Yep, you can keep shopoting 5 minute files until you run out of memory, It's just that each clip cannot be longer than 5 mins in HD. There's full details in my D90 review at cameralabs - check it out!
The video modes are identical. But obviously an davnatge of the D5000 is its articulated screen. I mentioned all this in my D5000 review - please read it, especially the movie mode page in the featuress section!
Thanks Gordan. I always love your extremely thorough reviews. You always give your viewers a true unbiased review of the product. I've been waiting for your review of the D90 ever since of heard of its release, and you didn't disappoint me. Now I just need to save enough cash to but it.
For what it's worth, I just wanted to say that I appreciate the effort you guys (CameraLabs) puts into these reviews and the website, especially for free! I work heavily in the video market but am a total novice to the still market and your reviews really steered me in the right direction for what I'm looking for - which is now this! Thanks again!
There's a big price difference - the D90 is a mid range camera, whereas the 50D is semi-pro, so it depends what you want and how much you have to spend. I compared them in the verdict of my 50D review at cameralabs . com, so check it out!
@Moolers I agree, the live view magnification wasn't great on the D90 compared to the Canons. They have improved it on the D5100, but I still think the Canon system has the edge in this regard. See my 600D / T3i vs D5100 video and you'll see a demo showing just that.
You do a fantastic job, Gordon. Thank you for all the information. I'm in the process of choosing my first DSLR camera and your video reviews are so helpful. Thank you for the time you put into creating these!
As you know I was a big fan of the D90 - in fact I bought one as a reference model for tests. It was snapped up from me by an operator in NZ who needed the D90 specifically because it had a certain port or feature which the newer ones didn't have. PS - I couldn't reply to your message due to your messaging privacy settings.
Just got mine in the mail. It really does feel solid, and the screen is incredible. Can't wait to use it on vacation. Your review (and a D50 my family had around) helped a lot. Thank you.
Hi, no problem - check out the verdict page of my D90 review at cameralabs . com where I've compared all three... and feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs forums...
Yes it does take good photos - you can see the quality for yourself in the results and gallery pages of my review at cameralabs . com, and how it compares to others.
Don't listen to that guy man. You make good videos and it really helps people like me who want to get a better DSLR camera (currently got a canon 1000D) and want to see the different features of it before buying. Keep up the great work.
Remember so far we've mostly only seen promotional videos from the 5D Mark II. The promos for the D90 looked pretty good too, so don't make any assumptions until lots of people have actually tested the new Canon.
@Koldipb what you can do is get a nikon 35mm 1.8 lens for your D5000 if you still have it. the aperture allows for much more light to come through, therefore lens grainy pictures.
Wow this brings back memories of when I had the Nikon D90. Back in 2011. Got some great photos with this camera. I still have a 20x16 picture of Malham Cove on my wall taken with this camera.
@AllAmericanGuy01 Thanks! Have you checked out my complete reviews over at cameralabs . com? There's loads more info there, and also our firendly forum. We have a great bunch of Nikon onwers who'd be happy to answer any Qs you have... I believe the D90 can control two SB-600s, but I'm no flash expert, so you'd have to check on the forum...
I agree, it would have been better to film the entire review in HD, but back in 2008 when I filmed it, I didn't have an HD camera to make the review (if only Nikon had sent me 2 D90's to test!), and I didn't have a computer capable of editing it. Remember back then it was very early days for HD. All my latest stuff is in HD though.
@sinoperture How do you do that? Doesn't YT dictate what versions are available? Why would you want a 240p version? DO you have a very slow connection?
In liveview, the auto focus mode is based on contrast detection, which is slow.. takes a few seconds. In the normal mode (through the optical view finder), a different method (phase detect AF) is used, which is way faster. In Nikon D300, for example, the phase detect AF is also available in live view mode, but is a bit slow because the pentaprism/mirror needs to be flipped for the focussing.
