East in various field hospitals. I can’t watch M*A*S*H now.
the show was taken from the movie. At the 30-year reunion of the cast and producers of the movie, the show was mentioned. They didn't even want to talk about it. The laugh track was used less and less because the show became less of a comedy and more of a drama.
Memorized this in 1986, right after Challenger went boom in front of my 1st grade class. I had wanted to be an astronaut more than anything, and seeing a civilian being allowed on the shuttle I had hope that maybe my life goal could be realized, then boom... I had lost any remaining sense of direction in my life at age 7 (Read as 16, considering I was also dealing with my mom at the time). M*A*S*H was about the only thing I had in common with my mother who was still suffering heavily at the time from PTSD. I sang this at church and she figured out I needed some help too. My favorite fact was the ratings of the final episode, 'Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen' and how more people watched this episode more than the Super bowl (would have been a different story had the Dallas Cowboys played lol)
He "condenses" the origin of the show. Robert Altman made a movie from the book, which oddly I was able to see at a post theater on a U.S. Army base in 1969 or 1970. The show was started a couple of years later without Altman's involvement, as far as I know.
Was my favorite show. I still remember getting the MASH trivia game for Christmas one year and playing it with my friend and neighbors dad. I had to take it over still sealed so he knew I didn’t read the cards beforehand. I cleaned his clock! Lol. Great memories. It wasn’t often my dad and I loved the same show, but we both sure loved it. My dad served during the Korean War.
Edward Herrmann guest starred on season 8, episode 17 titled, " Heal Thyself. " Of all the fine acting throughout the series, his portrayal of a man broken by war is extraordinary. At the finale of the episode, Herrmann gives a performance in 90 seconds that is heartbreaking. When he says, " I can't...I can't, " it's a brilliant piece of acting!
@@kevinhanney1979 see, I felt like they had to treat mental illness differently than today, because of the time period the show was set in. Even the most progressive people were products of the time. The standard was different. For instance, Hawkeye and other progressive characters used the term "Negro", a term that is anything but progressive today. Does this mean that Hawkeye and the crew weren't progressive and forward-thinking? No, it just the time period.
I was medivaced to a MASH in Vietnam on August 20, 1969. Spent the next 8 months in various army hospitals and discharged from active duty April 20, 1970. MASH the movie was released March 18,1970. Saw the movie shortly after returning home. Big Mistake. I was really freaked out.
I hadn't heard about Radar's teddy bear being found, but I still can't believe "Trapper John M.D." isn't available on any of the nostalgic TV channels like MeTV. I know it's a different Trapper, but I loved watching that show every week.
I agree with you. There's all sorts of retro tv channels but I've never seen Trapper John on any of them. Those channels seem to air more 30 minute comedies than hour long shows so that explains some of it. And Trapper John was a good show, but hardly iconic or groundbreaking.
I grew up watching the show and my son loves it to this day and loves Radar and Hawkeye. The series finale was also the day my mother found out she was pregnant with me from what she told me.
Seven years for a drama spin-off like "Trapper" John is nothing to sneeze at when a different actor, who did not like his role for similar reasons, takes the character further and even better.
I liked Pernell Robert’s as Trapper. It didn’t seem unrealistic since Trapper place many years after Mash took took place so it made sense Trapper aged
The one episode they didn't show was when Margaret gets married they say goodbye to her on the chopper pad, but when the chopper takes off, and Franks looks at it and says "goodbye Margaret" with a sad expression on his face. I felt so sorry for Frank.
It was one of very few dignified moments for Frank. I felt bad for him too. His character was comical and the show always made him look foolish, but at that moment you could tell he was in pain and alone.
It still sends shivers down my spine when Radar comes into the OR with news of Henry Blake's death. I pretty much have to prepare myself when its aired on tv because I still get a bit upset. This show is a big part of my life. My Dad use to watch it when I was a kid, and still does. I later found out my late Grandfather watched this show too. It's a great piece of American show biz history and still watch it. Unfortunately Las Vegas has reduced the air time of the show from always on one channel to another to one hour a day on one single channel. There will never be another show that was written or produced in the manner that this one was. Thank you to all the people that made this show possible and have been a great part of my life.
Gary Burghoff I think was the only actor in the initial MASH movie...a terrific actor, the scene with Radar trying 2 settle down a little Korean girl, to sleep, he sings a lullaby, maybe a clerk in Korea doesn't do THAT., but it's better acting n' writing than many TCM classics, I think.
I was so happy Henry was able to go home. I cried when Henry died like a family member. Later my thoughts on this was the writer’s wanted to show not everyone didn’t come home 😞😪.

