I bought this album when it came out in 1972. In England ,at that time, there were few ways to get to hear new album based music, a couple of "pirate " radio stations, and Radio 1, which played chart singles. There was only 3 TV channels, the only music programmes being Top of the Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test, whid did play new bands. I read about Genesis in the NME, a music paper, reporting this very strange prog band so I went to my local Boots, a Chemist store in England, which also sold records. I asked to hear this album, not sure what to expect, so ,sat in a listening booth, I heard about 2 minutes of Watcher of the Skies, the opening track. That was enough for me, so bought the LP for £2.15.and set off to play at home, on my Hitachi Music Centre. Side 1 was pretty amazing, I was just getting into Yes and Floyd at the time, but I was'nt prepared for side 2. An absolute masterpiece which I still play today, in my old age !! I like coming onto TH-cam and checking out younger peoples reaction to these old songs,..it's great to see them enjoying it now, as I did ,nearly 50 years ago. This music will live for ever. Thank you Genesis.
A little side note I just thought of. In 1972, in my first job, I was earning £10 a week, so £2.15 was quite an outlay for an unknown band.

I got into Genesis about 5 years later. Back in the 70's the only way that you would discover new music is either by listening to the radio, or by word of mouth. So, it all depended on the radio stations that you listened to and the friends that you had.
My first album of Genesis was Seconds Out that was recommended to me by a friend. I also heard a BBC session of Genesis performing Musical Box and Stagnation. I was sold!
My second purchase was Foxtrot. I will never forget that first time that I listened to the album. It was like I was introduced to a whole new world of music.
To this day, Foxtrot is and extra special album. Still probably their finest output.
I have introduced my son to this album and it stands out as one of his favourites. He is 22.
Some music was meant to live forever.
Italy. First mid 80's summer. Me and my brother in the back of my parents car playing while going out for holidays and listening a lot of different kind of music from my father's cassettes, things like Dire Straits, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd.....and of course..Genesis's "Selling England by the Pound". I was just between 5 and 7, maybe 8yo. So i was already pretty addicted to good music, thanks to my father and later my uncle too.
Years later, winter of 1998. With the money of my first true job and my first true paycheck i started to buy all the Genesis albums till "Seconds Out". Yes, I almost spent a good part of my 1st paycheck in Genesis. And proud of it ahaha 🤣👍
And rest is history....and a lot, A LOT of Genesis masterpiece music listening and guitar playing. That's my little contribution in our history wonderfully colored by Genesis and their unparalleled Art, Sir John B. Thnx for sharing your amazing story to us and wish you the best in life. Oh, i've too a little side [ehmm..weird] story to add. My father's "Selling England by the Pound" copy cassette had just 50 or 60% of 'The Battle of Epping Forest' due to the end of A side. The B side of the cassette was already starting with 'Firth Of Fifth'. So, basically, i learnd and heard the full song only later, around 1995 from the original friend's vinyl. Still rememb the emotions and face expression like, just to make an example, the "What the fuck ?!?" from your beloved Benny Hill expression ! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
A local FM rock station plays the full 23 minutes of Supper's Ready every Easter.🙏✝😇
And it's a appropriate time to play it . It's about Holy communion . The Satanic plans . The false and anti Christ . the false heaven . The passion and death of Christ . The last battle . The Resurrection and victory of Christ and followers . And the New Jerusalem. It's a modern day version of The Dream of Gerontious .

Is it normal to be that OBSSESSED with a song's outro? Sometimes I feel that I listen to the whole Foxtrot only for that epic ending of Supper's Ready. Dude, one of the most exciting epics in all progressive rock history, hands down.
You aren't the only one. Foxtrot is laid out perfectly, the sequencing of the songs build up in intensity until the very end. Not a wasted minute on the album (you know it's good when Tony Banks feels the same way). I know the boys in the band didn't care for the album artwork, but the finale of Supper's Ready sounds the way the ocean on the front cover looks. The album is like the boys arrive in a mellotron UFO, and leave in a hail of harmonized guitar and tapping to ascend to the New Jerusalem... and, just like many masterpiece albums, the ending is the perfect segue to start it all again from the beginning...
There are some parts of this masterpiece (same on Firth of Firth) that still makes me emotional, funny is that Genesis are far from being my favourite group , but "Foxtrot" and "Selling England..." are simply immortal gems.

The end is unbelievable - you want it to go on forever. Not sure if I 'get' all of Supper's Ready, but by the end, it doesn't matter anymore - you feel like you're on an escalator to heaven.

