Amen.

    Our "modern" ears tend to think this is a sad chorale. In fact it reflects the deeply loving and caring hand of our lord Jesus on our shoulder. Even on the cross our omnipotent Lord was fully in charge of everything. Don't think of "poor Jesus having to suffer for our sins".
    Don't cry for Jesus, rather cry over your sins and embrace this most precious gift.
    May our Lord bless you and happy good friday from Germany.

    Paul Simon borrowed this from Bach for American Tune (1975)
    Bach borrowed it from Paul Gerhardt (1607 - 1676)
    Gerhardt borrowed it from Hans Hassler (1564 - 1612).
    Paul Simon's song American Tune is actually a 400 year old German tune. Like those who arrived on the Mayflower, the melody came from Germany and became an American Tune.

      If you want your mind blown, having heard these, now look up "Nun seid ihr wohl gerochen", the final chorale from six days of Christmas oratorios. It's so festive and Christmas-y with trumpets and timpani, and then the choir sings this Good Friday melody. It's really brilliant, both musically and liturgically

    Difficult to fathom that Bach was relatively obscure for more than half a century following his death. What a genius was this master! How exquisite so many of his melodies, and this one is no exception.

      It was an era without recording equipment and printing was a manually taxing endeavor. Because of that music wasn't really a permanent thing and not conducive to immortality. To the best of my knowledge Bach was during his lifetime by the standards of his time but society just wasn't set up to preserve his work.

    • @Bjowolf2
      @Bjowolf2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This tune is actually older - Hans Leo Hassler ( 1500s) "Mein Gmut ist mir vervirret" ( My mood is confused ) - and slightly changed by Paul Gerhardt (1600s) into the hymn "Oh, Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" ( Oh, head full of blood and wounds ), which Bach would then adapt for this masterpiece.
      Later on this wonderful tune would reappear as "Because All Men are Brothers" ( Pete Seeger & Peter, Paul and Mary ) and in Paul Simon's beautiful "American Tune".

O Haupt had been one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful things I have ever had the privilege of being alive on this earth and having ears to listen to but the entire beast was... For me as living in a culture historically strongly influenced by Lutheranism, these chorales ultimately represent the sacred music of our cultural tradition, here divinely harmonized and set by Bach in his cantatas and passions, in the same way the even older tradition of Orthodox sacred music has influenced the Russian culture. The difference is, as the Orthodox liturgical music tradition is well alive and respected today among Orthodox Christians - though our hymns still are found in our hymnals and, I guess, will not be totally forgotten in near future - the Lutheran hymns are nowadays neglected as old-fashioned and "dull" and replaced with gospel or other popular tunes, which bear nothing of the spiritual depth of the old hymns and, maybe even more, their texts.

      As an American Lutheran (member of ELCA) my congregation still sings many of the old German hymns such as this and hymns from sources such as Geistliche Kirchengesange, Koln, 1623, but there seems to be a movement towards replacing these with modern hymns from places such as Latin America and Africa in an attempt to encourage diversity and shed our image as a northern European church. I personally find this to be a very unfortunate trend. I agree, at least to an extent, with Marshall McLuhan's sentiment that "the medium is the message." For me, hymns with simple, repetitive texts accompanied by music that sounds like it was written for a mariachi band seem out of place in the context of Lutheran worship.

Or not, I have a tendency to get tears in my eyes listening to this. Or I would smile with tears in my eyes. Does it matter? The is not a single doubt in my mind that this is being performed with respect, or else they would not be doing it in the first place. I have visited St. Sebaldus Church in Nuremberg several times in my life. Although Lutheran, it still contains the medieval shrine to St. Sebaldus, as well as statues of the Virgin Mary, the kinds of things that Protestant iconoclasts destroyed elsewhere. Priests said the Lutheran version of the Mass in this church while wearing vestments, right into the 18th century. Luther never intended to start a new denomination. His reformed church was still "catholic", and Bach's music exemplifies this, so much so that it is heard in St. Peter's in Rome. Bach's music will always be my favorite. He built cathedrals made of sound.

      Bach was of course profoundly religious but I don't think you have to be to appreciate the beauty of this and to understand the intensity of the spirituality that guided its writing. There's a nice moment in an interview with Andras Schiff discussing that aspect - how, even if you aren't religious, Bach can still bring you to an understanding of the idea of God through his music; if I can find it I'll link to it.

