I have been detailing steel since 1966. I did the last riveted railroad bridge. This vidoeo says it all. I will use it for my trainees.

Do you think Structural Detailer might be replaced by AI in the future? Structural Detailing are based on mathematical skills and interpretation of spatial relationship, which can be easily done by computer.

When I was in school learning drafting with a pencil and straight edge, someone gave a presentation about what the future would look like for drafters. He said that we would be drawing lines by using a keyboard and the lines would show up on a TV screen (monitor). Then a robot type machine (plotter) would be able to print what we see on the screen. Everyone thought that was the funniest thing they ever heard. Of course no one is laughing now. We just adapted
      .
Yes some jobs were lost. Before CAD it would take a department of 10 drafters 6 months to detail/check a 50-story structure.
Artificial intelligence is a misnomer; the words contradict each other, just like “self-driving cars”. The more enlightened person knows that there is real (human) intelligence in the algorithms. Absolutely nothing can be created by man without real human intelligence. For this reason, I believe the high level tech jobs such as steel detailing not go away. There may be fewer of us but we will simply be using more technically advanced tools.

@@RhysRobinson8822 this is my second year steel detailing. Hitting a rough patch on projects I've been on for the past few months. Is there bright light at end of tunnel? I love the field but the amount of knowledge it takes is overwhelming at times. Feels like it may be above my pay grade. I guess what im getting at is it this a profitable field after experience kicks in? Thanks for your time

@@RhysRobinson8822 my parents with engineering degree switched to detailing job after 1990 starting with AutoCAD and followed by Xsteel after. It was a very well paid job at the beginning and a good detailer still has respect. Unfortunately Trimble makes this software so robust and unhandy so with the latest Tekla release it is impossible to perform the job during same time than with older release. That is a good news for experienced user. :)
