actually its a spartan tradition that if a spartan knows he or she is going to die they drop the helmet, the only ones who didnt where kat (shot to the head) and emile (over run by ZELOT elites) they never got the chance to lose it before they died but to drop the helmet is saying "let my memory live on" because of the helmets black box effect, the nural uplink in the back of the skull shows the suit when the wearer is dead so it loops back his final actions..quite sad really.

If you read Halo: Evolutions, you would know that planets that get glassed would still be barren 30 years afterwards.
