Thanks for this, and all your other D90 videos. They're nicely presented and in nice bite-size chunks, where I can maintain concentration and absorb the info! I've had my D90 for just two weeks and through your videos I'm still finding features I wasn't aware of!
Thank you sooo much for this video. For the longest time, I didn't understand bracketing. Even in my photo class, it went in one ear and out the other.
Thanks for the video. Concise and to the point. I'm brand new to photography and I understood it perfectly fine and was able to immediately set this on my camera. I don't know why a few others are bitching about it, I found it to be EXACTLY what I was looking for. Off to create my first HDR.... exciting :)
Very straightforward, clear explanation. Thank you for your great effort to produce this and your other informative videos! Keep up the good work, and I hope your efforts produce significantly to your business cash flow.
Thanks, your video was of great help. While trying it on my camera, i had earlier left the ex.comp at -2. So while bracketing at MTR-UNR-OVR it became -2,-4,0 with a 2 stop bracketing. I had to change the ex.comp back to ZERO first. You may add it as a annotation. Thanks.
I understand what you are saying. You are right. Keep in mind though, many people don't want to spend the time later post processing or have the software for it. , Also some people shoot in continous shooting mode, if they shoot in raw, it would slow down the frames per second.
You can record the menu screen by taking the video output and putting it though a converter and into your computer. We did this video with the composite output into a Tricaster mixer and out to a Sony firewire converter and into our computer, editing in Sony Vegas
He explains it in the first minute of the video. But explained in a different way- Bracketing allows you get three pictures instead of one, so you can choose, later, the one that was exposed the best (if it is exposure bracketing) or 3 shots of slightly different color temp, (for white balance bracketing). Sometimes its easier back at home on the computer to see the proper exposure or color, that is one reason why you would use bracketing, to make sure the important shot is done right.
Ever heard of diffraction? Also the needed amount of light would be tremendous. There are by the way a few cameras with focus bracketing. I'd love to see that on a Nikon.
Very nice. Finally got me to understand how bracketing works on the d90. One question however. Either in CSh or CSl the camera will not fire off the 3 frames automatically. I still have to hit the shutter 3 times. Is there another setting that needs to be turned on?
WIth flash comp, it will take 3pictures with flash at 3 levels. If the flash is more powerful, the exposure of the subject will be greater but not necessarily the whole picture exposure. Yes, you get a different exposure, but mainly on what the flash is hitting. Some skin tones look more natural with less flash, the camera exposure will compensate for the less flash. If you are in shade where backlight is bright more or less flash may make it look more natural, this is where it helps.
im going to use this feature to make HDR images.... this will make things so much easier... would you recommend one or two stops either way for a normal HDR... thanks for the help!
Yes, the auto exposure does work well. You can change the image afterwords with JPEG. You can change even more with RAW but JPEG will handle most changes.
Great explanation. 2 questions: (1) Can you set it to fire all 3 shots of the bracket without having to actually push 3 times? (2) What is a good bracket range to use in an HDR program? Thanks.
it dosen't matter if it is outside or inside still dosen't go up to 2.0 but I'm not sure what you mean by the second question, but in the settings it says. e Bracketing/flash. And Auto Bracketing is set to AE only. And then there is a option that says Auto Bracketing (Mode M) which is set to "flash/speed/aperture"
Because sometimes you need the extra bracketing to replace some of the loss depth with out creating artifacts. Raw has a broad color range but it does not restore other parts of the image. I.e. clouds where the bracketing can help that. people who urban explore use bracketing over straight raw is because of lighting. HDR can help when you loose light rather than loose detail where even raw will still lose.
I don't know if that is an equal substitution, it would seem to be,but is there some drawback I am not thinking of? I would love anyone else to weight in on this issue.
@FirebrandNIRE - You can do this by setting your EV to -1, bracketing 3 shots, change EV to 0, Bracket 3 shots and then change ev to +1 and bracket 3 more shots. You end up with -3,-2,-1,0,+1,+2,+3) and an extra -1,+1 which you can just delete. ** I read this from a more advanced photographer, I'm rather new myself, but it makes sense. Hope that helps.
@jonvideo sure one can always sell the camera and get for example the D300 which gives you 9 steps of bracketing but then you should consider: The camera loses a lot of the value in the moment you have bought it and then want to sell it. For HDR also RAW shooting might be interesting because it gives you naturally more colour depth.
I would go try other modes on the top of the dial, perhaps there is some limit on manual mode doing that. The other thing to try is to reset the factory resets so the setting go back to when you got it. Perhaps you were in some menu at one time and accidently set a limit on the bracketing. Let me know if these things work.
