this guy is amazing, all the games i loved growing up have him involved in one way or another, keep doing what your doing Chris
Planescape is one of my favorite games of all time! This was really interesting to watch... Thanks!
I had just finished the last game in Richard Garriott's Ultima series, when fellow enthusiast recommended Planescape Torment to me. What a great game. The story writing, the music and the whole look of the game was just incredible. I think it is an example of how sometimes everything aligns at the right place at the right time and special things happen, which cannot be repeated on purpose.
The stuff about how the Icewind Dale games tie into Planescape is really, really cool. I'm starting a new replay of the series just to catch some of that :)
Great work on your series by the way!
Avellone is an accomplished DM and that came through in his design and execution. Planescape: Torment is the best RPG ever made.
The story is just WOW. This felt like a interactive book to which what most (specially RPG's should be). I hope for a sequel in the future. Who knows....
Seriously one of the best video game writers there has ever been.
Chris i love you you are 1 of the persons who changed my life
What can change a nature of the man? Chris Avellone ofc...
lololol
This is fantastic and very informative! First time I've stumbled across your videos, but as someone who's just started training as a games designer, the opportunity to listen to a top, top designer like Chris Avellone is superb for giving me stuff to think about. I'm a big fan of all of the games I've played that he's worked on, and story wise I think Planescape is outstanding. It's great that you've been able to get this interview, and thanks for sharing.
That music gets me everytime

Good sir, I wish to inform you of the present situation I now find myself in, in which my journal has been brought forward to a current state.
As always an Awesome video, and amazed at the people you get to interview, not even some of the big names in the games industry can get these people, and still blows my mind more people don't view your videos.
Thanks for the new Matt Chat, awesome!
PS:T is still one of my favourite games. Unique in the sense that the sheer amount of dialogue you could dive into will NEVER be done again in game. Same goes for the dialogue options available. I understand why games nowadays become so simplistic in that department as to speed up game development. But I really miss that.
im still working on this one but its easy to see why it is one of the greatest of all time. this is a must play for any true rpg fan. the unorthadox approach is something that really makes you think when in the different situations that the game throws at you. some of the dialog is just hilarious.
I'm actually going to experience Planescape Torment for the first time this week. Can't wait for it to come in.
great stuff
did he really just say fallout was better than pst?? i fukkin love fallout but nothing comes close to planescape
With the higher res mod this game becomes truly something else.
Holy hell, Planescape Torment has a sequel in Kickstarter called : Torment: Tides of Numenera.
If you care, support it, its about time to get an actual RPG again.
Planescape is on mobile now, I would love to see Fallout on mobile now.
Always Impressive Matt! Good enough for TV, if not better…lol.
@blacklily8 That makes two of us. Every now and then a game is just too tempting to wait for though.
@blacklily8 I share your hopes! I would love to see another game from Chris Avellone's hand, which reaches the hights of Planescape Torment!
Yea i know, thats why i call it "spiritual sequel" normally, i just didnt write it in the short comment.
And i am thrilled to see some more details of the game, maybe we get a Planescape Torment "Re-Release" for tablets in the meantime ^^
Completely different games, with completely different focuses, they cannot be compared. PST was story and character driven, which was accomplished by making the game quite linear. Fallout was not about story but about setting, the only story "block" in Fallout is getting past The Master to get the Water Chip. Apart from that you are free to completely explore every area in the game right from the start, even the most dangerous areas.
The end cinematic of PST doesn't give anything away from the game. It only means something if you've been throught the story.
@marcusmalone I'm replaying it on win7 with all mods. works great.
damnit, ive felt an urge to go and loog for my p:t 4 cd edition :o
Not until you know the context, and you don't know it at least 75% through the game.
It's not a sequel, it's just a game done with the spirit of torment in mind. That was good enough for me though.
There are many open world games, and ones where you dictate how you go about finishing the missions. Not many with a story as great, or dialogue as opened as in Planescape: Torment.
lol this is better than Fallout
Morte has more attitude than any other character in video games.
@enkephalin07 thanks for posting that... or I woulda watched it (and I'm about to try this for the first time :P)
Anyone know whether or not Planescape works on Windows 7?
@blacklily8 The latter is taking a bit of a beating in the press. All reviewers are praising the game in terms of narrative etc. No doubt your mate played a big role in these areas.
