Hi friends! I just wanna make a few extra lil notes:
    1. In regards to my feelings on MADE YOU UP, I included some details in the video that may come off as fact, but I believe they are personal opinions/speculation from reviews I've seen after double checking with evidence (which I should have done beforehand but hey, we all make mistakes.) I've made a note in the description correcting it and I apologize for any misinformation I may have spread.
    2. I hope I've made it clear that I'm not trying to convince anyone to change their opinions on these books with my criticisms. If you love one of these books and disagree with my statements, that's totally cool & I respect your opinion :)
    MUCH LOVE. x

I think it's great to acknowledge that people's opinions change! Especially with the internet, viewers can watch a video from 4 years ago and then watch a current video right afterwards, which promotes a timeless feeling. I also really like how you make it clear that these are your views and that people should respect that. Everyone has different opinions and as long as you're not being rude to people who think differently, it's wrong for people to do that to you. I always find it so annoying when someone gives their opinions on something with thoughtful and reasoninng and stuff and then someone comes along and saying that person is stupid for not agreeing with them :/

I think it's great that you made this video!! I feel like nobody really talks about changing their opinions on books. Especially when that change is negative or controversial..
I know I definitely view certain books differently now to when I first read them (positive & negative), and sometimes it does take another perspective to point things out to you that you wouldn't have noticed otherwise.
Also lol was not expecting you to mention my review on Anna, ahaha thankyou

Right, I loved bully by Penelope Douglas but slowly started to hate it after 2 years bcoz I realized that it is really toxic love story, where girl is stupid and boy is controlling and treats her like trash and she gets treated like trash , no self respect , always taking stupid decisions and hitting anyone she wants to, never tell her parents about how she is being harassed , also sexually, just bcoz she wants to solve her problems herself at 16, I really loved it for first time I read to now I realize that I dislike both the main characters now, even tough I ship them, and still want them together

the amount of times the author said someone “murmured” something is the reason why i had to stop reading the book. probably 20 times a chapter. when i hear the word murmur i get scary flashbacks

"If you think that I would lie about what's inside the book and what my feelings on this book are, because I was being paid for it, please 'effing' unsubscribe because you clearly do not know me at all." ... Anyone who knows you, whether in real life or as a fan watching your videos, knows this is 100% honest! You don't HAVE to explain yourself, you don't HAVE to share your feelings, you didn't HAVE to make this video, you chose to say "Hey, at one point I felt this way, but over time my eyes have opened a little more, I've grown as a person, and now let me tell you why I feel differently." ... and for that, I thank you, because you continue to be an inspiration

I think your journey with TID is hilarious because I had a similiar one with TMI. I read City of Bones back in 2010 and thought it was meh. Then I read City of Ashes and didn't like it. Then I stopped reading Cassie's books until I picked up TID. I fucking adore TID and was inspired enough to give TMI another go. Fast forward a few years. By this time COHF was not out yet. So I re read COB and COA and didn't really like them again 😂 then read COG and like it alot. Then it took me another year to read COFA and COLS. Then in Christmas 2014 I decided to finally read COHF. I blew through that baby in 2 days and had THE BEST time reading it. It is right now my favorite TMI book and made me love the series as a whole. Now that I appreciate the characters so much now (while reading TID, TDA etc.) I would love to give TMI another sweep.

I guess we all have different experiences reading books and sometimes we need to be aware that there are different perspectives. Lily C Reads did that for me on Eleanor and Park, it was so interesting to see her review of it.
As for Carve the Mark, there was a lot of assumption on what the author thought and Veronica Roth explained what she based her story on. On her official statement she explained some of the phrases and expression used on the books and what she meant versus what people thought of it. As an author, she could probably had sensitive beta readers but now it's done.
I would recommend the review of Francine Simone for this book.

    • @emmmabooks
      @emmmabooks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Yes I did read her response! I do wish she had at least apologized for the way things came across because she apparently needed to explain herself for things to be clear, but yes I hope she uses sensitivity readers in the future.
      I loved Francina!

    • @FarhatC28

I don't think she needs to apologise for it. To me it is a ridiculous assertion to have an author apologise for how her work is being interpreted. It's the definition of 'PC'. Roth defended her book through a statement and even Sabaa Tahir backed her in a Tumblr post acknowledging that the book can be interpreted differently and she saw no racism or ableism. Personally, I think in this circumstance it was enough.

I am going through my TMI and TID series reread right now in chronological order (I just have to read CoHF) . I adored TID the second time around (I think I may like it more than TMI?!) . Initially, I wanted to read through this series to get through all of Cassie's books, but it felt weird to not be following the TMI characters that I grew with for six novels. I flew through the series, so I didn't get to appreciate it. Rereading it now, I connect so much more to the characters and storyline. I think I had to grow with the story and I'm so glad that I did (and you did, too) 💕

I can relate on opinions changing with books as you get older there are some I look at now still with found memories but think...oh my gosh why did I not notice this before..

