US women’s team refuse to sing national anthem before World Cup draw with Netherlands

- The US women’s national team has once again risked the ire of the American public after more than half of the team refused to sing the national anthem before their World Cup group game against the Netherlands in Wellington.
Later, in a game anticipated for months - a repeat of the 2019 World Cup final - the Dutch held the star-studded world champions to a 1-1 draw.
The silent “protest” was labelled “embarrassing” and “disrespectful” by one prominent pundit in the States and also drew strong criticism on social media, with some accusing members of the US women’s squad of failing to be patriotic enough on the global stage.

That last player at the end of the line is singing her heart out. She was brought up the right way. Her teammates are trash.
Most of the team showed proper respect, this entire controversy is trash. Look at the US Mens' baseball team in the World Classic. Most of them showed some respect but none of them sang. Yet nothing is said about them.
@@Karnakthemagnificent I think the problem is Rapinoe, ever the attention-seeker, made it an issue by going out of her way to state why she wasn't going to sing the anthem. If she just shut her mouth and stood respectfully there would be no outrage.
@@joet7136 BTW - the playing of the Anthem with all of the players mandated to be on the field is a recent thing, it started in earnest after 9/11. Prior to that, it was not a regular part of every sporting event like it is now.

Interesting. I have never understood why Americans do that - must try to find its origins. A definite cultural difference; the idea of making such a gesture to my national anthem (which I would sing) is alien to me; we simply do not do that here. Easy enough. Have them sign an ethics and respect agreement to stay on the team. The agreement includes a no protest clause while in any stadium. Violation of the agreement will result in punishment ranging from a fine to being banned from the team.
