  • @koolpep
    @koolpep 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    Nearly 4 years later and the entire FiftySix line (and especially the self-winding) continues to sell well - I love mine. The date window is actually very well executed. The center of the digits is evaluated for each date individually - if you look at the movement shot you see what I mean - the 11 is pushed more to the righ vs 10 and vs 12 so that it looks perfectly centered in the date window aligning perfectly centered with the minute railroad track on the dial. I also like that the font on the date wheel is the exact same of the numerals. That kind of attention to detail is just wonderful. I see the date window as "integrated" rather than pushed out of the way. I love they even put a marker next to it. It's just a complete package and I love wearing that watch.

    Hello Christian, I think you completely miss the point. This collection is meant to bring a new and younger audience to the brand and it is. The watches were well received at SIHH. Now the Fiftysix selfwinding in steel is the only one that doesn’t use the Geneva hallmark, but it does use the Cartier MC movement with the Vacheron finishing and a hand finished rotor. As for the dial, it’s actually has hand applied white gold markers and hands. The dial is a beautiful two tone sector style dial. The case is conservative, but has mass market appeal. Pricing is great starting at $11,800 and I’m sure there will be discounts to be had making this very attractive. Personally for me this is a great proposition and I’m definitely on board.

    • @TheoandHarris
      @TheoandHarris  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey man! I totally get the point. But I think part of being one of the 3 most prestigious manufacturers in the worlds also comes along with being able to make no concessions. Me to VC: "wanna be a big shot? Dare be a member of the holy trinity? Then get ready to be help to an incredibly high, uncompromising standard. Because that's part of the deal"

    • @DrWatch-fq3tf
      @DrWatch-fq3tf 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theo and Harris I completely agree with what you’re saying, however that doesn’t keep the doors open and the lights on especially when your competition is Patek and AP. Also remember VC hasn’t always used the Geneva hallmark on every watch all the time. So this is nothing new. Think about how many people this will bring to the brand.

    • @TheoandHarris
      @TheoandHarris  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree with you!!! Instead of trying to steal customers from patek and AP etc, they're trying to create new ones. And thats a great idea!!

    • @ryandoppelganger665
      @ryandoppelganger665 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the point was missed in this video. VC hasn't always used Geneva hallmark movements. I also don't think that charging a high price is mandatory to be in the top 3, especially because a brand is trying to spark interest and 11k for a watch is not necessarily accessible. If you look at their history they have always offered a range and were in the Trinity due to achievements not price tag. Also, recommend seeing these watches in person.

    • @Ahmadb000
      @Ahmadb000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IMO, VC did a good job in a time where PP is now increasing 20% of steel Nautilus watches. The esthetics of their new 65 watches are great when you see the actual watch instead of the pictures. Was always want to get a Complete Calendar Complication from a renowned holy trinity brand with a reasonable $23K.

  • @misterfreeze6545
    @misterfreeze6545 5 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    I find most of the points made in the review to actually be quite the opposite. While some may reject VC's new Fifty-Six, I think it will be rewarded by the Market Place over the long run.
    1) A Boring watch? Everything about it is actually a very different watch for VC. The watch is very interesting and has a lot of personality.
    2.) Vintage styling is wrong? While it may be different than VC's plain styles, it has a conservative, familiar look to it, that one would expect of a watch in this class. I find it to be in the same vein as a Patek Calatrava, and it should also hold up well over time.
    3) Movement is "in house" to the Group, but not proprietary to VC? Somewhat against the trend, but shouldn't really be an issue. While it is sourced from Cartier, and finished at VC, this is what AP, PP and VC have been doing with sourced movements from JLC, Frederique Piguet, and Lemania on high-end models for many years.
    4 ) Movement doesn't have a Geneva seal? Well, neither do many fine brands, including PP and AP. Quality standards are evolving and the Geneva Seal is not as important as it once was.
    5) Case is stainless Steel? Yes, but it is still available in Gold, if it makes you feel better to pay more. But, steel has been offered in far more high end brands for decades, and is no longer really anything to criticize. Royal Oak, Nautilaus, VS Overseas all offer SS at much higher prices.
    6) Price is too low for the Brand and type of watch? You could just as easily argue that similar brands and watches' prices have escalated out of control and are now too high! This watch is almost twice the price of the closest thing at Richemont, the Jaeger Lecoultre Master Control, so it's not exactly bargain pricing. In any case, most people would consider anything over $10K to be ultra luxury pricing. At $12K in steel, the fifty-six in 18K gold is a 50% premium at $19K, as to be expected. So the pricing seems to fit within the ultra luxury range.