I totally understand why you had a hard time with TID. It’s so hard to keep from comparing something you love to something similar. I read the books in publication order, which made it easier for me to take all of the characters in (it was also last year, so i was quite the newbie!) But I’ve definitely had to step back from other series because I found myself wanting them to fill a gap that a “similar” book left behind. Distance really helps!

I just found your channel and have been browsing through and watching a bunch and for some reason hadn't subscribed yet. This video is the one that made me make sure I was subbed.
It says a lot about a person when they are able to take in new information and alter their stance based on that new information. It says even more when they can admit that they've done so to people other than themselves. The fact that you posted a video like this on your TH-cam channel speaks volumes about your character. Thank you so much for the videos that you make. :)

Anna and the french kiss is still my favourite ya contemporary. I think that this story is just so real. things like that are actually happening in real life. of course I am not happy with their behavior or thoughts or actions sometimes but that is what makes this story so real. you can relate to it, because you know that things like this are happening in the real world, people cheat emotionally even if it is not a good thing and a lot of times people aren‘t even aware of it. so you can see it from the hater side because of how these teenagers act or just use this as a thing of reality and that it maybe helped people being more aware of their thoughts and actions. after all, everything you do and say depends on how your motivation behind it.

emmmabooks I‘m not saying I‘m supporting it! Or that I am doing that myself because I think betraying in no matter what way is a seriously bad thing! I was just saying that it fits into this world, because the media always tells you to get rid off something you don‘t want anymore or put effort in it. they don‘t tell you about repairing until it’s good again.

Is is such a great idea for a video. People’s opinions can change over time so it makes sense that how you felt about a book years ago is different from now. I know I enjoyed Twilight when I first read it as a little girl with zero understanding of a healthy relationship, but now that I am older and in a healthy relationship I would not be able to stand trying to reread it.

Aww Emma I love how honest you are with your subscribers! I personally read Carve the Mark after I knew the terrible things people said about it and I still enjoyed it, I felt so bad for saying it on my channel and on all the other social media platforms but I guess sometimes we all have different opinions and that's just life. I agree with you on Anna and the French Kiss, my personal favourite is Isla and the Happily Ever After in that series, and I didn't pick up on the problematic aspects until watching the review mentioned. And yay to your opinion changing on TID as I absolutely adore that trilogy :)

    1. I'm glad that I watched this to see your opinion on Anna and the French Kiss. I don't read a lot of contemporary, and as I've been planning to branch into it a little more this was a series I'd considered reading BUT now that I know about the cheating, this will definitely not be a series I read. That just makes me so uncomfortable and I would totally hate to get invested in a relationship built on that, so thank you!
    2. I had the EXACT SAME response from TMI to TID as you! I adore/d TMI so much that when I read TID I just really super couldn't get into it. Will was great and all, but like it wasn't the cast that I'd grown to know and love (and I was totally in love with Jace) so I couldn't vibe with TID but I'm waaay more open to them now and I'll probably be reading those books again next year to re-experience them.

I know that when I read the mortal instruments the first time, I read the first 3 decided they were not something I liked at all. I was about 13 I think, I just- at that time- didn't feel like they made me feel good so I decided I hated them. I remember my friend was obssessed and I still was like no ew I hate them, but then the tv show came out and I watched it and was like wait I don't remember this, and I was so sure it wasn't the book I bought and reread the series. And now I am in love with Cassandras writing so much! I remember the first time I read Anna and the French Kiss. I was on the bus on my way to Paris (my favorite place in the world) for the third time and I was bored (did not bring very captivating book with me...) so my friend lent me hers (which was of course Anna). The moment I opened it I fell in love. I remember how I was reading it the whole first day in Paris - I made so many stops in so many parks so I could just sit and read... It was so mesmerizing and I loved absolutely everything about it! It just made me love Paris even more (which honestly is quite impossible..)! So of course I wanted to re-read it again and again. So couple months later I opened it again and here is when I realized that it is not as perfect as I thought the first time... I saw all those issues you already mentioned (cheating, slut-shaming, etc.) but in the end it still brought all those beautiful and lovey-dovey feelings I had before and for that I consider this one of my favorites of all times! Even now when I feel down this book can get me out of it and for that I will always be grateful!
There are just some books I cannot take too seriously (and honestly I do not want to). Sometimes I feel like critical reading takes away the joy I always felt with a book in my hands and this year it actually got me into the biggest slump of my life so I have decided that in 2018 I am going to read for pleasure only! :)
But still, I completely admire anyone who is able to combine critical reading with pleasure reading and by watching your videos I can see you are one those who can. I love how professional you are but still you just cannot hide that love you have for books and reading. True inspiration! :) Keep up the good work!!
P.S. Sorry for this lengthy post.. I just wanted to put it out there that sometimes it is ok to read for pleasure (and not get bashed for it) and not take life too seriously :)

