The Maze Runners... the romance in that series was very weird and definitely unnecessary.

I honestly think Children of Blood and Bone would have been better without that forced romance between Zelié and (blank). It was so unbelievable and unrealistic it hurt. I think I'm in the minority here though. If she really wanted a romance, I think she should've just put A and T together.... and let it be a slow burning romance.

I totally agree that the YA genre is oversaturated with pointless romances. I think the worst is when a book that is advertised as a Historical or a Fantasy or whatever it may be ends up just being a romance. I love a good romantic subplot, but when it starts to overtake the main plot of the book, that's when I start to get frustrated. I also 100% agree with the commentary on Scythe! Love love love that book, but the romance is pretty tacked on. Love your commentary!

I feel like a lot of books, especially ya, just add a romance in there just to have it. And like I don't get it? Why not just have a strong friendship? Why does everyone have to end up with someone and when they do why is it always one of the main characters?? Its not realistic and it automatically irritates me at this point just cause I'm so tired of it.

This might be a bit of a controversial one .... The Hunger Games. ( Fake it for the broadcasts, okay. ) BUT I DO NOT THINK PEETA AND KATNISS EVEN HAD CHEMISTRY TOGETHER. It didn't need it. Becoming best friends and really growing close, yeah, that would have worked and they could have still had the same ending, but uuuugggghhhhh the romance in those books really grinds my gears!

Definitely Harry and Ginny. Their relationship seemed like an attempt to recreate Lily and James. I find it very unrealistic when several couples in a teenage friend group stay together into adulthood. It worked for Ron and Hermione, but I don't feel that Harry and Ginny had that amazing chemistry.

Don't hate me but Harry Potter never needed any romance. Like maybe just one couple would've been fine to have on the side but the way they all coupled up was kinda unnecessary 🤷‍♀️Plus, the romances always felt underdeveloped and such a sub-sub-sub-plot that I haven't met anyone that actually cares about them (pretty sure there's more people who ship Draco and Harry than those who ship Ginny and Harry which is saying something). HP is amazing and driven with such a forceful plot without needing that kind of stuff.

I’d haunt my boyfriend and best friend if that happened.

I feel this way about 80% of YA books! Why do we keep spreading this message that once you get a boyfriend/girlfriend, your problems are solved? I bought the Sky is Everywhere, which reminded me a lot of the last book you talked about. It was supposed to be about grieving the loss of a sister, but mostly was about whether she should keep hooking up with her dead sister's boyfriend. Like, why??!

YES @ Scythe. Like, I don't understand why the romance was even there. It sort of felt like the two leads were forced together like "SEE THEY'RE CONNECTED AND IT'S L O V E." But it's like... there are multiple kinds of love and I only ever got the friendship between them. Never the romance.

There aren’t a ton of books that I thought could have done without romance (bc I’m such a hopeless romantic) but there are some romantic subplots in books that I either don’t care about or think could have at least been done better. I think The Hunger Games was a big one, where the romance was important to the plot, at least Peeta’s was at the beginning, but the love triangle with Gale was predictable and just made me think “We really don’t have time for this! There’s a government to take down!”

I personally think that the main romance in the Grisha trilogy was so unnecessary and pretty meh 💁

One of the reasons I hate divergent (don't be triggered) is because it's more a love story in midst of a corrupt government then it is a strong lead character fighting for freedom. It was like everything 3 seconds someone would say "oh Tris you're so strong and powerful" and 2 seconds later she'd go crying to Four. I think it should have been done more the way it was in hunger gamed. Where love was the peaceful finale pushed to the side not a fiery passionate affair that overtakes the book

I feel like it’s a pretty unpopular opinion, but I wasn’t a fan of the romance in They Both Die At the End. The book overall is great, but the romance really threw me for a loop and I didn’t feel like it added anything to the story, especially not anything I would’ve missed otherwise.

I don't have a book but in Avatar the last airbender, the main character aang and katara end up together and I don't like it that much. They hinted at the romance throughout the series but Katara has this big sister/mother figure kind of feeling and is often the voice of reason in the show. Aang is very childish and stuff so I always saw them as siblings and not as a couple