    Vacheron has been out-hustling everyone short of Lange in the past few years when it comes to innovative, high-end watches, and they still aren't the byword for luxury that Patek and AP have become. If AP can be the talk of the music industry for selling a $21,000 steel time-only watch, Vacheron can put their Traditionelle movements in spruced up Seiko cases and make their way back into the public consciousness.
    The FiftySix triple calendar almost competes with the Patek 5205, stylistically, and it's a much stronger design to contest Patek on than the overcrowded steel sports watch category.

    Sometimes i find these rants are the episodes i turn off. Personal bias can go a long way my friend, and these watches were incredibly well recieved at SIHH. This line is an answer to a need for more accessible price points from the holy trinity. This means some sacrifices for fit and finishing along the way. The same design cues you bash on this watch, you have praised on others (attempting a modern take on vintage, etc) and I think you should save the "hard" opinions for watches you've at least seen in the metal. Thank you for the content regardless! Still a big fan.

    Of course, you are entitled to your opinion however I firmly and respectfully could not disagree any more with what you have said. It's a GREAT watch and a greaet move by VC.
    As a lover of horology to be able to attain a watch from the holy trinity is an honour. Most would never otherwise consider buying this watch.
    The reality is most people that don't give a damn about movements, top finishes and heritage won't really buy this anyway (and that's 90 percent of the watch buyers that make a bit of money and buy a Rolex) Therefore whoever purchases this likely knows watches and respects VC. The idea that lower price (lets be fair, over 10k still lol) would somehow mess with VC's reputation is absurd.
    As for looks; looks amazing. The finish is amazing.
    Great move all around.
    Will definitely consider buying one.

    I think they are going the right way! Nearly 50% of the american market is ruled by the crown and there is no holy trinity watch that was even near the price of a standard Rolex. The cheapest vc‘s patrimony or overseas are at about 15000 Euros at the moment and if I think about Rolex you can start at the same amount of money for the cellini if you want to go classic. And when the 1956 is at about 10-11000 euros it’s the more ,,horological“ respected choice, can’t go wrong with that. They have to get some more pieces of the cake to stay in a safe position. Letting Rolex rule the market and not responding could be a big mistake for vc and even every other brand

However you completely missed the fact that the cheapest model, the automatic with date, uses a Cartier movement and is NOT their usual in-house automatic, and is NOT a geneva seal movement. Geneva seal and VC usually go hand-in-hand, so it's a mistake to offer a model that isn't up to geneva seal quality imo. (The triple cal and day/date/pr all use VC's in-house geneva seal movements)

    You are both correct and wrong in my view. VC needs to be very careful making cheaper watches, but at the same time, they are fishing for new clients in, in my view. as you said yourself, they are bridging the gap between 10,000 and 20,000 USD + segment. I myself, currently in the approx 10,000 USD watch price segment would rather by a 12-13,000 USD VC then have to jump to 20-30,000 USD +. Ease in......I think VC could ave pulled off a brilliant move here. Lure us into the brand with a 12-13,000 USD watch, knowing we will take the leap to the "normal" paced VC watches a few years later......I am sold.......

    I think in a vacuum this is a nice entry into the Holy Trinity. Whee it falls apart for me is when you look at Lange, for $3000 more you get a watch that is arguably better finished, and in solid gold. While it is a nice watch, I feel if I was looking at a Holy Trinity tier watch, I would want the classic elements that the trinity is known for such as precious metal cases.

Honestly I find Rolex pretty bland and boring, and certainly not worth the price. I've narrowed it to JLC, Omega (Aqua Terra or Railmaster), and VC. Wear what works best for you. If someones budget is £11k - can they really find a rolex/AP/Patek... not really.
    Fifty six allows someone aspirational to buy into the brand and then work their way upwards.
    Most of the top 3 watch brands are unattainable in terms of price for most people. Geeks like us can keep gushing all we want but to pay for these watches out of paychecks can be a hard deal. I see fifty six as a chance to own a piece of history at not so cheap price. I honestly laugh when people say £11k is entry level and doesnt offer much.
    A gold manual wound Cartier Louis retails nearly for £10k and people go GA GA over it.
    Best to buy watches one loves. Till today there has not been a perfect watch and there never will be.
    Keep up good work. Always great to see new perspective.