As a Brit, I do not usually connect with US comedy. Mash is a totally different entity, every episode was a masterpiece, I never tire of watching it. I was touched hearing about Radar getting his Teddy back after 30 years. I know it was only a TV show, but Radar and hie Teddy Bear are some of the most touching moments.
The beginning shows were not masterpieces, really, jack ass comedy and belittling nurses. Ok, raffle off a nurse 4 ???? sex obviously, right? And having the priest win so no sex.
I loved Mash. Thank you for entertaining me. I miss this show. And it made me remember so much about those days. I loved everyone on this series. You always surprise me with your Videos. And you make me so happy to be reminded of days gone by ❤ ❤

The thing I enjoyed they made it real for me. So no one show was better than the rest. Glad no laugh tract. I hated shows when they used . I know when to laugh , didn't need there urgings ❤️
I saw this in England in the 70's without a laugh track. It makes for a very different atmosphere in the show. I got the dvd to see it again without the laughter. Please try it if you haven't already. Nice video, thanks
Not a criticism, just a piece of interesting trivia: Trapper John MD was considered a spin-off of the Robert Altman film, but specifically not a spin-off of the MASH TV show. The Altman film was a comedy, but had a whole cinema verite thing that made the comedy a little more low-key. Trapper John seems to have capitalized on that presentation by having made itself a straight drama. And though I it wasn't on forever and ever like MASH, it was definitely a successful show, having run for seven seasons.
Some recurring characters were priceless, Alan Arbus as Sidney Freedman, Edward Winter as Col. Flagg/Capt. Halloran and I especially enjoy Eldon Quick as the officious and painfully puritanical Capt Sloan/Pratt. He's only in 3 episode, but I can visualize him blackmailing some minor ne'er do-well into doing his weapons qualification.
I can add another fact about M*A*S*H. In 1983, some of the business owners in Hannibal, MO wanted to invite Harry Morgan as Col. Potter to appear in the annual Tom Sawyer Days parade. It was to be billed as the 'homecoming for Col Potter'. Unfortunately, the city council refused to pay the appearance fee for Harry Morgan. I was living just south of Hannibal at that time and was shocked by their cheapskate move.
I loved the show, however I loved the books even more. I read them in my twenties often on the way to work. I would burst out laughing in a crowded train carriage and got many a strange look!
I love this show and have all 11 seasons. Hawkeye was always my favorite. My Dad's two favorites were Hawkeye and Klinger, and my Mom loved Col. Potter.
Alan wore a used soldiers pair of boots to put him in character. Gary’s hand was deformed, that’s why he is always holding something or you never fully see both his hands. I watched all the episodes, several times through the years. That’s probably why I ended up in the Army, eventually became a helicopter pilot and fly an air ambulance helicopter 🚁 to this day.
Funny. A buddy and I have been texting each other favorite MASH quotes all morning. "That's Frank's bag!" "I thought you were Frank's bag?" BTW, Trapper John is always my favorite character.

So, people didn't like the episode where Henry Blake was killed. I remember that episode and how powerful it was. If the intent was to show the senseless wastefulness of war, it couldn't have succeeded better. Top notch

Exactly. Trapper leaving Mash was handled way worse in my opinion. There was just nothing in that episode. People say leaving without saying bye to hawkeye was not in his character but I definitely see Trapper not caring too much about it and just leaving after all they were just roommates they didn't choose to be in Korea together Trapper has family and friends back home and I don't think he has ever showed as much emotions about the relationship with Hawkeye as Hawkeye did. Trapper seemed way more easy going and les of a moralist than Hawkeye he could even get along with Frank so I don't really think he cared about anybody from the camp really.
I'm going through all the series at the moment and just watched that episode today and cried at the end when Radar went into the operation room and said what he said.

