My grandparents had a small farm, with 10 or 12 cows. I still remember Grandpa "cutting their toenails" with handtools.
I was about six years old, when I was watching him, he sent me back to the house, saying something along the lines of "not for a kid's eyes." Afterwards he was all in tears, telling Grandma "He had to put her down." At the time, I didn't know what that meant and nobody answered my questions.
Now, 50 years later, I wish I could show him your videos.
But then, maybe he's watching from above.
    Thank you for them.

I know what a bond a dedicated dairy farmer can have with his cows. I feel for your grandfather, bless him. My dad, a construction worker, was hired to pave a driveway at a small dairy farm in a very German settlement in Southern Illinois. As he started to work, up walked a cow who then leisurely lay down in front of him. Dad was a bit taken aback by this. The old farmer just smiled and said, "She's grandma. She goes where she wants." Her milking days were over, and rather than sell her off for slaughter he kept her like a pet. Dad loved animals too, and this story really touched his heart. Bless all those who care for the animals of our world!

@@cathybaldry7822 50 years ago, they didn't have the same knowledge as now. If they didn't know that salicylic acid could be used to treat digital dermatitis, they would never be able to cure a cow with that condition, regardless of how good a trimmer they are.
Consider Gracie, cow 812 which has been featured on this channel many times. She was severely ill. The owner put in a lot of money to heal her. He called veterinarians, he called Graeme. He had a full team working on that cow. That's the kind of care a small herd farmer couldn't afford.
There are many factors that go into a decision like that. Going directly at the skill of the trimmer is a bit nonsensical considering everything else that comes into play.

Instead of a month, weekly or bi-weekly may make the difference. Or if the farmer is able to provide foot baths and isolation from the concrete slurry areas and into an outdoor or straw-lined pen.

Unfortunately, decades later, we have both developed chronic illnesses. We didn't know we had these problems when we began a homestead in northern california and unfortunately our poor health has led to us having to rehome most of our livestock. Watching your videos is bitter sweet because I love to see the bits of Scotland you show, and I loved caring for my animals and I love seeing you give relief to a cow that is in pain. But my heart hurts as I watch because I know I can't ever do this anymore. You are so fortunate to live where you do, and to have the life and skills that you have. Thank you for being kind to animals

I feel that both times now with the clay, this particular cow's dermatitis DIDN'T respond to it at all and just got worse whereas it really seemed to improve the most, though still not completely, to the salicylic acid powder...it dried it up the most. I know it can be a bit discouraging when there a step backwards like this, but as you know not every cow can heal perfectly the first time. Patience my friend, I have full confidence in you & this sweet cow that she will heal up on both hooves soon enough. 🤞👍

I noticed something, when you used the paste the first time to kill the dermatitis, there wasnt that big of a difference for healing, when you used the salicylic acid on the 2nd trim you got a lot of improvement healing wise going to the 3rd trim, then on the 3rd trim you used the paste again and it didnt help, maybe it has something to do with the longevity of the paste vs the salicylic acid?? Heres to hoping we get even more improvement this time!!

The acid is the main ingredient in aspirin. It acts in this case as an extremely powerful antibiotic. It basically kills the spirococal bacteria and enhances healing. The magic paste has less of the acid, but has iodine to dry out the wound. This is a dry wound or so it appears.

An emerging pattern i've noticed, it seems salicylic acid performs best on severe cases of digital dermatitis, paste works best on mild cases. I haven't seen enough of the sprays to know how well they work.
On the previous attempt, you wrapped the foot in paste rather than salicylic acid. Considering the severity of the digital dermatitis, i compelled to think that the farmer requested you to use paste instead. I'm unsure of why the sudden switch occured.

from what i've seen in his videos the spray seems to do the job with dermatitis. correct me if i'm wrong but i *believe* he's said that the spray is hard to get because it's an antibiotic, and you have to be careful about using antibiotics on livestock (plus i think it's expensive). which is why he may not have gone for it for the first trim

@@malusdraco3793 No the spray is just hella expensive, there's another spray that is prescription only, the stuff he's using is basically the OTC version of that, but again it's helllllaaa expensive and used only in the most severe cases, the prescription spray is blue and the OTC stuff he uses is teal/blue-green. Also, i've never really been impressed with that magic mud stuff he uses, like in theory it should be great, but it always seems to do a second rate job compared to regular Salicylic Acid or Copper Sulfate.

