So sad to think that so many humans are alive, who, for want of touching a button, can hear this music - and dont bother. Well, not quite true - they have to do some work in learning to hear the music, and in knowing which are the best bits to hear. But I can say, like you, that experiencing the experience of properly listening to this music is one of the highlights of having existed on earth.

Always thought the way Tarkovsky used Bach in his work was brilliant. Two absolute artistic giants! There are other directors, there are other composers, but then there is Bach and Tarkovsky.

About 25 years ago I sang in the chorus when Magdalena recorded some pieces with Les Musiciens du L’Ouvre. Watching her sing, and watching her technique in creating this beautiful sound has stayed with me. I teach young girls and teenagers to sing, and I try and instill in them this simplicity in creating the most beautiful sound. You need to take away all the false, manipulated sound created by bad tension in the body, face, jaw etc, and then get used to allowing the breath and sound to just pour out. Even when she had a really bad sore throat and was taking antibiotics, I watched her from the side of the stage; she kept her voice feeling forward and bright, and sang as beautifully as ever, despite being poorly. She was and is a beautiful singer, who has stayed true to her sound. 🤩

For many years I listen with great pleasure to this great and quite heavenly artist

Magdalena is the first singer that gave me permission to really let emotion unleash in Bach arias. Her musicianship is very special. It’s so delicately subtle and beautiful.

Lo que más me gusta de esta interpretación es su simpleza sin esos vibratos exagerados que transforman el misticismo de la musica de Bach en una melodía romántica con la vocalista compitiendo con el violin por el protagonismo. Además refleja muy bien el espíritu del barroco, orientado a lo divino más que al personalismo terrenal.

In religious texts, 'mercy' is the usual translation. But in secular texts 'pity' is commonly used. Be that as it may, Bach is concerned with profound human emotions here. Salvation or deliverance is not the objective because nothing can alter the cause of Peter's suffering.

I want to see these films
I grew up Catholic and then lapsed because, well, it's the Catholic Church. The hypocrisies were too much for me to tolerate. I'm not into organized religion anymore. But, damn, this gets me closest to the ecstasies that religious people talk about. I can't help but cry bitterly whenever I hear this piece, to think of all that I've done wrong in the world, of my frailties, of my imperfect, wart-filled, dirty humanity. It is the closest I get to God. Which is why I can't be an atheist--this music just draws me back and shatters my secularist certainties. Bach does this consistently now. Agnostic is the best I can do...

The Russian Orthodox Church ideologically supported the Tsar tyranny, helped crack down on the social change movements, instigated "anti-Semitism" and tolerated "pogroms".
Conversely, Stalin's Soviet Communist Party cracked down on religion and purged many religions.
And I also don't expect political forces which oppose Putin's dictatorship.
Because, fundamentally saying, any organization that thrives on this earth is just a phenomenon of "power" that seeks to enslave others.
However, "exceptional souls away from power" momentarily appear in our history.
When I was young, I read the literature on the Russian Narodniks movement.
A thinker named Pyotr Lavrov said, "We have a large liability to Russian serfs."
Many young aristocratic students embraced Lavrov's ethical agitation and abandoned their privileged aristocratic status to join the Narodniks movement.
And in 1874, miraculous ethical passions against the backdrop of self-denial swept Russia.
Only claims with self-denial are barely free from egocentrism.
The claim of the social change movement is "another world is possible!". And "another world" must be unrelated existence to self-centeredness and "logic of power", not to repeat this world. In a sense, "another world" may be an "eternal outside" for humans with egocentricity as an attribute.
Bach's music or Tarkovsky's films suggest a world that transcends human attributes. That is why, their works constantly and fundamentally questions our way of life.
Religious cults, which are nothing more than earthly powers, cannot monopolize Bach or Tarkovsky.

Именно поэтому сочетание Баха и Тарковского вызвало у меня такую реакцию.. для меня это часть пропаганды...человек, разместивший этот контент, осознанно или злонамеренно... он подменяет действительность, занимается моральной дрессурой.... Absolutně nejdokonalejší interpretace této árie jak ze strany orchestru, tempo je zvoleno snad jedině možné, dokonalé frázování....atd, tak ze strany sólistky (dynamika, klid, fráze, výslovnost) vše dokonalé. Díky, díky za opravdový zážitek. Dokázali jste navodit atmosféru a fluidum.

I love Magdalena's voice timbre singing Bach. She has the a purity and lightness of tone akin to a soprano with the deeper range of the mezzo. This must, perhaps, be Bach's greatest aria. For the most perfect rendition listen to Aafe Heynis singing this aria in the 1960s available on TH-cam.

Kozena I think is one of the most remarkable sopranos of our time. In terms of the control required for Baroque pitch and ornament. Whilst brimming with full tone and life.
She's wonderful but is usually classified as a mezzo-soprano.

No, I had not heard that one. It's great! I suppose if one can sing soprano parts one is a soprano, at least for that music. Voice classifications are somewhat fluid. I can sing some tenor parts but I am still a baritone.

Но я крещён, с рожденья во Христе!
Всё это - крест (за что-то дан расплатой).
Судьба за пазуху насыпала горстей,
и сыплет вновь, тем делая горбатей.
Дроблю ногами, будто старый дед,
как старый бык, осунулся понуро,
чья сперма скисла от всей соли лет,
живя с беспутницей, ленивицей и дурой.
Я часто так блуждаю в пору луж,
в сезон жары, цветения и стужи…
Плетусь в жильё, где я - отец и муж,
член их семьи, который ей не нужен...