I am in the UK and I never missed an episode of MASH, I now have it on DVD and have watch it so many times I have lost count. I still laugh and cry at certain parts. I am 74 and it is still my all time favourite TV show

Since they didn't use the laugh track in the UK do your dvds have them? Here you can turn off the canned laughter and its like experiencing the show in a whole new way, so I imagine if you never heard them there and then turned them on it would be seem like a cheesy addition

The dog tags that Jamie Farr wore while playing his role were his actual dog tags from his time in the Army. Also, while everyone despised Frank Burns, the character, Larry Linville, the actor who played him, was well-liked by the rest of the cast.

Honestly I’m really glad they got rid of Frank and Col. Blake. The replacements Col. Potter and Charles are much better characters. Frank was an idiot and a bad surgeon and would constantly sexually harass Margaret and also Colonel Blake was incompetent at his job. Colonel Potter and Charles Winchester are much better characters. I understand why people are the way hey are at 4077 mash and I also understands that these people might be a little bit crazy but they’re also very good at their jobs when it comes time to get serious about work. Charles Winchester, while still being full of himself, got rid of all the negative characteristics that Frank Burns brought to the show. He is still snobby, and he still hates Hawkeye and BJ but he is also a much better than Frank Burns. Colonel Potter was also a much better leader and didn’t let Hawkeye and BJ or Hawkeye and Honeycutt push him around like they did with Colonel Blake.

Alan Alda's Dog Tags were his own actual dog tags as well. He severed in the Army during the actual Korean War as well.

M*A*S*H is one of my favorite shows of all times. I was a child when it started and a young adult when it ended. I loved the cast but the original cast was my favorite. The character "Hawkeye" helped me form beliefs I still have to this day. A show about war, M*A*S*H proved that mankind's strongest defense and weapon is words. It's quips, bon mots and tirades, although not lethal like gunfire, bombs and mines, won a lot of battles for the 4077th. I am so glad I experienced M*A*S*H in my youth.

@@laustcawz2089 Yes, it is EVEN MORE anti war, far more iconoclastic, incredibly more disdainful of religion, and a bunch of other things that, in needing to be debated as to nature before any discussion concerning the effect the inclusion of the event had on the entire work, demonstrate that Robert Altman created something timeless. I might have to watch it again tonight but strictly relying on my memory, it was Trapper that started the process that got THAT Frank Burns committed. One of my favorite things about the movie --though it bores me to watch that part-- is how it satirized what was, at the time, a growing mania with football and paralleled it with how people who are not likely to bleed in a war come to perceive the war when it is presented --and it is, "presented" (spectacle in the philosophical sense) --I am surprised that there is no TV sponsorship at this point-- to them in that mishmash of selected daily events that is still termed "news." One thing that always frustrated me about the show was that opportunities to satirize some things (I cannot point to a specific right now) were passed over or defanged. I will freely admit that with satire at the level presented by the movie, MASH wouldn't have lasted as long as it did. Someone, somewhere, will always become uncomfortable when the world changes in some way or another (the rate is less relevant than the nature of the change -in my opinion, at least--) and, I feel that, as people get older, the rate of change appears to accelerate. I feel this is where some of Alan Alda's comments in some past interviews concerning the nature of Hawkeye's liberalism in relation to his own perception of self originate. That is to say, the movie is just as loud a statement as it ever was and the show has made more hawks into owls -rather than doves- than some might have either expected or find comfortable; nevertheless, I would say that the changes TheKrazySexyKool experience in their personal believes would have taken place with the movie (after watching it a few times, the satire is forceful and iconoclastic) just more abruptly. MASH gave parents the excuse of time for the changes in their children's personalities and beliefs as teens and young adults. Given what happened with Judas Priest and Twisted Sister, I am often surprised that "Suicide is painless... it brings on many changes..." hasn't been vilified... Of course, Painless had a very large reason to live and it might well have been the first time anyone mentioned erectile dysfunction outside of an examination room. It might also have been the first time anyone questioned how being a man is defined by our society... a brave man once requested me to answer questions that are key...
I loved to hear the Teddy bear was returned. I was shoked about the time capsule. The death of Henry Blake still hurts when I watch it. While the chopper takes off and Radar is at attebtion saluting and crying.. Wow what a scene.