@staniz4 I'd love to review the K-x and K7, but Pentax has stopped sending cameras in for me to test - feel free to ask pentaxian1 if they can change this situation.
To date, Panasonic has only released two DSLRs, the L1 and L10, and neither of them had video recording. You'e probably thinking of a super-zoom compact like an FZ50 or FZ28.
@cameralabs Gordan thank you so much for doing these videos! I am thinking of moving from my D40 to the D90 and you are a real saint for this work you do. I bought my D40 after watching you on Camera labs.com. Don`t listen to the bad people on YT as they are always in a fight with whatever comes around. Good work Gordan and please don`t stop.
@amitgrand i was in your spot 2 weeks ago, and I went with the D90. for the following reasons: feels much better on the hand (even though I have tiny hands), slightly faster fps, better kit lens both optically and range so I don't have to spend $300 on a lens, penta prism view finder, changing most setting is just one button away( don't have to dig through menus), top lcd, i won't really need 18megapixels and I doubt I'll actually use video that much even though it is super awesome on the 550D.
Hi, you have to be careful about your Nikon models! The D3 and D700 have the same sensor, but they are full-frame. The D300 and D90 have cropped frame sensors which are physically smaller and don't have the low noise benefits of full frame (given the same resolution). As for the D90's sensor, there's a detailed description in my full review at cameralabs . com - check the features page. Remember these videos are just brief tasters!
Try these steps to set your camera for AE-L (hold): Menu > Custom Settings> f /controls > Assign AE-L/AF-L button > AE lock (hold) > OK; then you shouldnt have to hold the AE-L button all the time and you should be able to press it just once before starting the live view and it should hold the exposure settings fixed for the entire video.. if I am not wrong. Isnt that right, Gordon?
@Marlonpagaran: It may just be that the manual/autofocus switch has been switched from the autofocus "A" setting to the manual focus "M" setting. If this is not the case, then it's probably internally damaged and you need to get it repaired by a professional.
In Europe we pronounce it the way I said it in the video, and that includes all employees of Nikon in Europe. In America they pronounce it a different way. I agree though that in Japan it's more like Knee-kon.
Thanks Jason, you're very welcome! Don't forget you can support us, and allow the reviews to continue, by price-checking and shopping via our affiliate stores at cameralabs . com! PS - plus telling your friends abiut the site of course!
The man in the video surely knows his stuff. Great voice, really draws me into the video, which is great. As to the D90 - I'm really interested in this camera with the 18-105 kit lens. All I'm curious about is if the camera has some weather-proofing? Is it safe to use it in some light to moderate rain? I've used my old Panasonic FZ7 under such conditions and sometimes the shutter release button got stuck for a few days. However this toy is much more expensive and that's why I'm asking.
@youtoolgofckurself If he wants video, go for the D90. If he prefers fast continuous shooting, get the 50D. Don't forget you can support me by shopping through the partner stores page at cameralabs . com! Thanks!
They all offer differetn things and remember the D90 is cheaper than the 50D. You can see a comparison of all three in our latest Canon 50D review at cameralabs . com!
I personally don't believe it matters. All the factories are operating under specific standards regardless of their location. I've certainly had no problems with the Nikon gear that's been manufactured in Thailand for example.
hello gordon, this review was very helpful and well thought out. thank you as I have just bought this camera and needed to know a little more from someone who knows. well done.
By the way what would be very helpful would be an overview of using the Nikon DX series lenses on the 700, 600 and so forth. Some comparative images would certainly be helpful. Thanks
@cinexstudios The main difference is better handling, more controls(2 rollers) and AF motor, so you can use(autofocusing) none AF-S lenses, which is for example favourite Nikkor 50/1,8.
@Koldipb check and see if you have the high iso NR option on in the menu as well as long exosure NR. that might help. also use a tripod so you can use lower iso's . if your images seem to be coming out flat in color change your picture control setting to vivid. i hope that helps!
@cameralabs Thanks for the reference! As soon as I read your comment, I opened an account with you guys and posted a question and got answers a lot faster than I thought. Thanks a million!

