The Wizard of Oz is my ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIE❤!!!!!! I had the VHS, and I played it so much, the ACTUAL tape inside snapped!!!!! So, when DVD'S were invented I bought it. Now I can watch it whenever I want!!!
I’m 64, and I think I have every word of this movie memorized. That doesn’t ever stop me from watching it and enjoying it like it’s the first time. This movie actually became a teaching tool. Nearly 40 years ago, I was substituting in a special ed science class in my first year of teaching (my license was English), and one young lady was having difficulty with learning how matter can change from one form to another. So I asked her if she had ever seen “The Wizard of Oz”. She responded “Of course. Just to be a kid, you have to have seen that movie.” I laughed and said “Okay, so do you remember what happened when Dorothy poured warm water onto the Wicked Witch?” The girl gave the correct answer: “She melted.” I said “Try to think of it that way. You add heat to a solid - the Wicked Witch being the solid - and it turns into a liquid. Add heat to a liquid, it becomes a gas. Repeat that, please.” She did, several times. After that, every time I saw her in the hallway, she would smile and say “Oh, no, I’m MELTING.” Her proctor on the state science test she took later that year told me that the girl said the same thing during the test, so there MUST have been a question about it on the test. She obviously passed, because she graduated in four years. I was proud of my small contribution.
Funny how them workers of the wicked witch were trying to kill Dorothy and her friends but then they hail her when the wicked witch dies. Shows you how loyal they were to the wicked witch
In the original story, the guards were actually under a spell by the witch. Once she melted, they were freed from the spell and that’s why they were so happy
The Winkies were her slaves who, like the Munchkins in the East, they were overjoyed to finally be free. There had been a power struggle going on between the Wizard and the Wicked Witch of the West about who controlled the Winkie Country (i.e., the western part of Oz) which is why the Wizard wanted the witch killed. Read the books by L. Frank Baum.
Very touching scene!! I was at the Senior Center a short time ago, a bunch of us wanted to decide what our favorite and fondest movie was of the past. We all agreed it was the “Wizard Of Oz” !! I have a nice framed photo of them all together on the wall just for memories 😊
@ No, I’m talking truly epic productions. Like the original Avatar, Titanic, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, Pulp Fiction, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and of course classics like Gone with the Wind.
I still find it hilarious that the Wicked Witch of the West is the one they feared the most, but yet to get rid of her, all they had to do was throw water on her. Dorothy is the real OG here. She killed both wicked witches without even trying. 🤣
Possibly one ofthe scariest and most exhilarating chase scenes in movie history, along with the all-time best villain deaths! It saddens me to know what horrible health problems the cast suffered to make this masterpiece. Possibly the greatest quartet of accidental heroes ever put on film, too. So damn good...
I’ve always loved The movie, the Wizard of Oz since I was a child and when I had children, my daughter loved it too I know after reading the book about Judy Garland it says that Margaret Hamilton was a really good friend to her who played the witch on the movie set. This movie will always go on in History Love it ❤😊
When I was little, I would always watch wizard of oz non stop. I’ve always been obsessed with the Ruby slippers, the color Ruby, the hour glass and crystal ball 🔮 still am today 😅
@@HAMF9666 You’re probably right. According Oz historian John Fricke, the witch was originally going to give a much longer and more threatening speech in this scene. But they heavily shortened it to make it less scary for kids. That’s why there’s an abrupt jump cut before she says “The last to go..”
If it was ad-libbed, it was probably during rehearsal. We know Victor Fleming loved a lot of the ad-libs in rehearsals and would tell the actors to "keep it in!".
Transported to a surreal landscape, a young girl kills the first person she meets and then teams up with three strangers to kill again. -Rick Polito Not only that, but after her first kill, this young girl loots the body. still blown away by how they did that Witch melting scene in the one shot. Im assuming there was some trapdoor under the floor and Hamilton(the witch) was being lowered very slowly while also crouching giving the illusion of falling through the floor. but it just looks seamless and its cleverly covered by the black costume and hat. i just wonder how they did that so well
When I was married to my first wife, I remembered this movie. And when that witch started yelling at me, I threw a bucket of water on her, remembering what Dorothy did. But it didn’t work. She just got a towel and wiped herself off and then filed for divorce. What a world, what a world !