You can please some of the cows all of the time, you can please all of the cows some of the time, but you can’t please all of the cows all of the time”
You, Graeme, has a very high pleasing- rate when you work. Focus on that.
Some humans have a hard time to see the good they do, to feel proud of themselves, to pat themselves on the shoulder and appreciate what they have accomplished.
You, Graeme, I think feel the need for others, to tell you that you do a fantastic job on the wellbeing of the worlds cows!
    So here it goes:
You are spending your time around cows and you seek information and knowledge about how to improve yours (and others!) success to make a better life for cows. Good on you!!
You care and you try hard!
Understand how much good you do, do not let yourself down. If not for you, for the cows, they need you❤
As you said, the cow, you and the farmer, even the weather needs to work together to make a cow feet heal, it isn't just you involved. Even the world of virus and bacteria needs to work with you. That ain't easy, dude:)
    Shit happens:/
Let's hope there won't be a mutation in Digital Dermatitis to make it immune to the common cure that works most often today. Evolution sucks in so many ways, especially when we know how it works, mostly, but we are still living WAY over the limit of the earths maximum of everything:/
No solution to solve the issue. Sucks that too.
In my head it all comes down to one major thing in the end:
It should NOT be 500 cows on the same piece of land, nor sheep, people or anything.
This makes the bad stuff flourish (wrong word? Sorry. Swedish here, trying my best🎯). And to go against nature is not easy.
If the animals and people on earth could have the space they need to not evolve and spread so much sickness, that would be great, but we are too many, demand too much food, water and other stuff.
The earth/soil can only provide a certain amount of healthy living for a number of living animals/humans per square mile.
Depressing fact, but humans live over the earths recourses, every second, minute, hour, day, week, months, year, decades....
And Graeme, you are doing your very best to make it work, for your family, others family and the rest of the bunch living on this earth. No one ever said it is going to be easy:)
Hang in there, love your videos, they make me HAPPY💟💦🐾🏡🌞🌟
    You make a difference.
    I love dairy ❤
    Warm greetings,
    H Lj

Have to say your upbeat work ethic and positive attitude is great , I know you have said in other videos as this one we can’t heal them all but keep them comfortable while there . Keep up the great work and don’t let it get you down

I was wondering a similar question: Do you keep your knives into a sterilizing solution while using the grinder? Also, I was wondering if more frequent reapplications of the various treatments (salicylic acid, embryonic paste, & /sprays) would help in the really tough cases? I was glad to see you do double duty at the end here, so maybe my latter question is moot.

Legit question here: This particular, poor girl is gone through so many months of this. It's great that you're treating and managing, but is there a point where you need to take a step back and tell the owner "It's Vet time."?? If so, when is that? I've never seen you address that. I'm now curious.

    • @julietfischer5056

As someone with less experience than probably every single other person here, wasn't the dermatitis on way more flesh in the beginning? Haven't you killed a huge portion of it? Sure there is still some, but isn't it like you building a wall versus 100 brick stealers to now only about a dozen brick stealers?

    • @lotharsoran3604
      @lotharsoran3604 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

That would be the logical outcome, yes. However the bacteria that cause the digital dermatitis are likely burrowed deep into the flesh part of the hoof. They're tricky to get rid of as their cell walls stop them being detected by the cow's immune system. So, even if it is all cut away, it will come back, unless treated properly. Digital dermatitis is also highly infectious, and can be picked up repeatedly off of the floor where other infected cows are walking.
In the worst cases, the hoof goes necrotic (dies), and the solid part of the hoof actually detaches from the flesh area. The holes you see aren't just the source of the wound, they are caused by the bacteria. So, best way to treat it is cutting off the affected areas, application of certain caustic powder that can destroy the cell's boundary that protect them, then when possible let the open air into it, as the cells are killed by oxygen. That, and extra farm hygiene, foot baths at least twice daily, and extra attention paid to hoof cleaning.
Plus, the hoof is growing all the time, like our nails. It grows badly or crookedly into more lesions or ulcers , as it cannot repair the dermatitis. So, Graeme could cut it all away, but without the owners taking extra steps, it is most likely to just come back. But it is notoriously hard to get rid of, and you can do all the right things with your livestock, but it is still a problem.
The way it grows causes more damage, until it is seen to, and the right bits are cut off. But it is just as, if not more likely to grow back wrong again, if the nail bed is damaged.
Add to that, the cow will be walking irregularly, and putting extra pressure on the wrong claw, thus making it worse.

Graeme I've been watching your videos for almost a year now and have seen just about all of them, and I think its the magical paste that's failing you, not your trim and quality of care, or the cows ability to heal. I would bet if you used salicyclic acid after the 1st visit instead of the paste, you'd be where you were thinking you'd be with this old girl. I know I've watched at least a half dozen videos where the paste was used 1st and on the 2nd visit not much improved, and then you used the acid. But this is just some novices observation from watching, I have no knowledge or experience with cows or caring for them.

i agree. i watch other trimmers who exclusively and religiously use chlorhexedine to clean the hoof throughout, but also use salicylic acid straight on and that’s it, and their results are always amazing in short time

He's said many times that on most farms, only a few out of hundreds of cows have hoof problems. He just doesn't show many of those because they're boring compared to the fix-up videos (and, he still wants to help farmers learn how to handle problem hooves). I will also note that most of the cows he shows are dairy cows instead of for beef, so they tend to be older.

You ask your subscribers for their stories. Here is mine. I grew up on a dairy in Valentine, Nebraska. We had Holsteins, beef cattle, horses, pure bred Hampshire hogs, and assorted poultry. I always thought I would grow up to be a veterinarian. Well now I am now a neurosurgical postoperative nurse.
What do I enjoy?-I enjoy seeing the dairies and cattle operations in other countries. Some things are the same no matter where the dairy is located.
What would I like to see?- I have always wanted to visit Scotland. Hearing you, Craig, and others speak is like listening to calm, soothing “music”. I would like to see more of the farmers and those working with the cattle. The scenery is amazingly beautiful.
Questions I have: 1. Does the vibration of the grinder “tickle” the cattle’s feet? 2. You focus on cattle but do you trim goats hooves too? 3. How is your dog feeling? Steve looks healthy and lively.