I was a teenager when MASH first started, & was in the U.S. Army when it finished. In fact I even camped out on a hill over looking their set in the Santa Monica hills. I was able to get two items from the set, one was from the huge Goodbye sign in rocks, I have three of those rocks. The 2nd item was a 4x4 fence post that had MASH 4077th painted on it. That post now sits in a 5 gallon bucket in cement. My memories from a show that I'll always love until the day the good lord calls me home!

The character of Henry Blake’s death reflected the realities of war. It fir perfectly into the theme of the show.
I'll never forget that when I first saw it in 1975. I thought the show was over.
The producers killed Henry Blake as an FU to Mclean Stevenson and guarantee he couldn't come back.

One of the saddest episodes is when Henry died. And I am so glad they did keep Klinger. He was so funny especially when he pretended he was pregnant.
Klinger was a treasure throughout...and he got his character developed to more than a guy dressing funny trying to get out.
My favorite was when Col. Blake went home. I hated the ending. However, in real life and war, these things did happen. It was a stroke of genius. The emotions of the cast were real. Especially Radar's. His look said it all.

The fact that some one gave the teddy bear back was awesome and I had found the time capsule I would have kept it and displayed it. It's a big part of 70's history.
My mother died 2 days before mother's day this year and Mash was her favorite show. She used to complain that when I was born it was during a Mash special and she had to wait almost a year to see it in reruns lol. Hulu binging mash has become a thing for me lately so I was really hyped to see this vid.

Cutting out Henry’s death announcement scene is insane. It is one of, if not the most moving scene in the series.
For real! That final scene is a real tear-jerker. It still angers me that they killed Henry off like that - even though I understand why they did.
@@sking2173 If it makes you feel any better, years later McLean Stevenson in an interview said that Henry didn't really die; that Henry had gotten on the wrong plane and went to Singapore and spent the rest of the war trying to get home and convince everyone he was alive. The Army just assumed Henry was on the plane that spun in.

One of my favorite episodes was when Radar wrote to Charles' mother asking for something from home. When Charles opened up the Christmas gift of his old ski hat, the melancholy joy and gratitude he expressed was palpable.

I met Dr. Hornberger in 1993 in South Korea. We was the featured speaker at the annual US Army South Korea Medical Conference. He was retired at the Makaha Towers Golf Resort on Oahu, Hawaii. Interesting fellow, but humble. He never expected the success of his story but enjoyed the sunshine and golf.
I don't even care if any of these are true or not, it's got clips that trigger flashbacks of the show, which I loved long before I understood most of the jokes. It was poignant, funny, sad, brutally honest, filmed in such a great way. You laughed, cried, and thought about it for long afterward. It had moral crises, love, highlited political issues, race issues, the difficulty of being separated from loved ones, and inspired many other shows. Thanks & love to everybody, stay safe & know we'll survive this current nightmare!
I just received the box set of MASH from my parents for Christmas. I'm up to season 9. I've seen every episode at least twice before anyway, mostly when I was a kid, but I became an actor 3 years ago, at the age of 50, so it's even more interesting watching them now. MASH is my favorite tv show of all-time!

Wayne Rogers played a doctor on "House Calls". I was so confused. His character on "House Calls" wasn't Trapper John, but Pernell Roberts was Trapper John on "Trapper John, M.D.".
What could be mentioned as a piece of trivia is that in season 1, Henry's wife was named Mildred but was changed to Lorraine later. Col. Potter's wife was named Mildred. Incidentally, Harry Morgan is the only actor to play one character in an earlier episode (crazy Gen. Steele) then be added as a full time member of the cast when he became Col. Sherman T. Potter.

