The fact that the Birkie folks put on the race at all this year is inspiring. Huge congratulations and thanks to everyone who made the race possible! To state the obvious, the complete lack of snow is disheartening. We have been in a really bad El Niño cycle this year. Next year should be better, but every year now, winter starts about a month later than it used to.
To add, I did the race, and what was equally inspiring and hopeful is that the trail/snow was almost uniformly good, even for us mid-pack people on the third lap. Yes, there were some hills with a fair amount of ice exposed. But overall it was great, and if they can do it this year, they have to have some confidence for future years.
thanks for the video!... sad to see the Birkie ended up being just a number of laps around the Telemark xc trail system in Cable over strips of man made snow instead of the traditional course heading south through the woods down to finish on main street in Hayward.... but at least they managed to hold a race ! i went to do the Birkie in 2017 and they canceled it even though there was more natural snow still on the ground than what it looks like there this time !
Hey fellow Birkies; well I was there with ya'll on the 24th skiing my heart out on 30k of mostly artificial snow; but what turned out to be a tremendous event nonetheless; NOW..........Mother nature who's laughing and kicking us in the groin is dumping close to 18" of Spring snow in the next few days............damn.........we might have to shift our Birkie races folks ahead in the calendar as these shifts in weather may become the norm in our time..........happy trails...........see you in 2025 😉
10k per lap, I did the open skate on Thursday. The elites did 5 laps, everyone else did 3 laps or 30k. This was in an effort to reduce the amount of skiers on the course at any one time.
Let's wait for at least 2 consecutive years of race-altering warmth before getting too concerned. Outliers happen and for now we can hope this is the case.

It's been an odd winter. No snow there, and very cold and wet in Tampa area for three months. All those cowbells would drive me nuts- possible hearing damage...
