You don’t see too many of these around these days, Mark. When I found my first scuttle mug, I had to do some research just to figure out what it was. :)
Imo the top crescent with holes is merely to keep a lathered brush warm, not much room to work up a proper lather. A puck of soap was likely kept in a separate mug, where the lather was also built. Anyway, I cannot prove that but knowing how folks back in the day kept things simple and dedicated, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! Fun topic. Now I simply must be going, as I resume my continuous search for vintage shave gear.
That seems logical to me, Schon! That's the way I use it. :) One thing I noticed with this new giant scuttle is that because of its size and the thin-walled porcelain it's made of, it doesn't keep the brush as warm as some of the smaller, thicker scuttles I've used. Oh well, it looks great! :) Thanks for watching! and good luck on your search!
Hey Mark! The scuttles are all different sizes, but most will fit a standard Williams 1 3/4 oz size puck. I just measured a few mugs, and it looks like the tops are about 2 1/2" in diameter.
Greetings, Oleg! I spotted the one that looks like a little man when I was on vacation about 200 miles from my house. I didn't buy it but kept thinking about it. Eventually drove all the way back to the antique store to buy it! :)
@@bikestrikesrazors I really understand you) you won't believe I had a similar situation a couple of years ago. we have an ancient city of Suzdal, there is an antique shop there and I saw a beautiful coffee pot there, I refrained and did not buy it, but the very thought gave me no rest, in the end I went back for it and bought it, by the way, it's 250km from Moscow ...)))
@@bikestrikesrazors By the way, you correctly clarified with regard to the Victorian drinking bowl, so as not to stain my mustache, I still see these bowls on ebay and they are sold as Mug without going into the essence of the subject))...
Thanks for the education I had never heard the term or seen any of the mugs. You taught an old dog a new trick!

@@TheDragonshadow1231 Yes, some manufacturers make huge pucks. Joe has a very large, ceramic shaving bowl he can use with soap like that.
A wonderful collection!) I really like these artifacts, beautifully handmade, there is something magical about them,…
