Grant's political enemies in the army tried to tarnish him by telling Lincoln that his General drank too much. Lincoln's reply was paraphrased as, If this is what motivates Grant then send him a keg.
Thomas Jefferson didn't just drink any old red wine, he was a big aficionado of Madeira wine. The brandy-fortified Portuguese wine ages very well, and long shipping times along with heat and the rocking motion of a ship actually improved its flavors, making it a popular import in early America. Madeira wine was the most popular wine throughout the British Empire at the time and the American colonies drank a quarter of the world’s production. George Washington enjoyed several glasses with dinner each evening, the Continental Congress celebrated the signing of the Declaration of Independence with it, and Thomas Jefferson ordered the equivalent of 3,500 bottles during his first three years in the White House. Jefferson developed a lifelong love of Madeira wine from George Wythe, his law tutor at William and Mary.
When you think about how much Jefferson drank it's kind of amazing he was able to do much of anything. According to his journals the first thing he did when he woke up in the morning was drink a quart of hard cider.

Durning the US Civil War, the South was beating the North in many battles but out west, Ulysses S Grant was turning the tide. When people came to Lincoln about Grant's excessive whiskey drinking, Lincoln replied: “Tell me what brand of whiskey that Grant drinks. I would like to send a barrel of it to my other generals.”
Reworded of course, Irving Berlin celebrated General Grant by quoting that line in his song about Abraham Lincoln: "Abraham," written for "Holiday Inn."
Grant's whiskey drinking is very well known. I was amazed when his favorite drink was champagne.... Then a little saddened when no one seemed to know who he was.
The Grant thing is a bit misleading. His actual favorite drink was Old Crow whiskey, which he drank constantly, to the point of near constant intoxication. He only later switched to Champagne because he thought he would be better served being less drunk as President. Probably a good move lol
It would seem to be a good choice, although, given his cabinet's rather loose adherence to silly things like laws and integrity, it didn't quite work out.
@@dbsagacious so which is it then? did he switch for health reasons, or because he became president. Also, he might have drunk whiskey before, but favoured champagne when he was president, so yeah, that does make champagne his favoured drink.
Interesting tid-bit about the American Civil War and General Grant (later US President) . Grant was known to tip the bottle quite heavily (I am surprised his favorite beverage was not a Kentucky bourbon however). He was having un-matched success on the battlefield but some complained he was always half drunk. Abe Lincoln heard about this and replied..."Well maybe he is, but whatever he is drinking please be sure to send all my other generals a case so that they can match the success of Grant". Also, Grant and General William T. Sherman were good friends,. Grant known for his drinking reputation and Sherman for being a mental case but also successful commander. Grant was asked about Shermans friendship and his mentally un-stable aggressiveness. Grant replied...."Sherman always stood by me when I was drunk, and I always stood by him when he was crazy."
Although it should also be noted that Sherman's reputation for being mentally unstable was greatly exaggerated by Southerners upset at how soundly and cleanly he trounced them in his famous March to the Sea. Same with the persistent myth that he burned downs towns, and even cities like Atlanta, as he went. In reality nearly all of those fires were started by the Confederates themselves as they were fleeing Sherman's advance, trying to slow his force down. It didn't work, because while the extent of Sherman's red hot single-minded aggression is massively _exaggerated_ , it's not entirely made up.

0:23 Lolsy and Justine are both the Presidents of áilleacht and tallann🍀 Greetings from Mount Juliet, Tennessee USA
11:40 "I'll give you a hint, it was the eighteenth president."
"Of course! Jimmy Neutron!"
The way Justine was taken aback by how “scrumptious” 😉the (Thomas Jefferson) wine was took me out. 😂😂😂😂😂
So much fun with these pairings! Well done on the research Dermot
Justine & Lolsy's faces 7:58 !! Dermot's reaction to the diet coke as well. LOL
I REALLY wanna know what Justine was thinking in this moment!
Yep Jefferson also grew grapes at Monticello his home in Virginia and too small of a sample...so true
It's like someone pissed in your pint. Love it, Justine, you couldn't have said it better. I would have loved to have seen this when it first came out.
Dermot's knowledge of US history is the surprise in this video! Well done, sir!
"Ulysses S. Grant! That bearded f***!"