The first album I ever got by these guys at 14 , well actually at 16 or 17 was the LAMB.....had read bout Genesis for years in circus magazine, I'm 62 now , funny how that works , to this day I still think the LAMB , is the best, but this album is really incredible, I mean INCREDIBLE as is any of their older stuff nursery cryme , if I spelled that correct? I love GENESIS, and had my one chance shot to see them in 78 in Atlanta , GA......on the AND THEN THERE WERE THREE TOUR, whom I got a friend of mine to take me their, he bitched the whole way from AUGUSTA to ATLANTA.....to this day he will tell you it was the best concert he has ever seen, they were so amazing, and still doing quite a bit of the Gabriel era which I truly love....my favorite album ( Phil era) no doubt is AND THEN THERE WERE THREE....I was 18, maybe it's the music , the time of life, my first love, my new car, but I have got laid in my new car to AND THEN THERE WERE THREE, over and over and over...youth ,the best music ever, I truly thank my LORD and SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST.....for letting me walk the earth in this great era of the greatest music ever, really don't think this earth , people here long after we exit will ever hear, see anything like the magical music we all came up with, going back from start, jazz, Benny Goodman to what somewhere in 2000? This song singlehandedly changed my life and music taste forever. Listening to it at 16 years old in 2012 was like opening my eyes for the first time. The best thing is, every time I listen to it, it's just as good as I remember.
When listening to Supper's Ready, I often wonder how any one small group of musicians could create something as powerful as this without knowing beforehand what a masterpiece it would become. I mean, these guys were young when they wrote and produced this song. How could they - without the benefit of hindsight - have put a song together this varied, wondrous, and complete? So many years on, and even soon after its release, we came to know Supper's Ready as a masterpiece of prog rock. But I can't help but wonder if they knew at the time what their efforts would result in as a completed work. How fertile were their minds? Was it just another day at work for them? You know, same shit, different day? Or did they realise they were creating something superlative that we would come to know as something so special that stands high as a work of perfection into the 21st century? A song that would stand the test of time and become a prog classic? When recording it, did they realise how small snippets buried so briefly within the whole, such as "isn't it" and "a flower?" would stand immortal? Or then, did they simply write whatever came to mind and record what sounded good? Who knows? It might simply have been just a spoonful of miracle in the end. So, I am left here all alone to ponder these imponderables. But then having heard the wonder of Genesis and asked these questions, I remain a guaranteed eternal sanctuary fan atop a plateau of green grass and trees full of life. But then, why not? After all I am just Narcissus, a tiny flower. And the moral to this story? Well, I'll leave it in the mouths of its creator … the frog was a price, the prince was a brick, the brick was an egg, the egg was a bird... enough said... I rest my case.

I was in high school in Charlotte, N.C. USA in the early 70s. We were all into Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull ect. How did we miss this incredible band? Man I’m having a blast catching up!
One of progressive rock's most iconic compositions.
My husband has been a huge Genesis fan and was inspired by Phil Collins’ drumming back in the ‘70’s He kept trying to get me into Genesis, but I stubbornly insisted on staying in the ELP, Rush and Yes cycle. I feel such a fool now (but I won’t tell him that). This is other worldly! I am enthralled! I am so hooked! I’ve listened to this song at least 8 times today.
Classic genesis is great. Take a look at: Selling England By The Pound, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and A Trick Of The Tail. Those are my personal favourites

But they did . They do the same with the classical providers on You Tube. Like Halidon Music and Brilliant Classics . They have even put ads through a meditation I do every day with a Buddhist nun . It's annoying

One good old friend of mine is a musician. In 1973, he lent me Fox trot... so I could discover A MASTERPIECE. I was shocked, angry... It was so different, lyrics were strange. I was aligned to Beatles, CCR, clear hard rock... but what was that! I kept listening and despairing weeks and weeks... And one night ─ ♫.... A FLOWER? IF YOU GO DOWN TO WILLOWFARM... ─ the beauty, the originality of that music and these lyrics rushed into my heart!

Speaking as someone who was brought up on Genesis courtesy of their father, I haven’t heard this song in at least five or six years and my God I forgot that it’s perfection. The transitions are perfect. Going from a subtly psychedelic folk song transitioning to rock anthems, a capella, vaudeville weirdness and all back again. Born in 1989, an indie teen in the 2000s, and Supper’s Ready is one of my favourite songs of all time. Got to be somewhere in the top 100 easily.

I bought this album soon after it came out at my local music store. The owner was friends with professional musicians, so he was always talking about music. I went in and bought the album, I must have been 13ish. The owner complimented me on my taste in music. I walked home feeling 16! Still a fan and married a guy who was also a huge fan.

Welcome to the Genesis classic lineup. Btw, Steve Hackett survived two albums and two world tours after PG, still considered amongst the best, he is the unsung hero in this story.
Nunca é tarde para se descobrir uma boa música amigo. Eu ouvi esta música pela primeira vez hoje. O TH-cam proporciona isso, músicas e bandas que nunca ouvimos nas rádios aqui no Brasil aparecendo para nós. Conheci o progressivo já nós anos 80 quando todos estavam na era "New wave". A rádio Cidade no RJ tinha um programa chamado "Cidade Rock stories" que passava aos domingos, meia-noite. A primeira música de progressivo que ouvi foi Roundabout do Yes. Fiquei em choque! Só tinha ouvido o lado pop do Yes. Em seguida veio "Aqualung " do Jehtro Tull. E descobri que Genesis, Yes e Rush, apesar de fazerem sucesso com o pop oitentista, tinham obras primas no Progressivo. Dali em diante não parei mais de ouvir progressivo.

