Many people always forget to count the overall amount of Dutch volunteers in the German armed forces. A few Dutchmen, who were living on the borderland near Germany - most of them had German ancestors or sought their livelihood in the German employment -, were able to join the German Heer, as soldiers or Wehrmacht auxiliaries, like many Latvians, Estonians, Ostvölker etc. Others joined the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine as auxiliaries. The fact that two Dutch "divisions" and a regiment were fielded by the W-SS is a measure of the inflated W-SS order of battle. The Dutch soldiers who fought in the battle of Tannenberg were fierce fighters, the fighting there killed over 170,000 Soviets while the Dutch, Estonians, Flems and Jerry SS soldiers only lost just under 10,000

Great video, but you missed an important factor that was brought up in this interview. th-cam.com/video/BemxLdS5szc/w-d-xo.html "Wim" the Dutch SS Veteran mentions the religious component. As you know it is the south of the Netherlands, Flanders, and the Eastern regions all the way to the North Sea that are heavily Catholic in the Netherlands. "Wim" grew up in the Twente and was Catholic and thus the recruiters calling it a crusade against the atheistic bolsheviks made it even more attractive. You know the defense plans of the Netherlands. The Twente was outside of even the first line of resistance, so "Wim" says they felt very much written off by their own government. I would love to know what you think about it.
Hi Michael, thanks for sharing this. It is understandable some joined because of religion but the research I studied didn't mention this. I wonder why. What I can think of is the following: in the Netherlands fascism wasn't intertwined with religion (unlike Belgium for example). This was due to the 'verzuiling' (Pillarization) the Dutch church rejected fascism/nazism. Yet, it could very well be that recruiters used the argument you give to get more volunteers.
You should bookend this with how Dutch men, mainly from the West Indies/ Caribbean/ Suriname and expatriates from the US, Canada, and South Africa, were recruited for the Princess Irene Brigade and other Free Dutch forces during WWII.
I liked this episode, however I was waiting for when you would start talking about how they were recruited, and then the episode was over. I don't feel that you answered the question in the title.
@@HistoryHustle I just thought that since we saw some posters in the opening that you would talk about what methods they used to make people join up. Maybe I was mistaken.
The Dutchman was looked upon by the average German, at least those that lived in Germany. They were treated as outsiders and the Germans would mock them for it. Germans would not buy from there stores and cover there stores with signs. True story.

