  • Consumer Decision Making is the process that people go through to decide what to buy. It includes recognizing a problem, looking for information, weighing the pros and cons of different options, making a choice, and evaluating the purchase afterward.
What are the types of Consumer Decisions?
There are three main types of choices that consumers make:
Routinized Response - This is the kind of decision where you don't really have to think much about it.
Limited Problem Solving - This type of purchase decision involves a little more thinking or a little more consideration.
Extensive Problem Solving: This is when we're trying to decide what to buy and we're going to think about it for a long time.
    What is a Routinized Response?
This is the kind of choice that doesn't require a lot of thought. In other words, it's a habit. When we decide to buy something without going through the buyer decision-making process, this is called an impulsive purchase. In most cases, it means that we just keep doing what we did before. Think about going to the store every week and getting the same type or brand of food. You do this all the time instead of looking for other options and comparing them.
    What is Limited Problem Solving?
When making this kind of purchase choice, you need to give it a little more thought. Maybe we think about different things when we buy something. We might think about how much to buy. No matter what we think, making this choice or making this purchase will take us more time and work.
What does Extensive Problem Solving mean?
This is when we have to decide what to buy, and we'll spend a lot of time thinking about it. That is, we are going to give it a lot of thought. We might look into a lot of things. We might ask our friends or look at what other customers have said. This is usually how we buy something we have never bought before, something that is very technical, or something very expensive, like a car. Most of the time, this type of choice takes the most time, information, and effort to weigh the options.