If you listen closely to the lyrics of General Steele's song (When the sun goes down ....) it's a little bit racist. When everyone else starts singing it they sing slightly different lyrics.

I remember my mother and I crying when Radar told them about Henry's plane being shot down, my mom stopped crying and just said "Well that took balls!" I'll never forget that.....she was right.

At the 3:56 mark, years ago the biggest reason given by the show's producers and creative team for killing off the LT COL HENRY BLAKE character was because the actor Maclean Stevenson was so difficult to work with and they did not want him to EVER return to the show. Of course, like most things in life there are probably several legitimate reasons behind any and all events. You can believe whatever you want.
There’s ppl who were/are such fans that they recreated the set in their yard. Mainly the swamp/tent. A few years back I was feeling the same of wishing I could recreate the Swamp and live in it..my grieving that the show wasn’t still going on At the time. And researching it I came up with people that did it. There’s another show that I really miss that I’m not trying to say it was nearly as good as this one but it was “northern exposure” had that something special. And I grieve missing that show too. And just like with mash I had no interest in it at first until someone else got me to watching it, are used to watch northern exposure reruns in the morning before work. Good times.
My favorite fact was that Gary Burghoff was reunited with his teddy bear.

M*A*S*H is one of only a few shows I can watch with a laugh track because it is genuinely funny. So many shows use a laugh track to "show" the audience what is (supposed to be) funny and where they are supposed to laugh. I literally cannot watch many of these shows for more than a minute because of the laugh track. Not M*A*S*H, I don't think I've missed an episode; but I would love to view it w/o the laugh track.
Couple corrections.
1) They did use a soldier trying to catch something by being in the cold. Klinger, in "It Happened one Night", Season 4, Episode 3. Klinger, wearing next to nothing, goes into the cold. He's brought into Post-Op and warmed up.
2) They also didn't use the laugh track in Post-Op, Pre-Op, Scrub Room, and when they were doing Triage in front of the main building.

I guess, but it's the same as shooting yourself in the foot, kinda, if you really want out one could simply get a troubled psycho discharge section 8, or y not leave camp and get home somehow? In other words don't do it at all, it was a draft, right? just move to Canada, lotsa men n woman died, so wanting to catch your death of cold literally--just drink yourself stupid or assault a superior officer. Now MASH was kinda written off of Vietnam...think helicopters, and if a soldier complained of anything close to mental illness he got booted out dishonorably.

The death of Henry was a truly great piece of writing, something sadly missing on tv
the network didn't want to do it cause like the episode sometimes you hear a bullet the one where Ron Howard dies in it, it shows how cruel war can be. the show as meant to make people laugh not cry that was their reason. what he didn't add was the last season when Radar goes into to tell them all about Henry's death they had to do that 2 times cause nobody in that room other than like he said Alan alda knew about it. hence their reaction was real and they had to do a 2nd take of it!
the equipment dropping wasn't in the script either whoever dropped it was just some accident they decided to leave in to show the shock of everyone.
M.A.S.H. IS, in my opinion, THE GREATEST comedy television series EVER made!!

I liked Henry's death scene. It's good to have a reminder in these types of shows that sometimes the good guys die, and the humor is the therapy they need to keep soldiering on.

@@dawnsabo5664 a lot of veterans hated the show because it wasn't realistic. But I disagree, as far as shows in a war setting go it was probably the most accurate. Like the first episode one of Hawkeye's childhood friends dies right in front of him. Don't think Hogan's heroes ever showed something like that. MASH has a lot of trauma.

Trapper John was not a spin off. It was based off the movie. There was a lawsuit by the creators of the show. The judge determined that. The big clue was Trapper John MD said he was Chief of Surgery during the war. That was the same as in the book and film but Hawkeye was in the TV show.
I was attending college night courses when the last episode of M*A*S*H was going to be broadcast. This was before DVRs so you had to watch it live or get lucky and perhaps catch a rerun. We had an understanding Professor that let us leave 30 minutes early to make it home to watch it. I still remember that to this day! 🇺🇲 😁

One very important fact you forgot to mention!!! The writers did not come up with the idea for the show all on their own. M*A*S*H was a movie released in 1970 starring Donald Sutherland as Hawkeye, Elliott Gould as Trapper John, Sally Kellerman As Maj. Margaret 'Hot Lips' O'Houlihan and Tom Skerritt as Duke Forrest. , and in fact, Gary Burghoff was the only member of the movie cast to reprise his role as Radar in the TV series.

