    I managed to keep the GPU at 1700Mhz even after an hour of Watch Dogs 2. Running that frequency at 0.8V and disabling turbo boost is what works best for me. In more CPU-biased games, I would change that of course. But by far most games want more GPU from this XPS 15.
    The other option was GPU at 0.7V, where I managed 1440Mhz stable and didn't disable turbo boost. But even then the GPU would downclock sometimes to 1320Mhz or so. Running on -125 core/cache as any more would be unstable. Disabling turbo boost: -1fps, undervolt/OC GPU: +3/4fps from 40fps baseline

    Hi Jarrod. I have the same xps laptop that you have. And the thermal throttling issue is what brought me here. Playing valorant or FIFA 19 in it is not that bad. Except for those times when for 5 to 7 secs there would be a huge fps drop and than it gets back to normal. However the temperature is concerning since it might reduce my battery life.
    So i decided to get a cooling pad. Since the fans below intake air from outside, i am thinking of getting a cooling pad that gives out air from the above.
    Just wanted to take some advice regarding this. And also some recommendation would be great.
    Also would it be good to undervolt the laptop to prevent those frequent fps drops?
    Thanks. Great video btw.

    Thank you for the video, this reminded me of my situation.
    I have dell xps 15 with i7-8750H and gtx 1050 ti. Gaming on this machine is a nightmare. The GPU thermal throttles at 75 celsius and the whole system is plagued with power limit throttling regardless of how I undervolt or underclock things. Tragic, to be honest. At least there is a fix to power limit throttling, albeit a very clumsy one. The GPU throttling at 75 seems like an impossible thing to fix though.

      @@2009Windows7 That's a monster undervolt. What CPU are you running?.. From my testing, you can undervolt, but the power limit throttling will still kick in after a few seconds/minutes.

  • @lumdermaku
    @lumdermaku 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have seen a lot of other temp results of XPS 15 7590 on load and it looks like you might have a unit with quality control issues. I have mostly seen this model hit around 90-95C (with no undervolt) at 3.5-3.9Ghz instead of you hitting 100C at 3.5Ghz. Maybe the heatsink wasn't mounted properly or it has a bad thermal paste application. At this state even the MSI Prestige 15 performs better than the XPS 15.
    Anyway, great video as usual Jarrod.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll discuss the issues in the review video next week, but basically it uses PWM to adjust brightness so possible eye strain, it's glossy so reflections can be distracting, and burn in is possible long term, however all of these are "maybe" issues. It looks very good, bright, and good colours and contrast otherwise.

  • @hudsoncaceres6820
    @hudsoncaceres6820 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why were the temperatures the same for both the normal stress test and the undervolt stress test?

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because it's still hitting the same throttle limit, however the clock speed is higher with the undervolt. Undervolting may not always remove all causes of throttling, but it will still boost performance if throttling is taking place.

    Hi Jarrod,
    I have a question on my 7590, very similar to yours aside from the RAM and SSD.
    I have a -125mv undervolt on core and cache. Have the GPU running at 0.8V at 1680MHz. Disabled turbo boost (so now 2.6Ghz) in my Throttlestop Game profile to give GPU some headroom. CPU / GPU temps are 76 / 68 after prolonged Watch Dogs 2.
    However, there is a new problem. The CPU throttles for no apparent reason, see screenshot. What could be causing this? CPU and GPU temps are nowhere near throttle temps...
    The CPU is at 20W and less than 80C before it decides to throttle down from 2.6 to 2Ghz and +-15W.
    Running the GPU at 0.7V at 1440MHz makes the CPU throttle less, but it still does sometimes.
    Thanks so much for your help...

      @JarrodsTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Looks like the CPU is running at 15W, that's what I mentioned in the video happened to mine too. After a few mins it dropped down from 30 and settled at 15w, which is honestly quite low and weak for an i7 CPU, even when the temps are fine the Dell BIOS seems to just prefer this to keep it running cool so that the fans don't have to spin up, rather than making it louder they seem to preference making it perform worse, which is one of the reasons I don't recommend it in my full review video (coming out next week with more details).

    • @olivierhacking
      @olivierhacking 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JarrodsTech Yes I did see that 15W preference in your video. Yesterday I noticed it didn't throttle down and stayed at 2.6Ghz, +- 18W, even after an hour of Watch Dogs 2. So it depends on the BIOS' mood of the particular day apparently ;)
      So, for me, it works well for prolonged gaming... thinking of doing a repaste as well. And I am running the optimized fan profile, not even ultra performance.

    • @PaulDario82
      @PaulDario82 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      olivierhacking when it throttles to 15, try removing your Undervolt and/or removing turbo limit and see if it changes the profile. I’ve found what works best is to lower the clock speeds to 3 ish rather than disabling turbo boost.

      You might want to try to under bolt your gpu most the time the CPU share heat pipes I use msi after burner look up a video on it. If that dose not bring down the temps enough you could down load Intel extreme tuneing utility and limit the power to 35 or 25 watts. Last resort would be to take it apart and put new thermal paste or liquid metal on it.

    • @sabcoak846
      @sabcoak846 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@muk6597 I think it will help but it depend on the laptop some its 3c and some 11c but you could have bad thermal transfer from the CPU to the heat sink then a cooling pad would do very little around 1 to 2 celcius. if you can find one cheap you could try it out see how much it helps. The i7 8750h run very hot in most laptops because it's hard to take a lot of heat away from such a small space. The gpu uses more power but it has better thermal transfer because it has more contact with the heat sink. If a cooling pad dose not work as much as you would want there is not a lot you can do. Takeing apart a laptop is very risky if you dont know what you are doing. Could always try the ixtu(Intel extreme tuneing utility) and limit the watts not as good performance but will make your laptop last longer. Good luck with what ever you try :)

    I have the precision 5530 and it s just the same device of xps. Everything is same exept the cpu. Mine one has a zeon processor and I tried every poisbble way to keep it under 80 degrees and no way. if you want booth performans and the no fan noise. İt is imposible. When you disable hyper trheading or turbo boast, it s then becoming a normal laptop can not even play 4k 60hz video without fan noise again. Even there would be lag or freeze on the video when it is fullscreen. So I ask to myself, If I need to make it slower not to make it go extreemly hot, why did not I buy a regular half a price laptop. I know you are telling me that this much amount of problem need formatting and clean fresh installing. but no. Still my device is getting hot like an oven. Somethimes I can not put my hands on it to type something. I also have themal camera pictures. I called the service to solve this thermal issue, nop. They act like they are not facing this problem. But I know all of their unit has the same problem. They have engineering fault on this device. And they are talking about thermal efficiency in their new device advirtisement. Thats why I am posting this same comment to every single dell thermal issue video. I will definitly not buy dell product anymore. No way. Not to my company anymore.