    Great Topic! I believe VC made this move because they are not competing well with AP and Patek, whether it's selling of watches to marketing...or perhaps, like you said, they want to offer a watch to cater to another clientele. Usually when a manufacture does this they cut corners (e.g., metal, components, quality). What I'm struggling with is this line better than a lower priced line, such as the JLC - Master Control models for half the price. I'm inclined to say no. Cheers, Mike K

    Not a big fan of the sixty five but damn that fifty six is delicious. Non sure I've seen any pieces from 'addamar pickkay' l will have to check them out. Just a heads up they aren't designed to speak loudly. Do a little history on vacheron. Not one of your better videos.

    Agree that there’s avoid to fill between Rolex and the Trinity. But there are better alternatives. The obvious one is JLC. Or a used Overseas.
    And yes also Polo S and Laureato: Both have in-house movements.. one can argue the design and aesthetics but you can get them on the grey market with good discounts so the value prop is there.

    today I wore a Nivada Grenchen Antarctic Chronometer.
    A 60 year old gem of a watch with mint dial and solid gold logo on the case back . Found it at a pawn shop for 50.00 . Why do people spend crazy money on these over priced trinkets ? A good ETA movement will last a few lifetimes .

    I think the entry level 56 is the main offender here. The fact that there is such a difference in the movement compared to the other models is embarrassing. Yes it’s relatively cheap (in steel), but what I’m saying is that they either shouldn’t sell it to begin with, or to bump up the movement and the price accordingly.

    The Holy Trinity is just pure nonsense.
    When you compare what the likes of JLC does it makes no sense at all. Are people meaning that price is the deciding factor in the trinity or do they mean quality.

      A solid gold Master control will be not far of the price of a Patek Calatrava. And will be built to a very high end standard.
      The Holy Trinity of watches is nonsense.

    • @dlhussain81
      @dlhussain81 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      bighand69 you clearly have not been able to compare JLC against AP/PP/VC. The difference in cost of these watches is due to the finishing of the movements. There’s a reason the JLC is much cheaper, it’s machine finished whilst the ‘trinity’ are finished to a higher level and by hand.

Maybe u need to hold it in yr hands to really see the real value of it.....dont be so negative, its a vintage classic look overall.... ;)

    VC has built stainless steel cased 3 handers as 'basic' watches for decades. If you were actually a watch person and not an influencer, you'd know all about how the FiftySix is the modern 7592. Although I bet if Patek brought back the stainless steel Ref. 96 you and every other social influencer would cash every check you get to talk about how awesome it is. Boring? VC must not pay.

    For much cheaper you could by a Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Quantieme, that has a much nicer look! Specially, as the time and date Vacheron does not have an in-house caliber, it uses a JLC movement.

    I think it's an introduction to VC (an introduction peice and price goes hand in hand with the reputation of this brand ) . It is not perfect , and i do agree a 6 date window would have been better but attracting younger buyer is important for their future and survivability. Trinity watches are not affordable and for a price conscious buyer ,every dollar counts . That being said , not all watches are perfect (depending on individual taste ) . I do not like AP (never did) , and i would get an Lang over a Patek (but thats just me). I find the VC simple and clean (too clean (even with complications) for the higher 2 models of the trio), what i do not understand is the reviews (looks not price) on the master control date sector dial and th VC 56 date are on opposite ends of the spectrum while i do think they look similar (cleaner finish for the VC ) , i like them both (except for the date window) . How can 2 similar watches get opposite reviews on looks ?

    I watch all of your episodes, but never comment. My compliments for your achievement, your service to the industry, and your sense of taste and style.
    My personal opinion on VC is this;
    Vacheron is committing suicide. They've been doing it by inches over the last decade.
    Vacheron has lost its sense of self identity. This is my message to Vacheron.
    You are the oldest and most tradional in the Trinity. Do what you do best. Your Overseas will never beat the Oak on design or the NMautilus in cache. Your 56 is a JLC master control, "warmed over". You don't Need a transitional watch.
    Your brand identity should be Expensive, Exclusive, Old World Unattainable. Expand the Historiques collection. Do more with ultrathin. Go after the Finissimo. Do more jewels, tourbillons, equations of time, etc... Bring back pocket watches, thin and both simple and complications. Only precious metals. Do it or die. PS. Don't let Richemont throw you under the bus for Lange.
