I think one of the most incredible things about both her and Sacha's performances is that whenever they were talking privately to each other in "Kazakh", Maria was actually speaking Bulgarian and Sacha was speaking Hebrew. Like, how do you play off of each other so well when you're not even speaking the same language 😂
That was the best part. The first few seconds when she spoke I was like "Wait, I actually understand that!" ... Then it hit me, it's a real language, one I speak with my mum and my mum's side of the family every day. That was so funny because it was unexpected. I thought they'd go the same way with her as with Sacha in speaking a non-Slavic language. I also loved the discrepancies in the subtitles when Tutar spoke.
I love that he speaks Hebrew while playing an anti Semitic character.

God damn, she is a champion. I'm so glad she auditioned for that movie, I was actually blown away by the relationship they portrayed, it somehow elevated a Borat movie into some real drama along with the laughs. They did so fucking good.
Not just an actress, a true hero for exposing a monster, she's a warrior!

When the movie came out, I was so impressed by her performance and there was next to no information about who she was, what kind of work she did previously etc. I'm so happy for her she gets the attention she deserves from this role.
Talk about "overnight success", We all hope to see more of Miss Bakalova.

She clarified that this was her first *international* film... she went to drama school and had worked quite a bit in Bulgaria before being cast in Borat. She's no novice, she's a trained and dedicated actor!

She deserves an Oscar. I think she did more for comedy and reality at a time when it was needed than anything else that was produced.
The way Maria's eyebrows dance along with her emotions is a sensation. I hope she will keep her forehead free from any sort of "treatment" always, because her range of expression is fantastic.

Now I want to watch this movie again. I'm not even a big fan of the Borat movies but thier dynamic in this sequel was literally perfection.
She seems like a really sweet young person. She did awesome in the movie, she seems truly thankful of her rise and of Sasha, and seems pretty deserving of all the props and accolades.

In the movie, I'm fairly certain that Rudy is told that she was 16
Her character is 16. Ghouliani was told she was 16 years old, the old puke.
"Alone with Rudy". That sounds exactly as scary as the book "Alone with the Devil".
Her performance was amazing in that movie. She definitely deserves to win the award.

Before I even saw the movie, I was campaigning for Maria Bakalova to get an Oscar for her performance. Just from watching clips! But then I saw it and felt like she deserved ALL the awards. They should give her best sound editing just because she was that good!! Well deserved Maria!!!
She's literally being talkative and confident and people are commenting that she's shy or nervous? I love how people keep categorizing foreign stars as nervous when they stutter on an American talk show. You realize that English isn't her first language, right? Oh yeah, and foreigners must be so nervous because America is just so great...

I didn't think she was shy or nervous at all. She struck me as really confident and excited, in the sense of enthusiastic.
Hands down deserves an Oscar, she came from no where and then on my monitor watching a random movie. Her performance was so good she stole the show! Sacha must be so happy he found such an amazing side-kick and must be so proud of her! Give this beautiful girl & talented up-coming actress an Oscar!

She's an amazing representation for our country. And we definitely needed some good PR, especially since Vlad Tenev of Robinhood made the worst representation of Bulgaria few months ago.
She exhibited great courage, good comedic timing, and absolutely AMAZING improv skills. She's like the Christoph Waltz of "Inglourious Basterds" -- absolutely essential to the film. I hope her next project can be something safer and something with less gross-out comedy.
Why does Tenev misrepresent or gives a bad image to Bulgaria? He moved to the USA at the age of 5. I can't imagine what's the connection between his home country and his business practices... plus having financial double-standards is the most American thing xD

Brilliant! My own introduction to Sasha Baron Cohen's dramatic role was with Hugo and I had only known him as a comedic actor so it was as shocking to me as it was to watch Hugh Laurie's sudden turnaround as House since I'd only known him as Bertie Wooster and from the Blackadder series.
From one Maria to another, well done. I probably would have broken out in hives from anxiety had I been in her shoes.

Gosh. You can see how uncomfortable she is when the subject of that scene with Guiliani comes up. I imagine either from remembering feeling alarmed or scared, from how much it's been publicized and maybe she braces herself against being seen internationally only through that frame of reference as an actor, both, neither....either way, my heart broke a little when she went from comfort and joy to a contracted posture and forced smile.
