When I was at the Univ of Vermont, I was the blues DJ for the school's 50,000 watt radio station, WRUV. I was Mr. Mood and played the blues, mostly on vinyl. CDs were just starting to come in. My shows included Magic Slim, Magic Sam, Albert King, Freddy King, BB King, Sonny Boy Williamson I, Sony Boy II, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Big Mama Thorton, Hound Dog Taylor (who was born with 6 fingers on each hand), Paul Butterfield, Junior Wells, Sonny Terry, James Cotton, Johnny Winter, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Clapton, Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Roy Buchanan, and hundreds more.

If you wish to continue to explore the blues and connect the old school with the modern era, SRV did a TV appearance with Albert King, a legend of the genre and they produced an album from that meeting. Albert didn't know who Stevie was but two songs in, he realized that he was for real.

Those Dead-head kids that came to see The Allmann Bros. didn't expect Albert Collins. They had no idea. He took his 100ft guitar cable and walked out deep into the audience, still tearing it up on the guitar. They were in AWW! You gotta do something nice, live, and uptempo. Maybe Frosty?

T-Bone Walker is another one of the great Texas bluesmen. Listen to "T-Bone Shuffle" for a hint of where Chuck Berry picked up some of his licks, and of course, T-Bone's oft-covered "Stormy Monday", then go back a generation to "Black Snake Moan" by Blind Lemon Jefferson, father of Texas blues . Then you've got Louisiana blues which splits off into a New Orleans jazzy branch (you've got to hear Professor Longhair's "Tipitina") and an earthier one flowing through bayous and swamps (one such is Robert 'Pete' Williams "I've Grown So Ugly"). In addition to the delta, head off northeast to the Mississippi hill country for some Junior Kimbrough "Meet Me in the City" and R.L. Burnside "See My Jumper Hanging On the Line", then further still into Tennessee to find Sleepy John Estes and "The Girl I Love, She Got Long, Curly Hair". Don't think you've ever heard anything by Ry Cooder, and his interpretation of this Sleepy John Estes tune, "Goin' to Brownsville" is a keeper.

There have been some great headliners like James Brown, but the few times I went there was always a few small stages with old men and sometimes women we’d never heard of playing Delta blues. Wonderful! However, I'm still waiting for the King of the Delta Blues himself to appear on this channel, the man who inspired The Stones, ZZ Top, Zeppelin and many more bands, the legend who sold his soul at the crossroads to become the greatest Blues guitarist in the world, then died young, poisoned by the jealous husband of a lover, Robert Johnson!!
"Cross Road Blues" "Sweet Home Chicago" "Devil On My Trail" "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom" and many more great songs, just Johnson and his guitar, recorded in a hotel room by some guys who made him famous after his death. The last song SRV ever played was "Sweet Home Chicago."
He has a unique playing style and voice, but I believe you will love him, guys. ❤✌

Sweet Blues from 2 men who didn't really like each other but somehow managed to produce some of the warmest acoustic blues out there. In 1967 they were the rreason I started playing guitar and a college friend started playing harmonnica. Loved Sonny and Brownie but my own guitar inspiration was a mixture of Brownie and Lightnin' with a smattering of Robert Johnson. The next year we took over the college folk club and began to introduce some blues into the mix, mostly ourselves because nobody else was playing blues at that college. We were on a mission. We managed to grab Son House and Juke Boy Bonner at different times to come and play for us when they were touring Britain. Happy days.

Please try Howlin’ Wolf next! He’s considered as one of the blues men who introduced Electric guitars to Delta Blues. I would recommend ‘Built for Comfort’ as it’s a bit of fun as a song title. Howlin’ Wolf, (Chester Arthur Burnett), is mostly known for the songs Smokestack Lightnin’ and Killing Floor but he’s a brilliant Bluesman in any of his songs.
Others great choices could be Louis Jordan - Saturday Night Fish Fry or Koko Taylor - Wang Dang Doodle.

Said it before, I’ll say it gain. T-Bone Walker. The first man to record blues on an electric guitar, like his friend Charlie Christian did in jazz. His Stormy Monday is a classic, but also check out I Wanna See My Baby.

Oh and T-Bone Walker at the Philharmonic on YT is also a must and T-Bone is very important for electric blues as the inspiration/hero for BB King, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix etc

Sticking with the blues, you need to check out Koko Taylor. My favorites are "Wang Dang Doodle" and "That's Why I'm Crying".

Thanks for this! Great song. Great reaction. Now you need to listen to some early bottleneck (a slide guitar style) blues. One of the early influences was Blind Willie Johnson, also from Texas. I recommend God Moves on the Water from 1929. It is a song about the Titanic. Alternatively you could try the first song he recorded - Nobody's Fault But Mine from 1927. You have reacted to Led Zeppelin's cover. There is no known video of him playing, so it os not known exactly how he made the guitar sound like that. What I do know is you will enjoy it.

The blues guitar guy, Howlin Wolf did an album with the song Little Red Rooster (and that may be the album name too). Anyway, there's a minute long cut on the album where Howlin Wolf is teaching a young Eric Clapton some blues riffs. Enjoy!

Rory Gallagher is a guitarist you guys should look into! Catch his song "A Million Miles Away" and his rockin' side of "Shadow Play" - all LIVE, please! I suggest from 1979 especially!

This is bourbon sippin’ music right here now! I can just picture Lightnin and the harmonica player sitting on the front porch with a jug between them.
Check out the great old blues man John Lee Hooker and Van Morrison on Van’s classic song Gloria. THE best rendition of that often covered song EVER!!! (make sure to have your bourbon handy)

You should check out John Lee Hooker another blues man who got his start in 40's from Mississippi. Some of his songs are boogie chillen’, crawling king snake, boom boom, one bourbon, one scotch, one beer, I’m in the mood (solo or with bonnie raitt), dimples, mr. lucky (w/robert cray).
