Beautiful!! You won't believe what happened to me this week, my neighbor cut down his holly tree and he saved me 8 pieces. I Anchor sealed it because it is literally dripping sap but after watching you video I can hardly wait until next year to turn some of it all the pieces I have are very similar to what you just turned. But it gets better I had another neighbor cut his avocado tree down and have 4 pieces of that for next year - great video thank you for sharing!!
Wow, sounds like you live in the right neighborhood and have terrific neighbors, Art. Enjoy!
Phil

Here's the rest of the story :
Early spring of '16 I was recuperating from a miserable bout with pneumonia and wasn't getting around very well. One morning I heard chainsaws in the neighborhood so got dressed and hobbled down to the corner, then to the other corner lot to see what was happening. There was a tree removal crew just beginning to fell the beautiful dogwood in the side yard. I chatted up one of the guys about chances of getting some dogwood! He called his boss over who said, "Sure! How much do you want and how will you cart it away? Oh, and do you want any of the holly in the back?" The dogwood trunk was about 9" diam., the holly was nearly 14" with two big crown crotches, one above the other. BIG! TALL! WOW!
Cutting it short: I went home and got the pickup, parked it at the curb where the crew boss directed and went home to get breakfast and coffee. Boss man rang the doorbell and said, "All done! Come and get it!" The bed of my Nissan Frontier was FULL! of rounds about 16" long. The piece I sent Phil was a section of a branch above the top crotch.
What a haul! Took me less than a minute to walk from home to where the trees were felled! How cool is that?
Oh, yeah-- I wore out my electric chainsaw on that pile and had to purchase a new one, gas-powered Stihl. I've only got a couple pieces left. You did that one proud!
Well darn that's better than the truck load of Black Locust I got. Mine was 4 blocks away. Sheesh all the diesel and burned getting it.
Still some there. But way to big for me.
You did good Dave!
Gary
My biggest hual to date was the Norwegian maple from just behind our garage. The crew guys cut rounds to my specs and humped them all over the back fence. All I had to do was roll them away. Left the trunk butt on the bare ground to spalt. Still have to slice it up.
It seems you are always in the right place at the right time, Dave! On the other hand, you are also very alert to this kind of thing so you are the kind of guy that makes it happen! Great job, buddy!
Phil
Watch your USPS mail box midweek, maybe Tuesday. Sayin' no more!
Wow, OK! It ain't even my birthday! :) Thank you very much, Dave, now I can't wait!
Hi Phil, ANOTHER learning experience. I am starting work on live edge and nature bark. SOOOOOO much to learn. Your videos seem like I'm standing right beside you. Your candor and humility make the whole experience a real treat. Thanks.
Howdy, Tom! Thank you so much! Once you start turning the natural stuff it's really hard to go back. I've found full round, plain bowls very intimidating because they depend on ME for design rather than just going with what mother nature had in mind. Best wishes for successful turnings!
Phil
Another great piece Phil, the shape, the finish, it’s a real stunner.
Always enjoy getting a notification from your channel.
Take care my friend and all the best from the UK.
Geof
The shape just kinda happened, Geof, but I'm glad you like it! So good to hear from you, my friend!
Phil
You make me so jealous sometimes. Lol I have been turning now for about two months, everyday. I'm in love. I have made two 55 gal garbage cans of sawdust. 😅 not much else😢😢 haha you make it look so easy, thank you for you tutelage and expertise in your turning. I'm 72 and wanted to do this all my life. But have been too busy in life to do it. Ha. I have made a few mushrooms and candel holders but as of yet unable to successfully make a bowl 🥣. They still seem to be still be just out of my reach. I continue to blow out the sides. ( In a terrible way)😢 lol keep up your wonderful work, you inspire me.
Respectfully
Lary
I love reading this comment, Lary. Not because you have yet to turn a bowl but because of your determination to keep trying. I may make it look easy but I can tell you, in the beginning, I had wood flying everywhere! Huge catches, I even broke the banjo on my old Delta lathe from having the gouge slam down hard on the tool rest. I nearly gave up! Then one day, it all just came together. All that practice just worked. Now it feels so natural to me, I just can't believe it. I've got a few years on you so, don't let that get you down. You've got this! 😄
Wow stunning finish you’ve achieved, beautiful bowl Phil. Always great to watch and learn from you. Regards Jules, Droitwich, England
I'm so glad you like it, Jules, thank you very much!
Phil
Hi Phil still playing catch-up really love this bowl. The grain so light and shiny.
This one is kind of a sleeper that grows on you, John. Thank you!
Nice one!
Thank you, Harpo!
Phil
I have to admit that I don't get as excited by live edge bowls as much as I used to Phil, but this bowl really grabbed my attention. Wonderful work!
It is a bit different, Mike. Thank you, I'm glad you like it!
Phil
Beautiful
Glad you like it, thank you!
Phil
Holly Cow Phil that is one great piece of wood. The shape is really nice. Having it curve back in at the top really gave the perfect look with the live edge. That is a stunning design! And the finish you sure put the shellac on nicely. You got me laughing with the "Don't just jam it in there you big stupid"
Another fantastic turning from Dave's stash of wood. Thanks Dave for sending that.
Gary
I have a 4x4x10 inch spindle blank left from the heart of the trunk. Twisted a bit as it seasoned. I'll eventually get a vase out of it. A lot of "magic wand" blanks, some spalted stuff, as well. Wood just comes to me! Some days it falls out of the sky!
I'm sooo fortunate, Gary, that viewers like Dave are willing to share their stash with me. Don't forget, you have sent me some great wood, too! If not for that, I would still be turning bug eaten mystery wood. The shape just kind of developed on it's own, you know how it goes. And, yeah, I was a little surprised at that little whoops of mine! Thank you buddy, I really appreciate your time watching and commenting, it means a lot to me!
Phil
Phil we are all happy to send some wood your way. It is so much fun watching you turn a piece of wood that I may have sent. As a matter of fact I have a nice piece of Oak that will be coming your way soon.
I am constantly saying to myself. You Idiot! Like when I set the remote for my camera down and now I cant find it. But I put it in a safe place.
I always look forward to Thursdays so keep on a turnin my friend.
Gary
Absolutely stunning such a beautiful masterpiece by a wonderful craftsmanship Mr. Phil . Take care my friend god bless from the

Wow, so glad you like it, Cajun, thank you!
Phil
Really nice Phil. Looks like it stayed white too, so often Holly turns creamy when finish is applied. 👍🇺🇸
Thank you, Cortland! It did darken slightly but yes, mostly stayed a lighter color and I was hoping for that, too.
Phil
This piece is actually very striking! I've watched tons of turning from various Craftsmen and do a little turning myself when I make the time. I am really very taken by this project. Bravo!
Wow, thank you so much, Matthew, I'm glad you like it!
Phil
Very nice wood, good job 👍🏼
Thank you, Tomas!
Phil
Wow Phil this Holly bowl is breathtakingly stunning and the grain is awesome. I love the live edge it looks like you put a copper ring around the edge. Just magnificent.
Thank you, Kobie, I'm really glad you like it!
