It’s very early in a glorious Oregon morning, everyone is still sleeping, and I was trolling thru utube, looking at the marvelous wood turnings that fascinate my soul, and came upon this video of a guy with a small chunk of what had to be scrap wood. It takes a very creative, receptive eye to behold what your hands made of this. What you said while you brought forth what had been hidden in the scrap made the reveal take me on the journey with you. Now, I have spent a very large amount of time with various guys, and one gal, seen brought forth so much beauty, but you spoke not of just technical stuff, but gave a glimpse of your joy in what you do. At one point, you were voicing grateful thanks that others were interested in what you, the ‘old guy’, was doing. Please know that often it takes an ‘old guy’ and his lifetime of creating to just simply share his trip with others. Know you just do this and that it resonates with others. You do, indeed, have the gift, the touch. Wish I could know you more. You anywhere near the Willamette Valley in Oregon? We have glorious wood here, and most of it is not maple! Joanne
Joanne, you humble me with your very kind words. All I can say is Thank You! I swear, Oregon is the woodturning capitol of the world! Through my channel I have met many turners and it seems like half of them are in Oregon. And, I know Oregon has great wood! I'm so jealous! I did make a trip down the Oregon coast several years ago and stopped at many of the sawmills and other businesses offering all manner of beautiful burls and other fine turning woods. I've been wanting to come back but since I've lost my wife, I'm finding it difficult to get in my motorhome and make the trip alone. I'm just up in Washington so it's not a long trip and there are a few friends I would like to stop and visit along the way. Maybe one day. Phil
Phil you really surprise me. You start out with some pretty difficult pieces at times. Then when your finished with they are beautiful bowls everyone I've watched you turn 👍
Well Sir I just found and subscribed to your channel today. My Step Dad turned a lathe for the last 30 years of his life and made some of the most beautiful pieces you could imagine. I believe he has a piece or two in the museum in Florida somewhere but I have most of what we kept when he passed. He would bring his trailer from Florida to Michigan each year and haul back as many pieces of wood as I could find him. I worked at a veneer mill for years and would get big chunks of cut off Cherry, Red Oak White Oak and so many others. His favorite was the big burls I would hunt up in the woods up here and of course the beautiful Birds Eye Maple. His favorite saying about turning a piece of wood was. "Sometimes the most ugly piece of wood in the pile makes the most beautiful piece of beauty. Also that the piece was in there and all that needed to be done was remove everything on the outside of it.
Thank you so much for your subscription, kagnewmp12! I'll try to be worthy. Your dad sounds like my kind of guy! And, to have a son like you scouting out wood, well, who wouldn't want that? Sounds like you made a great team! Thank you for watching and for your great comment! Phil

Phil it might be small but it packs a big punch when it comes to looks. The bark is really nice. The grain in the wood also is very nice also. The shape you came up with highlights both. Hi Phil hope you are doing better. Hint, when I cut a mortice to use the chuck in expanded mode I run a bead of CA glue in the groove before mounting. Just a little insurance.
Howdy Phil Wow , what are the odd shape ... I too never heard of cherry plum tree ..Until you turned it ...I of coarse heard of cherry trees and plum trees that beard fruit . The plum wood I have has a little streaks of purple , and if I turn it when it is little wet I can actually smell Plum fruit . At some angles it does look like you have little purple in the wood . Do you ? The tree I got a lot of the branches it grew together and some big splits from where lightning hit it . very challenging...... I and a lot of pieces fly off . I really like that you are peace have especially on the inside of the bowl , how long were the contrast of the bark . Keep on turnin'
Howdy, Bruce! Yes, this wood does have purple streaks now and then. I wouldn't care for flying plum, that's for sure! I think the beautiful contrasting bark along with the beautiful grain is what makes this one of my favorite woods, ever! Thank you, buddy! Phil
Question: When marking the diameter of your recess, why don’t you have the caliper set to half the distance and place one end in the center punch hole and mark with the other end? Instead of eyeballing and then adjusting left or right to get them lined up.
In my case, Ron, I like to use the cone center rather than the smaller, sharper, center under the cone. It leaves a rather large hole. I just feel I won't be able to find the exact center with the sharp divider leg. Phil
Thank you, Mart! Well, mine is 3/8" and I drill a 5/16" hole, so that is 1/16" less for the drill size. You will need an accurate way to measure the diameter. I have a drill gauge which you can pick up at any good hardware store. Phil

I make my recesses about 3/16" deep, Lynda. You can use other tools like a skew ground to the right angle or even a swept back gouge if you're careful. 😊