Interesting comment worth some thought. Until you brought it up, I never gave it much thought, but you are right. There are newer model cameras that can give you more flexibility with bracketing. Is it possible you can sell your D90 and get one of those?
If you have your camera in Continuous shooting mode and you hand held it still I think you can take the pictures without tripod. But try not to move the camera from one shot to another. You want that for a HDR image i think, in a bright photo you can take pictures hand held, but that does not apply for a low light situation where you can get the picture blurry plus all the pictures may be different because you can't take the camera still for a long time.
Really great tutorial! I have a little problem though. When I go to "Bracketing/Flash" and then "e4 Auto bracketing set", it says "This option is not available with current settings"! What settings is the camera referring to? Help me please, I'm stuck...
If you want to shoot in manual made you don't want to the camera to include it's metered version. In manual will it automatically fire of 3 pics at the increments you chose regardless of the meter starting where you want?
Question: is there a way to obtain the same 3 bkt pictures (under, correct, over) with one button press? That would avoid me a tripod and remote control... I'm just toying a little with my D90 as I am a complete beginner, really.
@jonvideo hey jon! dont feel bad about it at all, this is nothing compared to what major companies do these days to get their money, so their CEO's can get the extra cash and buy their spoiled kids the lambo they didnt deserve and work their ass off for.. your videos are great! keep up the work!
Are you trying it inside in lower light? Have you tried it outside, Perhaps you are in too low light. Are you in exposure bracketing or flash bracketing?
It will keep doing bracketing until you reset it in the menu. It won't revert back to normal by just turning it off, you have to change the menu back again( The reverse of what we showed here)
Can some tell me if you have to reset your camera once you do the shots in bracketing so say I turn my camera on to take photos will it keep doing bracketed or will it shoot normal again ? I hope this makes sense lol :) Thanks ahead of time :)
ok, it is not complicated at all...one question, when you shoot the three shots, do you need to be depressing the bkt button for each shot? or does it mean that since you used the bkt button and set your parameters then the next three ( if you chose three) shots will be bracketed even if you let go of the bkt button? thanks.
I just bought the D90, and was about to use this tutorial to set up for HDR, but my bracketing options are greyed out in the menu. When I click them, it says 'this option is not available with current settings'. I searched for a resolution (for the last 2 hours!) and could only find advice that battery needs to be fully charged. I did that and it has not helped. Any ideas??
i tried it too and only getting 1 shot... and if i hold button longer, nothing happens. Do i take 3 separate shots, or i have to do bracketing together with Continuous Low mode. If Continuous-Low mode, do i have to release the button in time so i dont take the 4th shot, or it won't alow me to take the 4th?
thanks for the instruction! if i set the photos to RAW i cannot change the settings to auto bracketing; but i JPEG isnt that good as RAW; is there a solution? please reply, thanks a lot
To turn off bracketing if you dont want it anymore, simply hold down the BKT button and turn the rear dial so that it says 0F (0 frames). The bracketing symbol will disappear and you're shooting normally again!
Thanks for the reply about my reply- Glad you are learning HDR, a fun area to try to master, There is alot of good tuturials on HDR (High dynamic range photography- for those who are curious)- on the web and youtube. Email us a sample if and when you do one that you love. Please tell your photo friends about this channel and have them subscribe also- John
Im in "M" mode, and I keep turning the wheel to get more exposure but it only lets me choose between 0.3, 0.7 & 1.0. and thats only a third of the meter. It looks like it could go up to more stops :/ Thanks for quick answer BTW.
I tried it in all the different mode's no one worked, and I reset the camera that didn't work either. So I don't know if it is the camera? any more ideas?
great vids.... discovering things on my cam i didnt even know i had! but thats what you get when you buy such a nice camera while being a total noob at photography :P
Just got my D90 yesterday. When I try to set menu functions e1-e6 (under bracketing/flash) they are grayed out and it says "this option is not available with current setting." I'm not sure what setting that is. I'm sure it's operator error -- can anyone help?
Ohhh my goodness I learn SO much about the camera I've had for 5 years from your videos! Thank you so much!
Thanks for this, and all your other D90 videos. They're nicely presented and in nice bite-size chunks, where I can maintain concentration and absorb the info!
I've had my D90 for just two weeks and through your videos I'm still finding features I wasn't aware of!
The way you explain things makes it very easy to learn. Thank you very much for the videos!
VERY good video. Bracketing is essential for HDR photography and this makes it quick so you can shoot without a tripod. 5-star!
Thank you sooo much for this video. For the longest time, I didn't understand bracketing. Even in my photo class, it went in one ear and out the other.

