It's true. It's a song you listen to, to finish out the album, or to get to "Harold"! Because you've already heard "Musical Box" and "Hogweed". I've had 'Nursery Cryme" for at least 35 years, and I think I've just read the lyrics at the same I listened to the music, in context, ever. It's brilliant.

The Best Genesis and The First with Phil and Steve on board. Though I love Anthony Phillips( Genesis and Solo ) and John Mayhew wasn’t terrible, the musicianship’s improvement starts to really show and once Selling England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 comes out 2 years later, perfection IMHO is reached.

So there are other people who get it... lol. Not to bring down the sober brilliance of it but the second or third time I tried MDMA as a 15 year old, so 20 years ago I put this song on at a friends house who had subwoofers and incredible speakers and laid with my head between them while it played at such a loud volume, and the bass pedal and mellotron at the end just dissolved my conscious awareness into pure enthousmos. It was remarkable and the mellotron has since evoked the memory of that feeling.

I heard the old man tell his tale:
    Tinker, alone within a storm,
And losing hope he clears the leaves beneath a tree,
    Seven stones
    Lay on the ground.
Within the seventh house a friend was found.
And the changes of no consequence will pick up the reins from nowhere.
Sailors, in peril on the sea,
Amongst the waves a rock looms nearer, and not yet seen.
    They see a gull
    Flying by.
The Captain turns the boat and he asks not why.
And the changes of no consequence will pick up the reins from nowhere.
    Nowhere.
Despair that tires the world brings the old man laughter.
The laughter of the world only grieves him,
    Believe him,
The old man's guide is chance.
I heard the old man tell his tale:
Farmer, who knows not when to sow,
Consults the old man clutching money in his hand.
    And with a shrug,
    The old man smiled,
Took the money, left the farmer wild.
And the changes of no consequence will pick up the reins from nowhere.
    Nowhere.
Despair that tires the world brings the old man laughter.
The laughter of the world only grieves him, believe him,
The old man's guide is chance

@@evanglicanism What about Mad Man Moon as a good song to listen to for newbies to prog? Carpet Crawlers is good, but I always loved that Beautiful song from TOTT.

@@littlestevey4172 I'd say it depends on the listener and how open they are to classical influences. That song's a bit less poppy and a little more romantic, but it's definitely better than trying to make a prog fan out of someone by playing them Karn Evil 9! People can always connect to a good melody, and imo, of all the major prog bands, Genesis was best at doing that.

Great song, amazing arrangement excellent job of keyboards and guitar chords, emotional expressive vocal but the drums is an another conception, Phil Collins using a lot of his repertoire of fills and rolls, subtle percussive performance on snare and cymbals, to me the drums is the high point on the arrangement of this composition despite the fact that the other instruments make fantastic and complex arrangements.

@ Allistar* I am not aware of any live version of this song by Genesis. Though, I would need to ask the expert located where I am currently residing, in Maryland, USA. This stated, there is a tribute band known as 'The Musical Box', you may know of already. I heard them perform this live and their rendition of this song was respectable.