Hey Phil! Beautiful work as always. I always look forward to your new videos. Always so down to earth and so real. This may be the first comment I've ever left on TH-cam, but it's well deserved. All the best!
Howdy, Chad! Thank you so much for your very kind words and for making my video the first for your comment, I truly appreciate that!
Phil
Such a gorgeous little dish...love it! I would have turned it the same as you!
Great minds, Carol, thank you!
Phil

Phil

Thank you, Yves, I keep trying!
Phil
Nice one Phil, lovely piece 👍👍👍👍
Thank you, Mark, glad you like it!
Phil
you must drink some coffee whilst you are waiting for the feed n wax to dry, but i think you deserve it, you make me look at every piece of wood when i am out with the dog, i just need a big bag to carry it all home thinking of you. you are amazing thank you
Looking for wood is a great idea, Nigel. Thanks for watching! 😊
Cool
Phil it might be small but it packs a big punch when it comes to looks. The bark is really nice. The grain in the wood also is very nice also. The shape you came up with highlights both. And the finish really tied it all together. You pulled out everything that piece of box filler had in it.
How about next week turn the box that it came in??? I know you could come up with something...LOL
Great job my friend,
Gary
Hahaha, there you go again, Gary! Causing me to smile, laugh out loud, at your comment! Thank you, buddy, for continuing to support me and my channel, much appreciated! I'll be looking up your newest when I'm done here.
Phil
Lovely little piece Phil and congratulations on getting 7k subs! Keep turning and keep sharing.
Glad you like it, hoppers2010! Whoever would have guessed 7k people would want to watch an old guy turn on the lathe? Not me! I'll keep at it, thank you!
Phil
Something to drop your coins in at the end of the day on the dresser
Cufflinks, rings or watch maybe.
It's a nice peace.
Love it
Thank you very much, Don, great ideas, too!
Phil
I believe you could make a scrap piece of plywood look pretty
Thanks, Dave! I have glued up and turned plywood a couple times. It makes some interesting patterns. 😄

Hi Phil hope you are doing better. Hint, when I cut a mortice to use the chuck in expanded mode I run a bead of CA glue in the groove before mounting. Just a little insurance.
Hi Peter! Thank you for touching base. I may be coming to Tacoma, soon, I'll text or call you if I do. Doing OK. Thanks for the tip!
Phil
Beautiful little dish! I love it! 💜💜
No novel today. My day has not been very good. 😢😢 💔
Hugs to you my friend. 💜🤗🌸🦋🌎
Thank you, Auntie!
I'm so sorry you are having a bad day.
A BIG hug right back at you and a wish for a better day, tomorrow.

As usual beautiful. You said it was easy but it's probably a bit of an exaggeration.
Thanks Carsten Sweden
Thank you, Carsten! Cheers! 😊
GReat job as usual PHil. REally nice color. Cant wit till next week.
Some of the prettiest wood I've turned. Thank you so much, Ron!
Phil
Very nice piece and nice to watch. Could you let me know what polish you used from the bottle? Thanks Kim
Thank you, Kim! This finish is Howard Feed & Wax. It's available at many stores that sell paint or on the Internet.

Howdy Phil
Wow , what are the odd shape ...

Phil
Lovely job Phil, i've just got a screw chuck for my lathe, how do i know what diameter to drill the hole, thanks
Thank you, Mart! Well, mine is 3/8" and I drill a 5/16" hole, so that is 1/16" less for the drill size. You will need an accurate way to measure the diameter. I have a drill gauge which you can pick up at any good hardware store.

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Thank you for the tip

Howdy, Jimmy! Thank you so much for watching and for your great comment! I have never sold any of my work. I'd like to but just don't have the time for packing and shipping. I'm a one man show!
Phil
Great as usual, lovely little piece. What made you decide on a recess instead of a tenon?
Thanks again, looking forward to next week 😜
Thank you, Steve! About the only time I use a recess is when it's a small piece like this or a thin piece like a platter. It just seems to take less material when I need as much as I can get. Thanks for watching and I'll be here with you, next week!
Phil
Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop thanks mate, take care 👍🏻
How deep should a recess be if you don’t have one of those dovetail tools or is there a way to make that with one of the other tools?
I make my recesses about 3/16" deep, Lynda. You can use other tools like a skew ground to the right angle or even a swept back gouge if you're careful. 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop thank you. I will try that. I really appreciate you taking time to answer my questions. I am trying to learn and I am enjoying the process. Thank you again.
@@lyndaowen2154 The angle does not have to be perfect, just kinda close. You got this!
Hard not to like
Thank you, John!
Phil
i use a shoe brush on the bark i use same wax
Yeah, I guess that would work well, too, Norman. Thank you!