@ This is kind of fun though. Every time someone asked me what my ex-wife did for a living I tell them she was an actress. And they say really? And I say yeah, she was in that movie the Wizard of Oz they’re still trying to get that house off of her…..
I just LOVED it as a kid when the scarecrow grabs the axe and cuts the chandelier rope! That and when the Cowardly Lion dove out the window. Cool stuff, still love it! Top Ten in my favorite movies.
I think it's because we know some version of The Wizard of Oz events happen in Wicked, it's just left vague as to the exact details. For all we know it could have happened nearly beat-for-beat like the 1939 movie with some changes (like the color of the slippers), and because this movie was the biggest Oz adaptation before Wicked - and one of the most well-known films of all time - it's no surprise people link the two even if they are different adaptations.
For not having a brain, the scarecrow did a smart thing by using the tinman’s axe to bring down that chandelier on top of the witch’s army! He thought fast in a stressful situation. He DOES have a brain, he just needed to use it.
Always thought, even without courage, couldnt the lion have taken out so many of them? I mean...he's a lion afterall, with huge sharp teeth and claws and great strength. And the tin man seems pretty good with that ax...
The Lion already had courage, and if it had come to the point, he would have fought; after all, he'd already eaten the three soldiers who jumped him and the other two.
The soldiers all have spears and are locked onto them, any attempt at fighting back like that would've been met with long ranged stabbing, they weren't cowards for not fighting, they were smart not wasting their lives in a foolish attempt to act bravely
Still aint made a witch creepier than her....scarier, sure, but OZ it self is creepy, whole place fucced up. Flying monkeys and shit, can you imagine if Caesar and his crew could fly.
It was all the plan to fake her death. If we look at this thru the lens of Wicked, Elphaba torched Fiyero so Dorothy would splash the water on him, putting out the fire and “melting” her.
Wasn’t it all an act? Like she doesn’t actually melt there was a hole in the floor. And her and scarecrow run off to be together once everyone thinks she’s dead
@@themastertactician869 Yes, in the letter Fiyero sends to Elphaba right before For Good, it actually had the plan for how they’re gonna fake her death. But Elphaba made it out to seem as if Fiyero died
Dorothy was incredibly resourceful, being under such pressure, with her life on the line, seeking a bucket of water and using it to save her friend's life. Seriously, this movie has a lot to say about friendship. and the love these four diverse "people" had for each other. The sad thing is the life Judy Garland led afterwards. I won't necessarily blame it on the studio, or her parents. I wasn't there. It's just sad. Hopefully she's in a better place now. Don't bother posting how the cast didn"t get along with Judy Garland. I've heard that, and I've also heard different versions. That has nothing to do with the story itself.
Has anyone tried that Wizard of Oz, with The Dark side of the Moon synchronizing already? They say start the CD after the 2nd or last roar of the lion at the beginning of the movie.
The making of OZ its a horror in itself... The wicked witch here isn't the same character from Wicked, this one's evil and deserves her demise, the from Wicked is a good person who's fate is unfortunate
Not to mention that all life depends on water. The Wicked Witch was a figure of death. The point, here, is this: If water is symbolic of life, and if the Wicked Witch is symbolic of death-then it’s no small wonder that she melted away in her fatal reaction to water.
i always assumed that the bucket of water (presumably one of several) was kept there for the dousing of the many torches around the castle turrets. while the witch of course would never handle it, she could eave it for the winkies to do.
@ That’s correct-it was there for the dousing of torches, and of any accident fires that could pop up and threaten to destroy any part of the castle. Dorothy used it to help her friend, the Scarecrow, when he was set on fire-and it worked, she actually did save him-but the rest of that water was sloshed onto the witch. No pun intended, but the Wicked Witch ended up a victim of “friendly fire.”

She has no name it's just the Wicked Witch of the West. Stop shoving that crap into L Frank Baums work.
ZARDOZ SPEAKS TO YOU!!!!
Bruh if she was that susceptible to water why would she make it so accessible 💀
apparently her staff hated her so they helped out
Well, it was in the book.
Before …
Doom
Joker
The ghostly trio
And the gremlins there was the witch who said a death quote.
It’s always surprising that the Winkies can talk the whole time and they didn’t say anything until after the Wicked Witch melted.
What would they have said?
I always thought the audio was from a live report from Three Mile Island...
Phew that's too close
2:37 The army’s spears came down at the same time the witch melted!
Anyone that saw it as a kid was scared to death!😮