True, there are a lot of great features in D90. But I was disappointed to know that some basic tools are implemented just as gimmicks in D90. Examples are: LiveView doesnt show exposure simulation, at high zooms, liveview is badly interpolated and makes it hard to judge focus, LiveView is only 15fps, etc. I returned it and ordered a Canon 50d. If you follow the video response link on this page, there is a link to the full review from the response video's page (from the more infor section).
Your review of the D90 was extremely helpful in deciding between rounding out my kit with a backup D80 body or upgrading to a D90. I'm not terribly impressed with the "Live View" or video options, nor would the extra bells and whistles enhance my shooting style, so I'll stick with the D80 for now. Absolutely no problem for a first time DSL user and I am very satisfied with it!
@Irish0881 You can achieve various outcomes with all cameras. It is just a matter of controlling settings, such as apeture, shutter speeds, ISO sensitivity, etc. If you are looking for a fairly simple DSLR, I would recomend the Nikon D3000 or the Canon Rebel XS. If not, start out with a compact camera with the same general settings of a DSLR (I choss the Nikon Coolpix p100) to get the feeling for what to do with a less technical camera, and once you master the basics, move to a DSLR.

To record your exact position co-ordinates on the image. You can see an example in our Canon WFT-E3(A) review...
Chris, thanks so much for posting this. Every time I post a Nikon review, I get a barrage of complaints saying I'm pronouncing it incorrectly!
You're welcome! Don't forget to support cameralabs and keep the reviews coming, please shop through the stores on my site!
You mean the Bulb mode - and yes it does. All DSLRs to my knowledge have it, although some may be limited to a certain time.
Thanks! Canon and Nikon often have models that fit inbetween each others, so below the D90 is the 500D / t1i and above it is the 50D.
Thanks Gordan. I always love your extremely thorough reviews. You always give your viewers a true unbiased review of the product. I've been waiting for your review of the D90 ever since of heard of its release, and you didn't disappoint me. Now I just need to save enough cash to but it.
@javajoe1974 Sadly there is no mic input on the D90, but there is on the new D7000.
The models I recommend are in the best buys section at cameralabs . com. if you read the verdict pages of the reviews, you can see how they compare.
I used a Sandisk card for my testing in the full review at Cameralabs . com. The card you see in the video was just a spare I used as a prop.
Look at the dates of the reviews and the year of the cameras I'm comparing them to in the scores. And also the category of comparison for the scores.
Yes it is. Cameralabs is based in Queenstown, New Zealand.
For what it's worth, I just wanted to say that I appreciate the effort you guys (CameraLabs) puts into these reviews and the website, especially for free! Thanks, more than ten years later!
Mee too mate ! I Have this camera for several years. it sill rocks. Also i have the D800.
I got a d90 today to star in this beautiful world of photography
You do a fantastic job, Gordon. Thank you for all the information. I'm in the process of choosing my first DSLR camera and your video reviews are so helpful. Thank you for the time you put into creating these!
Yes, the D90 has a built in AF motor so will AF older lenses.
As you know I was a big fan of the D90 - in fact I bought one as a reference model for tests. It was snapped up from me by an operator in NZ who needed the D90 specifically because it had a certain port or feature which the newer ones didn't have. Gordon, love your reviews. Keep them coming mate.
I've compared them in detail in the verdict pages of both reviews at cameralabs . com. Both sensors are essentially the same size.
Hi, no problem - check out the verdict page of my D90 review at cameralabs . com where I've compared all three... and feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs forums...

Yes, most non-DSLRs have had video for a long time. But is a new thing for DSLRs.
@cameralabs

Great to watch! i wonder if the movie mode is in HD?
Still watching in 2021.
I had that camera,my first DSLR and gave me beautiful and memorable pictures.
I remember it well, the first DSLR with video, albeit 720p.
How about the Nikkor 18-200mm or 16-85mm? I'd ask the Nikon owners on the cameralabs forum if I were you!
@amitgrand i was in your spot 2 weeks ago, and I went with the D90. for the following reasons: feels much better on the hand (even though I have tiny hands),

@MultiGrew nope. either you find a special mic that connects via USB or you buy the Canon Rebel T2i, which has the mic jack.
Hi Vanessa, the models I'd recommend are in the best buys section at cameralabs . com!
Thanks for the extensive technical review. I have a D40 and I am thinking of upgrading to the D90 and this review certainly helped me a lot.