This video was amazing, it feels like nobody wants to talk about changing opinions which is weird since everybody does that to some extent! Change can be good and without any change we don't grow, to show that you have changed and that you are able to take in what other people feel/have felt and revaluate your opinion shows immense character. Honestly, you are so intelligent and inspring!
Also I remember your 50 shades of grey videos, a lot of people were posting somewhat positive although not nearly as supportive as your videos were. Additionally, I prefer your fashion sense now xD I never really had an opinion on shades though, I only saw the movie and after reading a lot of biographies featuring trafficking, rape etc. to me it felt like a super bad rip off of Twilight, "spiced" up a bit to be potentially harmful to some humans.
That's not a change though, I have learned a lot more about ableist writing and harmful tropes. Some of my favorite books contain this, like Not Otherwise Specified with slurs to the lesbians. I have also become more weary of non own voice authors that don't seem to have taken the time to take care to research/educate themselves before writing.
The only book I really changed my mind about was probably Codename Verity, hears say from other's regarding what the author thought about how we saw characters as queer which was not okay? Also how one of the girls used the other/no trust in the end?

However, it wasn't too much of a huge issue for me, I think I felt this more strongly with Lola and the boy next Door. I LOVE Lola and the Boy Next Door best but I really had a problem about how Lola went about her relationship with her boyfriend and Cricket, which resulted in her and her BF really hurting each other in the end because of this. Like I had a whole huge rant about this in my goodreads review when it read haha. Regardless I loved that book, I literally read it in no time 😩 .

I like that you are open to changing your opinions on books. I do have a question though. How come some books like 50 shades and ANTFK people dislike based on the actions of the characters yet a book like You by Caroline Kepnes in which the characters have almost zero redeeming qualities get so much love? I understand that if someone has a personal experience with the subject matter it is going to change their view of the text but other than that sometimes the arguments of reviewers seem hypocritical. Just would be curious about your thoughts on that.

A big part of the argument of "why can't a book just be a book" is that if you continue to support a book knowing the character's (unchallenged) actions are wrong, the overall takeaway is that you think it's okay if you don't speak about it. At the end of the day, the money you spent on that book or the time you took it out of the library tells the publishers "Consumers want more of this." Fiction doesn't exist in a vacuum so what we condone within fictional limits will eventually translate to real life. So when people say "I support Fifty Shades but I don't like Christian's actions" you're telling the industry to produce more books that romanticize controlling, somewhat abusive love interests whether or not that's how you truly feel. And with more books with controlling love interests, the more women believe this behavior is acceptable and learn to tolerate these types of people. Then again, once you buy it even if you change your mind, the publisher still gets that message, but I believe the general consensus is that you're at least trying to rectify your actions & speak out against it instead of sweeping it under the rug.
Additionally, I've come to learn people who consume media will always have trade offs - There will always be things that are more important to us that cause us to sweep other problems under the rug. It can be as simple as "The writing wasn't good but I loved the romance so I'll still support the novel despite it's problems" - that's a trade off. Or it can be "I liked the plot but the romance was harmful so I won't support the novel because it's against my moral values." - That's also a trade off. I've even seen it where it's weighing different forms of representation like "Even though this book was abelist, it has great representation for people of color and as a person of color, that makes the book valuable for me." - That is also a trade off. Personally, I'm attempting to identify my personal trade offs and work at lessening them so that my reviews can be more fair, but the fact is that we all have them even if we don't want to admit it. I think these conversations get easier when we can say "Yeah, I'll bee hypocritical on occasion but I'm working on it." I try to not judge someone else's trade offs too hashly because I know I have my own too, which is why I don't shame others for deciding to read a book I don't agree with.
It's a great discussion to have in the book community because there's so many opinions!

emmmabooks I see your point. I guess it's the same with all media outlets as well. As a psychology major as well ( masters) I wonder if there's an underlying reason as to what we let pass and what we don't? For instance someone saying they can't watch a movie about sexual assault but a movie about murder is fine. Perhaps personal experience and what not. Thanks for answering with a well thought out response.

I think that's definitely a cause to it as well! We also may be desensitized to certain things which is why murder/torture in horror movies is fine, but rape is much less explicit in the general media so we aren't as used to seeing it. Good luck with your masters! :)

Great video, Emma. I think it was a good one. Opinions on books can change after awhile away from it or a rereread. For me, a book that I hated orginally but now love is the Song of Achilles. I read it last time and felt so unsatisifed because it seemed overhyped. I decided to reread it again and fell so in love. It's actually my favorite books of this year

Subscribed to your channel after watching this video. After watching it I spent 40 minutes in front of my bookshelfs thinking how my opinions have changed about each book I read in the past.😅