Thanks Dermot, I just spewed my drink all over my screen. Also, really impressed with your presidential knowledge. Fair play sir and definitely make this a series.
I thoroughly enjoy the fact that the first three were literally the first, second, and third presidents, in order.
I’m a simple man. I see Justine, I click
Justine and wine…. Surprised but somehow not surprised 😂
Funny, first time I heard of Porter was in the movie "The Quiet Man" which, of course, took place in Ireland.
I love how paddy had to check his heart after the bottle popped
I thought he was checking for a bullet wound.
@@michaelhoward142 nice
That's the best ever change of facial expression I have seen in a long time from Justine @ 07:50 - 07:57 😂
I need more Lolsy in my life...I mean my Try channel. Another great video and I hope this becomes a series of US president drinks.
Justine's reactions are Gold, waiting on her spinoff channel Drinking with Justine
7:50 that pause in the music and her delivery on her response had me wheezing 😂😂😂😂
Fun video! I agree with Dermott, make it a series.
I'm sure Grant enjoyed a bit of Champagne as well, but he was a well-known fan/problematic drinker of bourbon.
Grant being an alcoholic is untrue. He, however, had almost no tolerance. He was a serious lightweight/cheap drunk.
I thought he liked whiskey?
@@jasonhenninger8220 If Grant drank as much and as regularly as they say he did, wouldn't he automatically build up a tolerance, and then be able to drink more?
@@jasonhenninger8220 Um... local history says otherwise. When he was station at Fort Humboldt, California (about 300 yards from where I sit) he was a light drinker. After a long, rainy, cloudy, depressing winter here, he was most definitely an alcoholic when he left. He wrote in his journal "You have no idea how forsaken I feel here"....
@@Willow76ny All bourbon is whiskey but not all whiskey is bourbon my friend
What an amiable crew today - the new ladies fit in just great, the "old" ones are as charming as ever, and the guys are steadfastly supportive. Well done all, and slainte!
10:19 Dermot's Bill Clinton impression absolutely killed me 😂😂😂
Undoubtedly it needs to be a series!!!!
“After a few of these you would start a revolution, wouldn’t ya?” 🤣
Justine is epic in this video. I always loved Losley's expressions, but Justine is killing it.
When F.D.R. would go down to Warm Springs , Georgia to relax , he was said to visit the local moonshiner to make a purchase .
10:20 That Bill Clinton Impersonation was amazing! The voice and the facial expression were perfect
There is a brewery in Philadelphia called Yards that makes a porter based on a Washington recipe. They also do a golden ale from a Jefferson recipe and a spruce tip ale from Benjamin Franklin (not a president obviously).
Dermot hit it right on the head! Let'em try each President's favorite drink.
Saifa aka drunkencookie has been such an underrated addition to the crew!
This is my 1st time seeing her but I'd definitely like to see her more
We had a president named Ulysses, and the studio full of Irish people didn't make a single James Joyce reference?
You can mix a few drops of currant juice in your Snakebite, marvelous ❤️ Drink it every time I go into a irish pub in Germany, now I'm puzzled, wasnt it irish?
Might well be, in the UK you can definitely order snakebite, cider and black or Guinness and black
(black=blackcurrant)
I second Dermot, this should be a series, because I would like to know what beer Barak drinks, and what Lincoln's , FDR's and Teddy's favorite drink was, and, what the heck, Martin Van Buren and Garfield.
Love Justine and Lolsy a great pairing
Yess!! Make this a series!! ❤️
"I'm lucky if I can get someone to make me a cup of tea..."
Idk why but that mad me laugh a lot.
This channel is simply fun and a great time! Love it!!!
I think an Old Fashioned would’ve been called a New-Fangled back then, tbh…
Lmao
So funny that all of them talk about the hard cider being a summery drink when it’s actually a fall thing here lmao.
I will allow that an ice cold hard pear cider is lovely on a hot summer day.
omg, exploding champagne! Paddy's face as he clutched his chest! 🤣🤣
"he was unproblematic, did his job."
😅😅😅😅😂😂😂😂😭😭😭😭😭
Ah Geez what the FK LOL I couldn't stop laughing.
Really enjoyed this🙂🙂🙂
Trying all the alcoholic drinks, wines, ciders, cocktails etc should become a series.
Justine is so adorable I would go to Ireland just to have a drink with her
Justine is a Doll!