@ravi930 No video, but I have a guide on what lenses to buy in the lenses section at cameralabs . com.
@cameralabs : Please ignore such comments. Your reviews have changed lifes. good luck!
@youtoolgofckurself If he wants video, go for the D90. If he prefers fast continuous shooting, get the 50D. Don't forget you can support me by shopping through the partner stores page at cameralabs . com! Thanks!
@azngamefreak46 My D3100 review is at cameralabs . com and there's several video samples you can download to check the picture and sound quality!

A friend helped me figure it out! Thanks much guys! By the way, it's with the AE-L/AF-L lock on the camera.
Thanks again!
@duncize This is the camera you are looking for, you just have to slow down the shutter speed and it will give you great results in very low light.
I personally don't believe it matters. All the factories are operating under specific standards regardless of their location. I've certainly had no problems with the Nikon gear that's been manufactured in Thailand for example.
hello gordon,
this review was very helpful and well thought out. thank you as I have just bought this camera and needed to know a little more from someone who knows. well done.
By the way what would be very helpful would be an overview of using the Nikon DX series lenses on the 700, 600 and so forth. Some comparative images would certainly be helpful.
Thanks
@staniz4 Like most magazines and review websites, they're all on loan and returned after the testing period.
Don't I demonstrate this in the video above?
@Pkr This Nikon is two years old - it's unfair to compare a new camera against one that's two years older.
@cameralabs Keep up the good work. your reviews and tips help a lot of budding DSLR photographers.
@cameralabs Thanks for the reference! As soon as I read your comment, I opened an account with you guys and posted a question and got answers a lot faster than I thought. Thanks a million!
i love all your reviews!!!
your reviews convinced me to buy the d90!!!
Thanks! It's not weather-proof like a semi-pro or pro DSLR, so you'd still have to be careful with ut - there's more details in my review at cameralabs . com, and also lots of owners in the cameralabs forum if you want their view!
@VTsnowboarding Thanks for your kind words. You do know digital rev is a shop, whereas I'm an independant journalist? They also have lots of staff whereas I'm a one-man operation. Anyway, thanks again for confirming why I shouldn't bother providing any more free content on YT.
just picked up my d90! even though the new lineup is probably gonna be announced by the end of this year i'm still happy with my purchase
Hi, it's only really Nikon which doesn't offer them on its non-pro models. Canon, Sony and Olympus all do.
Gordon thx for the great reviews ..
i'm now the proud owner of a D90 , thx for the videos and reviews on cameralabs . com
@cameralabs Speaking of the D7000, when are you planing to release a video review about it? really like your videos :)
@benj2227 theres the D5000 which takes the same pictures, and only costs around 700, but it does lose a few features (not very important ones), but later this year there maybe be an even newer version of that who knows
Yes, it's much quicker - see the design and features pages of my D90 review at cameralabs . com.
@iscientist Micro lenses is for pictures with more details like flowers and such , you don't need to buy a D90 eathen though your just going to take pictures of flat objects , and you can take with the standard kit lens 18~55mm on lower entry DSLR or just take the 18~105mm on the D90 , if your like taking large spaceous stuff , try getting a wide angle lens ...
i can't do much more , you have to do the choice making..
Thank you for posting your review.
As always - a top class and insightful review. Thank you and keep up the good work.
i'm wondering which is better , d90 or canon 50D?
No, if you want to film video, get a camcorder. See the movie mode page on my D90 review at cameralabs. com to find out why.
The D90 is my first system camera and I have absolutely no problem getting to grips with it. You can use it in a very automated mode until you are ready switiching to the other modes that lets loose your more creative side. Absolutely no problem for a first time DSL user and I am very satisfied with it!
Watching this in 2023, and loving it!
Check out my recent Nikon D80 video!
@@cameralabs I did! It is what brought me to this video. Thank you for your efforts!
@@SourojitBh thanks!
@CBN1359 Hopefully I'll have finished my D7000 review next week, which will include a veryd etailed new video! Check out cameralabs . com next week...
@Koldipb The quality is the same as the D5000.
Great review. Gotta love the part in 2:00 "Here's how that sounds."
There is a minimum focus distance. If you're too close, it may be impossible to focus correctly on the subject.
@Spwnd What was then?
@nailcandy Hey, you're welcome! Don't forget to tell your customers to visit my site, cameralabs . com!
