I just painted a Matchbox XKE with Red Spectraflame with hardener. Followed the 5 coat and 30 min bake. The finish is awesome. The paint was very easy to spray. I keep my Iwata for acrylics, for the Spectraflame I used a $10 Harbor Freight siphon airbrush. The airbrush cleaned easy with lacquer thinner. Very easy paint to work with, and the finish on the XKE is like the original.
Jon, Great tutorial. I will be using an airbrush for the first time to repaint a Hot Wheels Hot Bird. I am eager and a little nervous but worse comes to worse, I strip it and start over.
Question for ya. Do you let the car dry completely before baking? Or how long to wait in between wet-coat to oven? I've also heard that at 200 degrees for 40 minutes is time and temp to use. Pros and cons for both? Finally, Could I do the baking in a toaster oven? Much thanks .
Thanks Jon,great video,I just purchased some goodies from u from Canada we talked on the phone to get my second order that I missed, keep them coming ,take care ,Mark
Awesome video, I wanted to know after the vibrator do you need to zinc coat or primer if you want to paint like normal colors, I don't want any transparent effect from the metal.
Hello, I am looking for the spectraflame paint, I wrote to the email that is on your page but I have not received an answer. Could you help me with information on where I can buy it?
Oh man that is some sweet paint job. I got my Redline Gear for my Green Jet Threat and am so itching to see it get done. I have not got my Airbrush yet so I am still hanging on. QUESTION: I have already prepped the casting nicely but have applied a good coat of white Rustoleum Primer. Will this effect my results with the Airbrush? It seemed to me you did not spray on top of any primer, just bare metal? I still may try a Spectraflame bath. I want to dip the car and get an ultra thick coat on. Will the primer bleed through? Should I even try a bath/dipping of the casting? I wish I could make these magnificent little cars look like yours...
Bullitt, I don’t know if you’ve done anything with your casting yet but I have a recommendation: Spectraflame paints aren’t designed for dipping. They are transparent and rely on the reflective surface below them to produce their unique color effect. I believe The redline shop sells a silver glitter paint that can be used on cars where the zinc surface has been damaged, leaving only Zemac. In your case, it technically could be used to cover up the primer you’ve put down. But, the better choice would be to strip the primer you’ve applied and to apply spectraflame (with hardener) in layers until you’ve reached the color you want. If you don’t have a air gun you can find surprisingly cheap ones at Harbor Freight. They should also have cheap compressors. Good luck!
@@notdonaldst Thank You so much for the wonderful information. My casting has been waiting for a Reply from the "Pro's" so glad it was you that gave it to me brother. I will keep you posted on the results. I knew that primer was going to have to come off, too.... :)
Hi Jon, great tutorials you have here! One question, for the 10 or 20 minutes between coats what do you do with the mixed paint in your air gun? Do you have to empty it each time so the paint doesn't go chunky or set, or is it okay to leave the paint in the gun for an hour or two while you complete the six coats? Thanks - I'm thinking about getting into restoring my redline beaters and your shop will be my one stop!
Hi Blackjack. Thank you for this awesome demonstration and for sharing your skills with us. I plan on custom painting some Hot Wheels and your advice will be well used. By the way beauty paint job in this demonstration. Thank you and keep up the good work!
I was wondering if you have a Hot Wheels 2007 Ford Mustang GT that I could use as a donor car for mine, because The wind shield has a hole in it because my little brother poked in it with a knife.
I have a small 4x4x4 box full of redlines about 10 or so I want to restore by myself. I was wondering if you could do a video or explain how you paint car hoods. Do you do it on the car if so then how? do you take it off and paint separate? do you cover the engine or does that come off with chasis? what about vinyl top painted cars how would one restore it to make it a vinyl top again? thanks! Great Videos. I need the tumbler and right paint and bits and I can finally get started. CAN'T WAIT!
I was wondering if you have ever done a Hot Wheels 2007 Ford Mustang GT, my little brother colored it with a Sharpie. I also have a Hot Wheels 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Leguna Seca, do you have any cars that you could send as a donor car?. This will be the first time I do this, what tips could you give me?
Hey John I have a 1968 Fleetside Red Line, I have the original chassis W/ the Red Line cap wheels & I have a donor chassis W/ bushings on the axles. The latter I think was first released, not 100% sure. Original color is ~antifreeze green~ and I need to repaint it, do you polish the body to get that mirror look under the paint or what? Also I will need to get the glass for it from you, but let's take care of the paint first.
How do you get an enamel paint look? Do you just do spectraflame in darker or thicker coats. I have a Double Header I am doing right now that I am ready to paint. I originally wanted to do ice blue spectraflame but since it was an enamel there are marks on the front so the spectra may not be so great but if I can polish it good enough I might but right now I need help on how to get enamel reproduction paint. Thanks in advance.
This guy is cool
Although I do not collect REDLINES or refurbish ..I must say these VIDEOES are very IMFORMATIVE...GREAT step by step ,great narration!
THANK YOU

Gonna be getting my airbrush for Christmas excited to work on my first casting 👍🏼
Awesome.
Jon You need to come into the 21 Century and make some new videos in HD.
I know, I know, I am trying to find the time. I'll get there.
What size tip works best? Great video! 😎👊

@@redlineshop4681 sweet thanks, I’ll be ordering some once I get a little practice!

Will it still dry properly if you let it sit and don't bake it? Also how long do you let it sit?
If I paint the car outside do I still need a respirator mask?
I would wear one.
Just got my first of many orders of spectra flame love this paint
Awesome, Glad you like it.
After painting a car, does the urethane clearcoat work well over decals?

I own a 2018 Tacoma TRD Sport and I really want to make one suit Hot Wheels. Do you know where I can get 3rd gen Tacoma TRD Sport decals?
Nice holding your breath at the 14:25 mark.
LoL

John...will Spectra Flame paint adhere to a nickel plated casting?
Yes same as zinc. Use hardener so you have a nice acrylic shell.
Thank you.
Awesome video, I wanted to know after the vibrator do you need to zinc coat or primer if you want to paint like normal colors, I don't want any transparent effect from the metal.
You would prime then.
Jon Douglas thank you 💯
....no primer?...
Very Informative, educational, & well done video. Thanks!

This video states 10 parts paint to 1 part hardener. On the paint bottles it reads 5 parts paint to 1 part hardener. ?????????

on the website when you buy to pick 10 paints is the hardener a choice?
Great vid... I'm about to do my first redline resto using spectra.. hope it looks as good as this one!

I noticed that he back fed the airbrush after picking the gun up once between coats. I imagine he left the paint in the gun.
I have this exact same question!
The paint in the airbrush will last 2+ hours.

Is a master airbrush ok? Or would I be better off getting the one from your store? I don’t want something expensive just something to start with
Thank You.
JON
Quick question, why doesn't Mattel use paint hardener? or any other die cast company for that matter..?
Yes we do. Email me at the redlineshop.
I don't know why Mattel does the things that they do. I could never figure them out half the time.
Where can the Hardeners be sold?
Yes
Just starting and learning... thanks for the help!

Time to update to 1080 or 4k widescreen, don'cha think? And you might want to do a voice-over while you airbrush.
Yep, just around the corner.