"Willow Farm", with its "ugly chord sequence", worked as it took the song "into another dimension". Genesis went to the street and picked eight children to record vocals for the song and paid them ten 'bob' (shillings) each. ...
Would be interesting to find these children today. ^^

Genesis with Peter Gabriel was so ahead of its time! And this by far is one of the most creative pieces. I’ve listened to it so many times that it’s note for note word for word happily stuck in my head forever. I’ve always loved Peter Gabriel‘s creativity and I wish the band was able to follow along with it. I know they had big pop hits when Phil Collins switched to lead vocals, but he was awesome on the drums and I wish it stayed the same. When they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they didn’t even include Peter Gabriel! 🤬 What the hell was up with that?!?!
So many years-- decades-- with this gorgeous album. Found it in the mid-80s, after getting into the 'Genesis' album and working my way back. So many high school nights staying up listening to this classic and the others in the dark. Thanks guys.

Lucky you! I've only seen Peter Gabriel at the Echo arena, as it was formerly known, here in Liverpool in 2014, I'd have loved to see/hear genesis in their original line up. Wow.

Definitely, the great masterpiece of music of the 20th century. A musical story that, like the "Four Seasons", contains all climates. And from a soft and acoustic start, after going through all the moods, it culminates in a glorious apogee. Splendid, brilliant, wonderful...
Today I could write this in English, but I intimate feel it would lost all its original sense and sensitivity in other language than my mother tongue. So it goes my homage to one of my favourite bands ever..

Es lo que sentí a los 14 años al poner el vinilo en mi tocadiscos y escuchar, trémulo, los acordes de "Horizons" e inmediatamente la larga magia de "Supper's Ready".
Si puedo describirlo en palabras, sentí que me sumergía en el universo de Charles Dickens, en el David Copperfield que me leía mi abuela gallega por las tardes de estío y siesta en San Justo.
Pero también era el Lewis Carrol de Alicia...¿en Wonderland o en el País del Espejo?
Aún no conocía a Humpty Dumpty.
Pero sentía la bruma, la leyenda marinera...casi podía ver y casi tocar el field inglés. Los ensueños que me transcribía esta música eran inimaginables...
A su vez estaba el ritmo rockero, el mover la cabeza frenéticamente con los beats jazzeros de Phil Collins, o los acordes eléctricos del orfebre Steve Hackett, más los teclados victorianos de Banks.
La voz de Gabriel sonaba grave y sensual, y a su vez El bajo de Rutheford servía de marco a la fantasía, la fábula y la leyenda de campiña inglesa.
Claro que de inglés no sabía más que los aplazos que había empezado a recibir en el colegio de la mano de Mrs. Lafleur, nuestra profesora hippie de la secundaria de Ramos Mejía. Todo era sólo sensibilidad musical, e imaginación. Lo mismo ocurría con Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson...
Para ese entonces sólo conocía a Genesis por haber escuchado "Genesis Live" del vinilo de un amigo hippie del barrio, hoy largamente viviendo en USA. Y por "Riding the Screen" escuchado por la radio una tarde de veredas desde el legendario programa "alternativa" del gran Omar Cerasuolo.
Se inició así mi largo romance con una de las mejores bandas de rock de la historia. Casi nada.
Caramba! Me has dejado impactada! Para mi Genesis forma parte de mi esencia, es una gran parte de mi musica interior, son mis reuerdos, mi niñez, mi adolescencia, es darme cuenta de que, esa musica maravillosa que te llena por dentro y te transporta ya no se hace, ha pasado. El mundo ya no esta preparado para musica de este tipo, solo quieren musica de usar y tirar, consumible, rítmica y con mucho sexo. La imaginacion, la belleza y la sensibilidad no tienen cabida. Es una verdadera lastima... pero yo la sigo disfrutando igual que el primer dia.
No me entiendo mucho espanol, pero yo entiendo lo que te dices. Genesis son más mejor que palabras! :)

They don't have really bad songs, and are still active. They released their last Album in 2018!)

This track is something else. What an EPIC track - there is no other word and the section from about the 20th minute has to be amongst the pinnacles of musical achievement. Listened to this again for the first time in about 40 years and I had forgotten then what this meant to me as a teenager who heard it in the 70s.

First heard on the "Seconds Out," version and on a mono tape recorder which didn't do this track. But then i got a stereo and a Walkman and had this album taped by a good mate of mine around 1984 time. First time i heard this track off that recording I was HOOKED! Couldn't stop playing it for DAYS. And even now when i see a PC keyboard in a public place i have the hankering to type "Suppers Ready = ace," on it. Because it is, ace, it always will be ace and will NEVER get old.
All brilliant musicians, but Steve Hackett's guitar work on this masterpiece is a master class.
