Alex Honnold Q & A After "Free Solo" Screening in Yosemite, 25 September 2018

  • On my first visit to Yosemite Valley in California, USA, while hanging out at the Village, I heard that Alex Honnold, one of the world's most well-known rock climbers, was in town for a free preview screening of his movie "Free Solo", a documentary about his unroped ascent of El Capitan in June 2017. This mighty cliff is just a couple of miles away from the Village where the screening took place, one of the great world meccas of climbing.
    After being shown in the theatres in several showings throughout the evening, Alex spent time chatting with the audience and answering questions. Here I show parts of the Q&A which I filmed after the screening I attended.

    Greatest physical achievement in the history of man..

    • @MrTobitobitobitobi
      @MrTobitobitobitobi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      No it definitly is not. From a pure physical standpoint there are plenty of much much harder climbs all over the world (and alot of other more impressive feats of athletics in other sports). Free Soloing is much more of a psychological achievement if you want to label it with something. Dont get me wrong it is for sure absolutely amazing what he did there but dont get it confused with "the greatest physical achievement ever"

    • @Reach1335
      @Reach1335 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      What sport is more physically demanding than endurance rock climbing? Especially without a rope to take rests on. Fear aside.

    • @Morscerta12
      @Morscerta12 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@MrTobitobitobitobi Respectfully disagree. The combination of strength, agility, endurance and focus on top of the mental strain of seeing about this ascent without a rope... it is, in my mind, the single greatest achievement in sports. Perfection or death... for 4hrs. Yea, incredible.

    • @m74d3
      @m74d3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Greatest mental achievement in the history of sports. The physical challenge doesn't come close to the mental challenge of staying calm for 4 hours. Perfection or death

    • @MrTobitobitobitobi
      @MrTobitobitobitobi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Tuah1131 If we can agree on defining physically demanding (in an endurance type of activity) as calories burned per hour pretty much every other endurance sport is more physically demanding. Take any long distance runners, bikers, iron mans whatever. If you go the other way around and look into more athletic type of sports. Watch e.g. world class gymnasts, figure skating. Maybe you got the wrong impression from my answer i just wanted to express my disagreement with the phrase "greatest PHYSICAL achievement in history". It is an incredible achievement no matter how you title it but if you are a climber yourself you will know that climbing (moderate stuff) isnt the hardest thing you did in your life physically speaking. And its maybe hard to believe but most of el cap is "moderate" climbing for honnold.

    The mental aspect of what Alex has achieved is actually performed in the psychological realm, mistaken for the mental realm which are distinct and different from each other. He has mastered climbing in the psychological realm, unattainable by almost every one, which is why he is in a class of one.