Yeah I think so too.
I loved fallout, but it certainly didn't turn out better than this.
don't wait too long. at some point the prices start going up again.
i preefer Fallout somehow... i dunno, maybe it's because i preefer the post apocalyptic.
That's a hell of a spoiler, playing the end cinematic.
If you've never played the game and have no idea of any of the context, and considering it contains no information besides an echo of a line first spoken at the very beginning and repeated throughout, is it really a spoiler?
FNV had the same amount of bugs F3 did.
The Fallout are rally good but PST is totally unique!
Planescape: Torment is my least favorite in terms of gameplay, but when it came to graphics and narrative it's probably their masterpiece.
@ 09:05 my God, is that actually Ravel?
One good life. An extraordinary life. What levy must be paid for such a thing?
@marcusmalone I've heard there are unofficial mods for it. Don't quote me on it though.
'Fallout 3 with more cool stuff in it'. Jesus H. BRING IT ON! I heard that with New Vegas the devs are bringing the Bethesda entries more into line with the old Black Isle Fallouts. Good news to me. Should be good news to you also Matt, hey?
Nice job. Can't wait for Fallout New Vegas.
@Jacesfaces Yeah I would say too good for TV ... most TV in my opinion is not worth anyone's time.
What do you mean even? Of course it is, this here's one of the best stories ever made in any type of media. As good as the Fallout games are, they have nothing on Planescape: Torment. Baldur's Gate can't even compare, and it beats Fallout by a long shot.
i guess it's the overall quality, which in fallout is very solid in every aspect
@HeadShotGameReviews played them all -.-
FNV was the buggiest game I've ever played on release.Plus it was basically F3,some minor improvements, in a different setting. That's probably why it scored lower than F3.
If he doesnt put Ravel in the new Tides of Numenera game i will hit him with a shoe (Ofcourse he cant name it Ravel, but we sure will find clues).
Numenera happens in a totally different settings and place.
I dont expect anything from the original game.
Thats especially why putting something in it would be cool, as you dont suspect it, but its so easy to do so.
Its not like you need something big, tiny hints and text phrases will totally lit that fire and that would allready make it.
ThisNameIsBanned Knights of the Old Republic 2 had Ravel in it without most people noticing.
Okay, so then it's time for you to hit him with a shoe. Don't forget to get it on video. ;)
You say to track down the game, but don't tell anyone where. For those that don't know it was rereleased last year. You can buy it online at gogamer.com for $20 USD
That guy has the most beautiful curls ive ever seen on a man
OMG!111 this explains why every chick in KOTORII is blind!
I thought Torment was leagues better than Fallout.
Fallout better than PST? What the hell?
much better than fallout one, slightly better than fallout two
"Fallout 1 turned out better."
:I
ANY RPG is a stupid hack n slash with zero plot value in comparison with PT
Earthbound?
didn't play, i ll check later
well not proper game that you download, but i really loved mardek :D too bad 3rd was done in a rush and 4th aint coming anytime soon.. :(
The Witcher wasn't bad (but then it's loosely based on a series of books/short stories), deals with a lot of moral and philosophical themes. The 90's was the apex of CRPGs and adventure games. Almost everything since then has been dumbed down for casual gamers with short attention spans.
zopiclone199
first DA was good too. But what is Morrigan in comparison with Ignus, or Alistair in comparison with Dak'kon.
There are good ones these days, but definitely far away from what it used to be
You just spoiled it, somebody that hasn't played wouldn't know.
Proud of yourself ?
well if you didn't played the game you would probably not think its from the end of the game lol - your somment spoils more than actual video xD
@HeadShotGameReviews bullshit.
so he just took mainstream ideas and turned them into absurd reversals of themselves
and he repeated the same character concept again and again and again
ok
That's Planescape: Torment. Deviation and weirdness for its own sake at the expense of solid storytelling, with lots of adolescent emo stuff thrown into the mix for good measure. And everything is very much in your face. There are plenty of stories who uses a traditional backdrop but with plenty of innovation at a more subtle level, but Planescape: Torment is the opposite: crude and in your face, it's screams at you LOOK AT THIS WEIRD AND CREATIVE SHIT, OHH YEAHHH. Like an adolescent. Or at least that's what I'd say if I want to focus on the negative, but there are good elements in the game too.
i thought you were praising the game until i read the last sentence