Ahhh such a lifesaver! I've been trying to figure this out for a while and to think it was so easy to begin with! Thank you :D

Thank you so much for all those precious information. You are truly a live safer.
Thanks that's dead useful. Wanted to play with bracketing while on holiday recently inside some ruined castles, wasn't sure why it wasn't working!
Very clear and informative - not plastic like some others. Great for the experience and novice photographer.
Thanks for the nice complement. You may also enjoy the dvds if you want to go more indepth
Yes, Exposure bracketing is. I think you can only set it for 3, but check your custom menus, perhaps you can do more.
He explains it in the first minute of the video. Awesome tutorial! well explained without overwhelming the viewer!

Great video thanks alot, finaly someone explained it simple and easy to understand.
You usually set it to continuous and it works. I have done that for fog settings.

Wow thank you for the tutorial, i really appreciate it!!! I learned a lot and i will experiment with bracketing from now on :D
No problem, you are not a noob, keep on practicing, you should be a d90 expert in no time! Make sure you subscribe too.
Great explanation. 2 questions: (1) Can you set it to fire all 3 shots of the bracket without having to actually push 3 times? (2) What is a good bracket range to use in an HDR program? Thanks.
1). Nikon - Continous Shooting Mode
2). Lightroom
superb explanation ! I did know about bracketing. Thanks guys !

That is a great tip, thanks for posting it. What a great shortcut.
Try turing your dial on top . I think anything other than the p or the fully automatic setting should work.
Are you refereing to the exposure bracketing? Does it show more than 1.0 stop of bracketing on the meter? What dial mode are you in. Let me know.
Because sometimes you need the extra bracketing to replace some of the loss depth with out creating artifacts. Raw has a broad color range but it does not restore other parts of the image. This is a great video like all the others. Thanks.
I will go back next and look at our dvd set. It has been a while since we did that video so I forgot. I will let you know then.
@FirebrandNIRE - You can do this by setting your EV to -1, bracketing 3 shots, change EV to 0, Bracket 3 shots and then change ev to +1 and bracket 3 more shots. You can order at elitevideo com website and we ship to the uk
Thanks for fantastic tips
but using a flash i didnot see the bracketing difference is there any reason?
I will try to get one up sometime, Glad you like this one
Finally learned this! Thanks! HDR will be a lot easier now
Really great tutorial! I have a little problem though. When I go to "Bracketing/Flash" and then "e4 Auto bracketing set", it says "This option is not available with current settings"! What settings is the camera referring to? Help me please, I'm stuck...
I like 2 stops, I think it gives you more room for adjustment. in post production- John
If you want to shoot in manual made you don't want to the camera to include it's metered version. In manual will it automatically fire of 3 pics at the increments you chose regardless of the meter starting where you want?
Do you want more or less contrast?

I'm pretty busy till Wednesday, but will check then.

do u have to manually shoot 3 times? isint there an option for it to take 3 pictures automaticly when you shoot? correct me if im wrong plz
lol cheers I'm at uni and this helps more than reading a manual :P
I just bought the D90, and was about to use this tutorial to set up for HDR, but my bracketing options are greyed out in the menu. I did that and it has not helped. Any ideas??
Ahh.. that is the answer I was looking for!!!! Thanks!
Change the dial to another setting on the top of your camera, that should solve the problem. Let me know either way how it works for you.
hi I tried to do exactly what you say but I can only get one picture instead of 3.. is there something wrong with my camera?
i tried it too and only getting 1 shot... and if i hold button longer, nothing happens. Do i take 3 separate shots, or i have to do bracketing together with Continuous Low mode. If Continuous-Low mode, do i have to release the button in time so i dont take the 4th shot, or it won't alow me to take the 4th?
just set your drive mode to continuous low or continuous high shooting (4.5fps). that way you only press the shutter once and hold it.
Great tip, John!
thanks for the instruction!
if i set the photos to RAW i cannot change the settings to auto bracketing; but i JPEG isnt that good as RAW; is there a solution?
please reply, thanks a lot
How do i get the DVDs in UK?
Thanks for the nice complements!
To turn off bracketing if you dont want it anymore, simply hold down the BKT button and turn the rear dial so that it says 0F (0 frames). The bracketing symbol will disappear and you're shooting normally again!
I have the Nikon D3 and I can't set the STOP for more than 1.0, I want it up to 2.0, how do i do that?
Nice video. How do I remove bracketing?
@jonvideo Thanks for the quick reply, it worked!
Thanks, Im glad we could help.
So well explained. Thank you.
Will this work if you are shooting RAW?
You should be able to just do in tone. Let me know if this is not that case, But I'm pretty sure once will do it.
Glad you got it.
I dont understand what the -2 and 2 are doing. I get that 3 takes 3 frames but what do those other numbers do?
Yes, It should.
excellent tutorial. thank you.
Extremely helpful, thank you Sir!
Thanks for the reply about my reply- Glad you are learning HDR, a fun area to try to master, There is alot of good tuturials on HDR (High dynamic range photography- for those who are curious)- on the web and youtube. Thanks, very informative video.
Thank you! Great Video
It doesn't let me set the Bracketing due to my current setting. What setting do I need to change in order to set the Bracketing?
Thanks, These small videos lead some to buy the 2 dvd sets from our elitevideo dot com website, Plus a little from adsense, hope you subscribe.- John
the best way to bracket is with a tripod and using a remote IR trigger.
Im in "M" mode, and I keep turning the wheel to get more exposure but it only lets me choose between 0.3, 0.7 & 1.0. and thats only a third of the meter. It looks like it could go up to more stops :/
Thanks for quick answer BTW.
so it can only bracket 3 frames?
I tried it in all the different mode's no one worked, and I reset the camera that didn't work either. So I don't know if it is the camera? any more ideas?
perfect, this is what i'm looking for.
thanks
great vids.... discovering things on my cam i didnt even know i had! but thats what you get when you buy such a nice camera while being a total noob at photography :P
very useful explanation. Thxm
Thanks alot! Great help!