Seeing Radar holding back the tears while saluting at attention as Henry Blake boards his chopper and then Radar walking into the O.R. to deliver the sad news of Henry's death both get me misty-eyed each time I see those memorable scenes on tv.

4. Alan Alda was the only cast member who knew about Henry’s death beforehand (they got this right later, but the title was wrong, not sure why)
5.This was is a bit of a nitpick but, according the the result of a lawsuit by the producers of M*A*S*H, it was determined that Trapper John, M.D. was a spin-off of the film, not the show.
6. According to a statement he made on Alan Alda’s podcast, Gary Burghoff doesn’t have the teddy bear because it was sold by the friend who he’d entrusted to buy it for him
7.The fact about the time capsule is a bit confused. First, the characters didn’t bury the capsule at Fox Ranch, they buried it at the 4077th. Second, the time capsule that was dug up was a separate one done up by the cast and buried by the Fox commissary. No capsule was actually buried at the ranch.
Edit: Forgot to mention that Leslie Nielson wasn’t a future star. He was already a well-known character actor with credits going back to the 50s. He didn’t get his start as a comedic actor (which is how most people know him) until Airplane! In 1980. Even his role on M*A*S*H was played pretty straight with the comedy happening around him.

I get amazed that people want surrealism and reject realism.
The point of M*A*S*H, beyond the humor, was to bring to light the bitter reality of war. The truth is the truth; life contains laughter and terror, relief of pain and pain. The difficulties make the joys more worthwhile. Death is a part of life and cannot be separated from it.
Imagine being a doctor over there, finally, ready to go home, and at a supposed fun beach party--on the way home in a bus, a mother..why she was ever on the 4007 bus I don't understand, but she smothers her baby to save all other lives...It's a wonder the character of Hawkeye didn't crack up sooner considering how he took personally all his operations and patients.

In my opinion last scene of McClean Stevenson last episode was one of the best.
I love Mash even the reruns . I was a kid when l started watching them and of all time had to bed for school but wait until mom was in her so l could quietly get to the TV in the dark to see it
The last episode occurred on the best evening of our work shift.
It was during our evening of the last M*A*S*H episode and we all stuffed ourselves into the lounge where the TV had been pulled into the lounge. Thankfully NO patients were there nor demanded our attention - a GLORIOUS time - and we all watched the entire episode all the way through without interruption. It was as if the M*A*S*H gods had said, "Please, WATCH!" We had so much fun!
True story, the guy that plays psychiatrist Sidney Freedman (Alan Arbus)was in some hospital 4 some reason, and a REAL doctor sat down and discussed a case with him. I think they took most of the MASH medical/psychological cases from saved real doctor's records.

He read it so thoroughly that when he came upon a car accident and someone had a heart injury, he was able to keep the person alive until paramedics came.
The construction worker wasn't impressed because he thought he hit Pay Dirt😅🤣😂, When Alan told him to keep it he saw his dollar signs Fall Away😅🤣😂
Ofcourse the construction worker wasn't impressed. A time capsule is supposed to be buried for decades or even hundreds of years. To dig it up only two months later: no wonder.

I remember hearing about an unofficial "rating" system for the final episode of MASH.
In one town, the water pressure would mysteriously drop at regular intervals during that episode.
Curiously, these changes coincided with the commercial breaks!