@@HistoryHustle that's just the official explanation, but I presume reality is different. As you said it's a German map heh(laughs in Großes Deutsches Reich).
I read that Austrian nationalists, such us Otto Bauer wanted to be part of Germany in 1918,after November revolution in Germany in 1918.On October 2, 1918, Count von Wedel informed the Foreign Office that the Austrians, in view of the national disintegration of the Habsburg state, demanded annexation to Germany. They, in his opinion, saw in the Anschluss the last hope and at the same time insisted on a clear German policy on the issue of joining
The information about Mussert being more pro-Dutch than van Tonningen - whom I'd never heard of until watching this upload - is competely new to me. After living 10 years in NL I was always under the impression that Mussert was the bad guy, like Quisling or Petain. I still think he was but I am just surprised that van Tonningen is less notorious. But I guess that van Tonningen too would have been executed, had he not committed suicide, although both the English and Dutch language wiki entries on him mention the possibility of his having being pushed rather than jumped to his death.
@@HistoryHustle I agree that he was a bad guy, I just don't understand why he's more well-known than van Tonningen. Or maybe I just didn't know about van Tonningen.
If I had a choice between working in Germany ,going into hiding, going into the Resistance and going to the Russian Front, the Russian front would definitely be my last choice.
While the video is informative, it does little to explain HOW Dutch men were recruited into the Waffen SS. I had an uncle, now long dead, a very gentle and meek man who had been a baker's apprentice in 1940. He was lured to volunteer by the promise of a Volkswagen. I kid you not. He was told by the recruiters that, once the war was over, all volunteers would be first in line for jobs and receive a Volkswagen for free! My uncle served on the Leningrad front as a machine gunner and survived the war with shrapnel embedded in his back, but he never got a volkswagen, or any car, for that matter. When he fell ill, later in life, he refused any X-rays, for fear the shrapnel in his spine would show up and lead to unwelcome questions. He subsequently died of untreated lung cancer. His children never knew of his past.
Mussert never was anti semetic, and he was a dutch national socialist, wich is a ideology different than german national socialists, there are some books published by the nsb in wich their ideology is explained, the first of them there stood for the dutch facist and national socialist, somewhere after 1940 they decided to make it for the dutch national socialist(they wrote every year a new one) quarter of the funding of the nsb came from the dutch indies where support for the nsb was big,
@@HistoryHustle You have to talk about this man too in the future: nl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johan_Bastiaan_van_Heutsz As an SS-Obersturmbahnnführer he was the highest ranking, and the oldest, Dutch volunteer.
Well, I still cannot figure out if you were playing the devil's advocate, when you said that the average Dutch Waffen SS member joined it in order to travel and explore the world. The globetrotter was part of an entourage that wrought havoc, destroyed cities, towns & villages, murdered populations in cold blood, sought to enslave people, especially in the Soviet Union, just as the other colonialists did across Africa, Asia and the Americas. In fact, Hitler's stated goal of his invasion of the Soviet Union was to enslave its people, and murder those who wouldn't submit, his ideal was the British colonisation of South Asia. And he got these Dutch and other volunteers, who decided to take the joyride with his invading forces. And the Germans, or the English for that matter, did not hate just the Bolsheviks, but they hated the Russia, early on, when he was the Orthodox Christian, toiling under the Tsars, themselves part and parcel from the West European royalty. There is something of a racial hatred the West European feels for the Asiatic Russian.
The previous vid supported the view that innocent young Dutch men only joined the waffen ss to see the world, to have a good time, and when they slaughtered Russians they were only doing their job. The Neurenberg defence. Now we have this vid, informative yes, but almost normalising the concept of Dutch elite nazi waffen ss troops. Hmmm. There's something of the right wing is this channel. We'll keep an eye on this.
Normalizing what ???? He's giving the information "as is", so without telling people how to interpret the facts. I think you're highly underestimating the intelligence of the public.
In my opinion your vids involving Dutch SS volunteers are (somewhat?) politically “colored”. Almost all the facts you mentioned are correct, however there is a odor of sympathy, understanding and silent approval for these volunteers. Simply stating that boredom, lust for adventure, career opertunity and anti communism (come on, in rural Holland politics played no role) where the main factors to enlist is too short. The real question is “what sort of man” did volunteer. Enlisting in the German army, especially the SS was WRONG!. Period! Germany started a war against the Netherlands, thousands have died. Only the bombing of Rotterdam cost almost 900 innocent lives. Several hundreds of resistance man and woman, tortured and killed. Hundreds of civilians shot as reprisal. The 110000+ Jewish Dutch who never returned. Tens of thousend died of starvation. DECENT MAN DID NOT JOIN. Mind you, I do understand the feeling of those poor peasants in for example the province of Drenthe. Neglected by their own government, children walking barefoot, families of 15+, high infant death toll...and there is Germany with its funny Adolf. Work, food, modern, Booming economy, progressive....within 10 years from poverty to a nation where workers could enjoy a vacation. I can understand that out of envy the NSB was very popular. Still, It is a shame that so many viewers of your Chanel (see reactions) seem to glorify these SS volunteers. You provoke/enable this without comment. The picture you display at 11:00 is an example of that. Got nothing to do with historical facts.
@@HistoryHustle thank for your answer and honesty, however be aware of how (and the way in which) you present your info. As you undoubtably have noticed a fair amount of the reactions have been put forward by relatives/decendences or silent admirers of those “brave” Dutch SS men. Maybe a modified form of presentation could work in your favor. Noticed your grandfather used to live in Amsterdam (DamSquare incident). Half of my family too, can listen hours on end to my father of what he experienced as a boy. Especially the last two years removed te innocence out of a 13 year old kid.
@@alfredvonk7686 Thanks for your reply. My goal is to deliver history (as unbiased as possible). That being said, the reason why my episodes about the Dutch volunteers haven't touched on their dark sides, is that these still have to be made. So far I've talked about motivation, recruitment and training. Combat history and crimes will follow. I've noticed these reactions also. Sometimes I wonder whether these people are revisionist or simply fascinated (with a lack of seeing the broader picture). I'm more worried about antisemetic posts under videos about the Shoa. Most of these are already deleted by the platform, but its sad to see so many people comment like this.
Wasn't there a difference between an SS division and the so called Division of the SS, the first ones being very strict on Germanic roots and the latter one having no regulations like that at all.
I don't know what you mean with the name. I guess that one had the totenkopf emblem? Later in the war when they were desperate for men to fill the gaps they changed to need to be aryan. (So more men could join)
Divisions of the SS, were not real SS, but supporting SS troops, most volunteers were divisions of the SS but not real SS. it is best shown in the Muslim SS forces on the Balkan.
Regardless of the how and why ...they still fought under a foreign flag ....the fact is many Dutch believed in fascist and anti Semitic ideals ......it had a lot less to do with being anti communist but more to do with their own beliefs of being aryan .....the Dutch have a weight of guilt ...especially in Eastern Europe .....and their colonial history remains questionable .....and no history teacher On a revisionist quest changes historical facts .....the Dutch and Flemish have hidden behind German invasion ....even though to this day fascist ideology still pervades these duchies ...

Good video btw!

Thank you for your upload. Question, are you wearing a German (SS) jacket? Repro?
Kind regards and keep up the good work
It's a German drill uniform. And Thanks!

How about the Dutchmen recruited in Kriegsmarine (KM)? I saw the Dutch KM flyer on website but lack of information regarding those issue.
Have to research that.
Hell yeah! Actually, Kriegsmarine consist of various foreign personnel during the WW2. Ever seen photograph of KM sailor with Croatian (Hrvatska) badge on his right sleeve. It also a very rare photo, but I haven’t seen any photo documentary of Dutchmen KM in websites. Did many of them survived until the end of the war?
Do you work at a school and wich one? Also great content
Thanks. I teach in Wageningen.

