    I have to admit that I don't get as excited by live edge bowls as much as I used to Phil, but this bowl really grabbed my attention. Wonderful work!

    Hello Phil. Lar from 🇨🇦. Glad i stopped by today to watch you turn this BEAUTIFUL bowl. I really like how the finish turned out. Just a very nice shine and the bark looks very nice as well. As usual, another educational and entertaining video. Thanks for all you do for your fans.

    I like the emphasis on using a tail stock for safety even when you may not need it, also I like when Phil mentions the lathe speeds it is truly helpful.

    Holly Cow Phil that is one great piece of wood. The shape is really nice. Having it curve back in at the top really gave the perfect look with the live edge. That is a stunning design! And the finish you sure put the shellac on nicely. You got me laughing with the "Don't just jam it in there you big stupid"
    Another fantastic turning from Dave's stash of wood. Thanks Dave for sending that.

      I have a 4x4x10 inch spindle blank left from the heart of the trunk. Twisted a bit as it seasoned. I'll eventually get a vase out of it. A lot of "magic wand" blanks, some spalted stuff, as well. Wood just comes to me! Some days it falls out of the sky!

      I'm sooo fortunate, Gary, that viewers like Dave are willing to share their stash with me. Don't forget, you have sent me some great wood, too! If not for that, I would still be turning bug eaten mystery wood. The shape just kind of developed on it's own, you know how it goes. And, yeah, I was a little surprised at that little whoops of mine! Thank you buddy, I really appreciate your time watching and commenting, it means a lot to me!

      Phil we are all happy to send some wood your way. It is so much fun watching you turn a piece of wood that I may have sent. As a matter of fact I have a nice piece of Oak that will be coming your way soon.
      I am constantly saying to myself. You Idiot! Like when I set the remote for my camera down and now I cant find it. But I put it in a safe place.
      I always look forward to Thursdays so keep on a turnin my friend.

    Hi Phil, ANOTHER learning experience. I am starting work on live edge and nature bark. SOOOOOO much to learn. Your videos seem like I'm standing right beside you. Your candor and humility make the whole experience a real treat. Thanks.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Howdy, Tom! Thank you so much! Once you start turning the natural stuff it's really hard to go back. I've found full round, plain bowls very intimidating because they depend on ME for design rather than just going with what mother nature had in mind. Best wishes for successful turnings!

    Nice bowl.
    Am I the only person that enjoys hearing the chatter grim turning at high speed playback? It's like therapy to me. I would've like to hear that for this bowl.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop

      Thanks, Cowboy! I can hear it when I'm editing the video but I guess TH-cam removes it somehow once it's uploaded. It didn't used to be that way but has been for quite awhile now. Don't know why.

    As always when I send you a piece of wood and then have the wonderful opportunity to not only watch you turn it, but also get to hear (and this is more important to me) *why* you turned it a particular shape, I have to say:
    Thank YOU, sir! for giving back so freely! I can't help but send you more! (and I shall! oh, yes, I truly shall. still down-sizing frantically!)
    By the way, this holly tree's trunk is another close-to-home find that has it's own story. Would be happy to share that story should anyone be interested.

    I have to keep looking up all the beautiful trees you have in your part of the world, like this lovely Holly piece, because they make for such beautiful woodturning pieces, particularly in the hands of an expert, & don't say you are not one of them Phil because I'm here to tell you You Are! Phil, the shape you decided on seems to me to be 'spot on', but we all expect that from you, the Papa & a few others I watch. The finish looks perfect as does the live edge. Keep them coming mate.

    You make me so jealous sometimes. Lol I have been turning now for about two months, everyday. I'm in love. I have made two 55 gal garbage cans of sawdust. 😅 not much else😢😢 haha you make it look so easy, thank you for you tutelage and expertise in your turning. I'm 72 and wanted to do this all my life. But have been too busy in life to do it. Ha. I have made a few mushrooms and candel holders but as of yet unable to successfully make a bowl 🥣. They still seem to be still be just out of my reach. I continue to blow out the sides. ( In a terrible way)😢 lol keep up your wonderful work, you inspire me.
    Respectfully
    Lary

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love reading this comment, Lary. Not because you have yet to turn a bowl but because of your determination to keep trying. I may make it look easy but I can tell you, in the beginning, I had wood flying everywhere! Huge catches, I even broke the banjo on my old Delta lathe from having the gouge slam down hard on the tool rest. I nearly gave up! Then one day, it all just came together. All that practice just worked. Now it feels so natural to me, I just can't believe it. I've got a few years on you so, don't let that get you down. You've got this! 😄

    Thank You Phil...I like the closer camera work, I even jumped at about 5:15. Also like rolling the top over, gives it a softer look. And NO Phil YOU are NOT a "big stupid"!!! You are a skilled expert showing US dummies how a pro turns!!!!!!...Your 5/8" bowl gouge looks shorter. Guess that sharpening has taken it toll. Excellent show today Phil, I really enjoyed it...Thank You Calmwood Creations ...tm.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Jeff! I will be trying to bring the camera closer in the future. I like it too when I'm watching, just have to remember to do it. I'll have to go look at 5:15 to see what happened! Yes, the gouge is getting shorter. I'll have to do something about that pretty soon. Really glad you liked it!

    Beautiful!! You won't believe what happened to me this week, my neighbor cut down his holly tree and he saved me 8 pieces. I Anchor sealed it because it is literally dripping sap but after watching you video I can hardly wait until next year to turn some of it all the pieces I have are very similar to what you just turned. But it gets better I had another neighbor cut his avocado tree down and have 4 pieces of that for next year - great video thank you for sharing!!

    Nice bowl! I like the shape. Holly doesn't have much grain, but it finishes so beautifully to a mirror shine, so it is great when you want to focus more on form than flash. I've really enjoyed turning it, but unless you have connections to an urban arborist (or people who send you wood in the mail!) it's impossible to find. Thanks to Dave and Tuffy and the others who keep you supplied so you can spend your time making great videos instead of hunting down wood.

      Well, hard might not be the right choice of words, Bruce. Tight grained and firm is more like it. It actually turned quite well as long as my gouge was sharp. Ohhh, a table saw sled is sooo handy, you'll love it! Thank you, my friend!

    Beautiful finish on that Phil. Love the shape of it too.
    Sanding these shapes is tough. But I've got an idea running around in my head, that I think will make sanding these natural edge bowls much easier. Once I put it together, I'll let everyone in on it.

      I am looking forward to your idea on the sanding Mark. I just finished a winged vase that was a devil to sand.