I joined the Air Force and became a medic, spent two years of my life in the Middle East in various field hospitals. I can’t watch M*A*S*H now.

the show was taken from the movie. At the 30-year reunion of the cast and producers of the movie, the show was mentioned. They didn't even want to talk about it.
The laugh track was used less and less because the show became less of a comedy and more of a drama.
Memorized this in 1986, right after Challenger went boom in front of my 1st grade class. I had wanted to be an astronaut more than anything, and seeing a civilian being allowed on the shuttle I had hope that maybe my life goal could be realized, then boom... I had lost any remaining sense of direction in my life at age 7 (Read as 16, considering I was also dealing with my mom at the time). M*A*S*H was about the only thing I had in common with my mother who was still suffering heavily at the time from PTSD. I sang this at church and she figured out I needed some help too.

My favorite fact was the ratings of the final episode, 'Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen' and how more people watched this episode more than the Super bowl (would have been a different story had the Dallas Cowboys played lol)
He "condenses" the origin of the show. Robert Altman made a movie from the book, which oddly I was able to see at a post theater on a U.S. Army base in 1969 or 1970. The show was started a couple of years later without Altman's involvement, as far as I know.

Was my favorite show. I still remember getting the MASH trivia game for Christmas one year and playing it with my friend and neighbors dad. I had to take it over still sealed so he knew I didn’t read the cards beforehand. I cleaned his clock! Lol. Great memories. It wasn’t often my dad and I loved the same show, but we both sure loved it. My dad served during the Korean War.

Edward Herrmann guest starred on season 8, episode 17 titled, " Heal Thyself. " Of all the fine acting throughout the series, his portrayal of a man broken by war is extraordinary. At the finale of the episode, Herrmann gives a performance in 90 seconds that is heartbreaking. When he says, " I can't...I can't, " it's a brilliant piece of acting!

@@kevinhanney1979 see, I felt like they had to treat mental illness differently than today, because of the time period the show was set in. Even the most progressive people were products of the time. The standard was different. For instance, Hawkeye and other progressive characters used the term "Negro", a term that is anything but progressive today. Does this mean that Hawkeye and the crew weren't progressive and forward-thinking? No, it just the time period.

I was medivaced to a MASH in Vietnam on August 20, 1969. Spent the next 8 months in various army hospitals and discharged from active duty April 20, 1970. MASH the movie was released March 18,1970. Saw the movie shortly after returning home. Big Mistake. I was really freaked out.

I hadn't heard about Radar's teddy bear being found, but I still can't believe "Trapper John M.D." isn't available on any of the nostalgic TV channels like MeTV. I know it's a different Trapper, but I loved watching that show every week.

I agree with you. There's all sorts of retro tv channels but I've never seen Trapper John on any of them. Those channels seem to air more 30 minute comedies than hour long shows so that explains some of it. And Trapper John was a good show, but hardly iconic or groundbreaking.

I grew up watching the show and my son loves it to this day and loves Radar and Hawkeye. The series finale was also the day my mother found out she was pregnant with me from what she told me.
Seven years for a drama spin-off like "Trapper" John is nothing to sneeze at when a different actor, who did not like his role for similar reasons, takes the character further and even better.
Would have been 10000 times better with Rodgers in it. I just couldn’t get over such a drastic cast change.
I liked Pernell Robert’s as Trapper. It didn’t seem unrealistic since Trapper place many years after Mash took took place so it made sense Trapper aged
That character was NOT Trapper in any way, shape or form.

The one episode they didn't show was when Margaret gets married they say goodbye to her on the chopper pad, but when the chopper takes off, and Franks looks at it and says "goodbye Margaret" with a sad expression on his face. I felt so sorry for Frank.
It was one of very few dignified moments for Frank. I felt bad for him too. His character was comical and the show always made him look foolish, but at that moment you could tell he was in pain and alone.
It still sends shivers down my spine when Radar comes into the OR with news of Henry Blake's death. I pretty much have to prepare myself when its aired on tv because I still get a bit upset.
This show is a big part of my life. My Dad use to watch it when I was a kid, and still does. I later found out my late Grandfather watched this show too. It's a great piece of American show biz history and still watch it. Unfortunately Las Vegas has reduced the air time of the show from always on one channel to another to one hour a day on one single channel.
There will never be another show that was written or produced in the manner that this one was. Thank you to all the people that made this show possible and have been a great part of my life.
Gary Burghoff I think was the only actor in the initial MASH movie...a terrific actor, the scene with Radar trying 2 settle down a little Korean girl, to sleep, he sings a lullaby, maybe a clerk in Korea doesn't do THAT., but it's better acting n' writing than many TCM classics, I think.
I was so happy Henry was able to go home. I cried when Henry died like a family member. Later my thoughts on this was the writer’s wanted to show not everyone didn’t come home 😞😪.
The real reason was McClean got greedy , and like Suzanne Summers from Three's Company , was shown they didn't need them.