An unforgettable scene.
The Dutch soldiers who fought in the battle of Tannenberg were fierce fighters, the fighting there killed over 170,000 Soviets while the Dutch, Estonians, Flems and Jerry SS soldiers only lost just under 10,000
I believe you mean the Tannenberg Line in Estonia. Tannenberg is located in former East Prussia, now Poland.
@@HistoryHustle That was it I forgot the line
@@oveidasinclair982 Well, the 4. SS-Freiwilligen-Panzer-Grenadier-Division 'Nederland', the Dutch SS division which participated in the battle of Narva - the previous battle - and the battle of the Tannenberg Line, suffered serious damage.
@@FreekZoontjes Yeah they did, look at what they were up against, they were undermanned as were the other units and the Soviets had a tremendous numerical advantage and those Panzer-Grenadier units still prevailed. Jerry SS.....you mean the Britisch Free Corps of 50 volunteers they never fought at Tannenbergstellung ( Estonia ) in september 1944 at the Narwa front
In march 1945 the BFC arrived in Stettin(Pommeren ) under command by Douglas Mardon

G'day from the de Vries family Adelaide Australia
Cheers! And welcome to the channel.

I believe I did. What info was missing you think?
@@HistoryHustle I just thought that since we saw some posters in the opening that you would talk about what methods they used to make people join up. Maybe I was mistaken.
I see. Have you seen the first episode? I also talk about it. Perhaps this will answer the questions you have.
Why does your map say "nordirland" or Northern Ireland about England? Please educate me!
This German map gives the name of the whole country: "England and Northern Ireland". The letters of the latter word ended up over England.
Was the Landwacht also part of Landstorm or was this a Wehrmacht subsidiary?
I believe the latter.
Thanks for taking the time to write down your insights.
2:19 Native Dutch have share the same ancestry with the Germanic
Partially true. Germans and Dutch aren't the same.
@@HistoryHustle But the closest, most compatible.
The Dutch are „purer“ Germanic than the average German. The Germans have a high degree of Slavic heritage especially in the east. Groet uit Keulen.
@@darkdestiny1989 LOL
The Dutchman was looked upon by the average German, at least those that lived in Germany. They were treated as outsiders and the Germans would mock them for it. Germans would not buy from there stores and cover there stores with signs. True story.
I believe that. In the future I will talk about how this was in SS service and that wasn't much of a difference.

Ok
I read that Austrian nationalists, such us Otto Bauer wanted to be part of Germany in 1918,after November revolution in Germany in 1918.On October 2, 1918, Count von Wedel informed the Foreign Office that the Austrians, in view of the national disintegration of the Habsburg state, demanded annexation to Germany. They, in his opinion, saw in the Anschluss the last hope and at the same time insisted on a clear German policy on the issue of joining
I see. I havent Read that much about this so I cannot elaborate on it. But thanks for sharing.
Mussert being pro-Dutch and less antisemitic doesn't make him a good guy or anything. He sure was a fascist and collaborator.
@@HistoryHustle I agree that he was a bad guy, I just don't understand why he's more well-known than van Tonningen. Or maybe I just didn't know about van Tonningen.
I believe he had a higher position. Van Tonningen was never the NSB leader.
@@PB-xe3xx Yeah but to be fair he'd probably have been executed anyway, the same as Mussert was.

If I had a choice between working in Germany ,going into hiding, going into the Resistance and going to the Russian Front, the Russian front would definitely be my last choice.
I agree.

True. Talk about him in the future!
@@HistoryHustle You have to talk about this man too in the future: nl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johan_Bastiaan_van_Heutsz
As an SS-Obersturmbahnnführer he was the highest ranking, and the oldest, Dutch volunteer.
I refer to me previous video on this which is backed by historical research.
@E. R. What an in depth and intelligent comment. I couldn't quite get your point. Could you clarify? rsvp

@@jankoevoet4042 did you watch the previous vid?
@@HistoryHustle so what does stfu mean Mr. Polite?
I do not intend to glorify these men and I distance myself from those who do.

Een dubbele video?
Hoezo?
Wasn't there a difference between an SS division and the so called Division of the SS, the first ones being very strict on Germanic roots and the latter one having no regulations like that at all.
I don't know what you mean with the name. I guess that one had the totenkopf emblem? Later in the war when they were desperate for men to fill the gaps they changed to need to be aryan. (So more men could join)

SS-Freiwilligen Division =Volks Deutschen and Germanic volunteers
Division der SS =East European or others volunteers

Yes, you were. Congrats 🎉
Regardless of the how and why ...they still fought under a foreign flag ....the fact is many Dutch believed in
fascist and anti Semitic ideals ......it had a lot less to do with being anti communist but more to do with their own beliefs of being aryan .....the Dutch have a weight of guilt ...especially in Eastern Europe .....and their colonial history remains questionable .....and no history teacher On a revisionist quest changes historical facts .....the Dutch and Flemish have hidden behind German invasion ....even though to this day fascist ideology still pervades these duchies ...
