  • With World Whisky Day right around the corner, we thought we would branch out of our country and try some Irish Whiskey in the Bourbon-Drinkers friendly Redbreast 12 Year Cask Strength. It's made from a combination of malted and unmalted barely and comes in at 115.2 proof.

I will always have a bottle of this on my whiskey bar. That said...........just one correction.
12yrRBCS is not a finished whiskey. It is completely matured in both ex bourbon and sherry casks the entire 12 yrs.
Anyways, have a great weekend you two.

Redbreast 12yr CS is definitely a great intro to Irish whiskey for those who love the high proof, but the regular 12yr 80 proof is more of your quintessential Irish whiskey without the sharp metallic bite you get from other Irish whiskeys. All that being said, as Beam nutty lovers (Bookers), I'd highly recommend the Redbreast 15yr. It's by far my favorite of the 12, 12CS, 15, Lustau, and even 21. Love your whiskey content. Keep it up Chad and Sarah!

Yes, this is my first time here but Bourbon isn't my Go-To whisky. I have this Redbreast in my collection and enjoyed it too. I have a few other Irish but most of my stock is Scotch. With this Redbreast, I found lots of evolving tastes and smells as is and when you add small varying amounts of water. Also when you go back to that bottle after a few weeks now that some air has gotten into it, you'll see other sensations coming out of it. Very interesting whiskey.

Drank along with you guys, I’m also trying the CS for the first time. I love RB 12 80 proof and this CS didn’t disappoint.

Finally.... Irish are my favorite followed by some Scotch. Redbreast Cask truly is Lovely. My favorite of all time is Yellow Spot. Maybe for 601. I think you have to take into account Import taxes when it comes to Irish Whiskey. Ireland taxes quite a cut on that particular export.

I have been a bourbon drinker for a long time and recently gave this a try because of all the good press. It was a delicious whiskey and I really enjoyed it, but afterwards I just wanted to buy a bottle of bourbon (I only keep two bottles at once). It was really good, but didn't satisfy what I like so much when it comes to bourbon or rye.

Single pot still Irish whiskey is my favorite. I always keep Redbreast 12 cask strength and Redbreast 21 as well as Green Spot, Yellow Spot, and Red Spot on hands at all times. I love the more flavorful fruit, spicy, and creamy/oily profile.

I love bourbon and the glencairn but my all time favorite is redbreast with the copita . Lol Mint, lemon, citrus A nice alternative to bourbon. Bourbon, scotch and Irish whiskEy ! They all have room on my bar. Redbreast gets the nod in my book as number 1

Redbreast 12 CS is a perfect choice for y'all -- I think it's particularly accessible for bourbon drinkers. I agree with Sara that the sherry is properly integrated as a supporting actor, not trying to steal the spotlight. I actually drink about as much Scotch as bourbon, so I get exposed to sherry very often -- but I still prefer when it is not the dominant flavor.

glad you two liked this one - this is probably my favorite Irish Whiskey - and the B1/20 you had (based on proof, and every batch is maybe has a 10% difference) is pretty good overall. If you want to try another Irish Whiskey, I'd recommend Yellow Spot - though it is lower proof, so it may not be to your liking. If you can find Blue Spot - try that instead (I've had zero luck finding it, but it is well reviewed). If you ever venture out to Scotch Whiskies - a good starting point would be Lagavulin Distillers Edition. Cheers!

The fact that it’s “bourbon night” makes this type of content much more interesting. It is pretty evident in your descriptions; you are using bourbon adjectives to describe an Irish whiskey, which I think is amazing. I would LOVE to watch an Islay (i.e. Laphroaig, Ardbeg, idk) tasting, I want to see you reactions.

Glad to see this video. I'm taking a bottle of this to a whiskey tasting next week. I've had % enjoyed the standard 12 yr and the Laustau edition, really looking forward to trying the cask strength. Irish is very different from bourbon due to the triple distilling and used barrels not to mention the different mash bill but plenty to enjoy. Paid $93.

15 year is probably my favorite. I like 21 year a lot as well, but for the price it is a rare treat. If you can go to Ireland they can be bought for roughly 1/2 the price of what they cost in the states, depending on the exchange rate.

Love y'all! Red Breast Cask Strength is the bourbon lover's gateway to other whiskeys. It has some grain, so it is a little more bourbon-like in flavor, and the cask strength is a big plus. I relegate Irish mostly to St. Patrick's Day, which is too bad, because great Irish deserves more focus. If you get a chance, check out the Blue Spot, which is another cask strength, and even more bourbon-y. Hard to find right now and I imagine even more difficult in KY, but if you ask real nice, I might send y'all a sample.

As a bourbon drinker it is hard for me to justify the price tag on an Irish whiskey since I am never sure if I am going to love it or just find it okay. At that price point, I think I would rather experiment with the Jameson Caskmates or the Tullamore Dews that are finished with different casks.

Sarah, a lot of sherry finishes and maturation do give rise to a sulfur compound smell. I have never gotten it from Red Breast, but if you are turned off by that note I would recommend staying away from Macallan, as I get that sulfur note on a lot of their bottlings.

You're not that far off, guys. For Irish Whiskey, it's a really good price, considering it's twelve years old and cask strength. Not a lot of Irish Whiskey's out there that do this. Example: Green Spot is $75 and it's NAS and only 40%. Yellow Spot is 12 years old at 46% and it's over $100.