As a Brit, I do not usually connect with US comedy. Mash is a totally different entity, every episode was a masterpiece, I never tire of watching it.
I was touched hearing about Radar getting his Teddy back after 30 years. I know it was only a TV show, but Radar and hie Teddy Bear are some of the most touching moments.
The beginning shows were not masterpieces, really, jack ass comedy and belittling nurses. Ok, raffle off a nurse 4 ???? sex obviously, right? And having the priest win so no sex.
I loved Mash. Thank you for entertaining me. I miss this show. And it made me remember so much about those days. I loved everyone on this series. You always surprise me with your Videos. And you make me so happy to be reminded of days gone by ❤ ❤

@@FactsVerse Honestly I loved them all. Klinger was a riot Radar was a great actor, he helped make the show. Hawkeye really was the show. They were all super. The thing I enjoyed they made it real for me. So no one show was better than the rest. Glad no laugh tract. I hated shows when they used . I know when to laugh , didn't need there urgings ❤️

I saw this in England in the 70's without a laugh track. It makes for a very different atmosphere in the show. I got the dvd to see it again without the laughter. Please try it if you haven't already.

That was an excellent tv show i loved it !!
Not a criticism, just a piece of interesting trivia: Trapper John MD was considered a spin-off of the Robert Altman film, but specifically not a spin-off of the MASH TV show. The Altman film was a comedy, but had a whole cinema verite thing that made the comedy a little more low-key. Trapper John seems to have capitalized on that presentation by having made itself a straight drama. And though I it wasn't on forever and ever like MASH, it was definitely a successful show, having run for seven seasons.
Some recurring characters were priceless, Alan Arbus as Sidney Freedman, Edward Winter as Col. Flagg/Capt. Halloran and I especially enjoy Eldon Quick as the officious and painfully puritanical Capt Sloan/Pratt. He's only in 3 episode, but I can visualize him blackmailing some minor ne'er do-well into doing his weapons qualification.
As for Col. Flagg, I just always figured that his name in the first episode he premiered in in season 1 was just an alias.
Just cross out "machine gun" and write "pizza oven".
Col. Flagg was friggin' hilarious.
One of my favorite episodes was the dream episode which nobody talks about. It was kind of dark.

I can add another fact about M*A*S*H. In 1983, some of the business owners in Hannibal, MO wanted to invite Harry Morgan as Col. Potter to appear in the annual Tom Sawyer Days parade. It was to be billed as the 'homecoming for Col Potter'. Unfortunately, the city council refused to pay the appearance fee for Harry Morgan. I was living just south of Hannibal at that time and was shocked by their cheapskate move.
i heard blake and trapper left because they were assured the show would be an "ensemble" cast. it turned out to be the alan alda show.
But they'd probably pay for a Kardashian.
I loved the show, however I loved the books even more. I read them in my twenties often on the way to work. I would burst out laughing in a crowded train carriage and got many a strange look!

I love this show and have all 11 seasons. Hawkeye was always my favorite. My Dad's two favorites were Hawkeye and Klinger, and my Mom loved Col. Potter.

Alan wore a used soldiers pair of boots to put him in character. Gary’s hand was deformed, that’s why he is always holding something or you never fully see both his hands. I watched all the episodes, several times through the years. That’s probably why I ended up in the Army, eventually became a helicopter pilot and fly an air ambulance helicopter 🚁 to this day.
Alan as Hawkeye also wore real dog tags from two different soldiers, i think from Vietnam.
And he wore those boots for the entire series.