    O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden,
    voll Schmerz und voller Hohn,
    o Haupt, zum Spott gebunden
    mit einer Dornenkron,
    o Haupt, sonst schön gezieret[3]
    mit höchster Ehr und Zier,
    jetzt aber hoch schimpfieret:[4]
    gegrüßet seist du mir!
    2.
    Du edles Angesichte,
    davor sonst schrickt und scheut
    das große Weltgewichte:
    wie bist du so bespeit,
    wie bist du so erbleichet!
    Wer hat dein Augenlicht,
    dem sonst kein Licht nicht gleichet,
    so schändlich zugericht’?
    3.
    Die Farbe deiner Wangen,
    der roten Lippen Pracht
    ist hin und ganz vergangen;
    des blassen Todes Macht
    hat alles hingenommen,
    hat alles hingerafft,
    und daher bist du kommen[5]
    von deines Leibes Kraft.
    4.
    Nun, was du, Herr, erduldet,[6]
    ist alles meine Last;
    ich hab es selbst verschuldet,[7]
    was du getragen hast.
    Schau her, hier steh ich Armer,
    der Zorn verdienet hat.
    Gib mir, o mein Erbarmer,

    5.[8]
    Erkenne mich, mein Hüter,
    mein Hirte, nimm mich an.
    Von dir, Quell aller Güter,
    ist mir viel Guts getan;
    dein Mund hat mich gelabet
    mit Milch und süßer Kost,
    dein Geist hat mich begabet
    mit mancher Himmelslust.
    6.
    Ich will hier bei dir stehen,
    verachte mich doch nicht;
    von dir will ich nicht gehen,
    wenn dir dein Herze bricht;
    wenn dein Haupt wird erblassen
    im letzten Todesstoß,
    alsdann will ich dich fassen
    in meinen Arm und Schoß.
    7.[9]
    Es dient zu meinen Freuden
    und tut mir herzlich wohl,
    wenn ich in deinem Leiden,
    mein Heil, mich finden soll.
    Ach möcht ich, o mein Leben,
    an deinem Kreuze hier
    mein Leben von mir geben,
    wie wohl geschähe mir!
    8.
    Ich danke dir von Herzen,
    o Jesu, liebster Freund,
    für deines Todes Schmerzen,
    da du’s so gut gemeint.
    Ach gib, dass ich mich halte
    zu dir und deiner Treu
    und, wenn ich nun[10] erkalte,
    in dir mein Ende sei.
    9.
    Wenn ich einmal soll scheiden,
    so scheide nicht von mir,
    wenn ich den Tod soll leiden,
    so tritt du dann herfür;
    wenn mir am allerbängsten
    wird um das Herze sein,
    so reiß mich aus den Ängsten
    kraft deiner Angst und Pein.
    10.
    Erscheine mir zum Schilde,
    zum Trost in meinem Tod,
    und lass mich sehn dein Bilde
    in deiner Kreuzesnot.
    Da will ich nach dir blicken,
    da will ich glaubensvoll
    dich fest an mein Herz drücken.
    Wer so stirbt, der stirbt wohl.

    Il s"agit d'une mélodie de 1601 réutilisée par Bach pour ce choral. Les différentes versions proposées ici correspondent aux quatre utilisations de cette mélodie. Dans la dernière, la mélodie a été légèrement transformée par quelques ornementations. Par la suite, cette mélodie a été reprise pour des cantiques, dont en français Confie à Dieu ta route.

    found in the same work, it very interesting to have in one continuous flow various Bach harmonization of the same (divinely beautiful) old hymn. For budding composers, a great exercise is to harmonize the naked choral and then compare with Bach's. Ouch!!! Here is a good example that explains the attraction Bach has had on jazz musicians. Among many traits, Bach is the Great Re-harmonizer .

      Claude Dietrich agreed. they’re all special but that last one is just breathtaking eh? but interesting to hear the shift from major to minor, and the increasing dissonance, and how those significant changes still serve the melody beautifully.

      Der Text ist von Luther. Bach hat, wie viele andere Musikstücke, diesen Choral in sein Werk eingebaut. Heute würde man sagen: Plagiat oder geklaut. Damals war man großzügiger. Am meisten hat Bach sich selbst beklaut. Nur so entsteht ein großes vielstimmiges einzigartiges Werk.
