The German military band is famous for mastering the anthem of any country it is required to play. They regard every anthem as being as important as their own, and that’s why their version is the best in my opinion.

The Germans make it sound majestic like when I’m reality it should sound like how the us plays it makes it sound more fierce

    • @OhDasGood
      @OhDasGood 2 ปีที่แล้ว +173

@@TripleJay454 I disagree. The star spangled banner was a poem written about the majestic view of the flag Francis Scott key saw prevailing over fort McHenry after the battle of Baltimore Harbor. Had our national anthem been the Stars and Stripes forever (which I believe it should have been) I would agree with you.

As a German musician (not in the Military though) I am a little bit proud that so many people like the German version the best. But to be fair it has by far the best recording quality (all the others are extremely compressed) which can have a huge effect on hpw much you like a song.

A note on the pictures, when the German music corps plays the US anthem. You can see that the then Federal President Joachim Gauck can hardly hold back his emotion. It is important to know that Joachim Gauck was a pastor in the former GDR before reunification 1991 and belonged to the civil rights movement. He was not a "professional politician," and he certainly never dreamed that he would one day receive the U.S. president in Berlin as the highest representative of the Federal Republic of Germany (!). Incidentally, he deliberately refused to meet with Russian President Putin during his time in office. He was criticized for that at the time. President Gauck probably knew exactly why. And he was right!

Germany's was undoubtedly the best. Not surprised though. Germany is the country of legendary Classical orchestral composers like Bach and Beethoven, who have given major contributions in paving the way how orchestras are arranged and played today. Germany is the best because it simply follows its classical musical traditions seriously even today.
While Saudi Arabia and Syria probably sound less good because orchestral music isn't their indigenous musical culture. If instead of these western instruments like drums and trumpets, they were allowed to play their own indigenous oriental instruments, they would've probably done a better job.

My favorites were the American and the German versions for different reasons. Germany played it perfectly, beautiful tone, tempo was spot on, and phrasing was great. The American version I love the balance of instruments and how you can hear every single part cut through. The tempo was too fast for my taste though and the phrasing was a little off but still not bad. I’ve got heritage from both the US and Germany so I’m glad to see these do well.

I would say the States had the most musicality in their rendition. The french one would have been great if the audio compression wasn't horrendous.
Right after the States, I'd have to give it to Germany. The Germans usually have a high caliber of musicians.

The US did obviously very well, but I think the tempo was a bit off and it lacked pronunciation and expression.

I agree with you! I’m a little surprised at the love shown to the Germans here. Their “rockets’ red glare” bit was lovely, no doubt; but the beginning was a mess, and I found some parts too slow. The US band was so crisp, start to finish, and while it was a bit fast, they understood that they were not in a concert hall. I bet the presidents who are standing around listening to these appreciate brevity. It was respectful, but understood it was not the main attraction. The German one was a little too rich, in my opinion, for a situation that should be more business-like. I guess it goes to show that if you finish strong no one will remember how you started!

Here’s my two cents worth, not that anyone is even going to see this, let alone care haha
My background - I’m a music major from Australia studying in the US. I’ve been playing in wind bands for a while and like to think I’m pretty decent at it.
I’m not going to try to rate them because there are too many other things that vary between the performances - sound quality / mic placement, arrangement, background noise, the list goes on.
America - I quite like the faster tempo and the balance in the ensemble. A bit less keen on the dynamics in measures 17-24 - I prefer it when that section starts quieter so they can crescendo into the last bit.
Germany - exactly what I expected from Germany. Pin point precision, good balance, stone cold. I feel like it was let down by the arrangement though. Some of the chord voicing just felt a bit over egged, and the parallel thirds at 2:01 ish don’t sound right at all. Also why do they play around with the tempo so much?
China - good college band level. Nice to hear prominent saxes but could have used more melody. This could have been a mic placement thing to be fair. Not impressed by the percussionist playing about a quarter of a beat behind.
Russia - good high school band level. Scruffy and not in tune but nice tempo.
UK - my personal favourite. Almost flawless timing and tuning, and I got chills from their crescendo into “oh say does that”. The low brass were clearly enjoying it, but not to the extent that it drowned out the melody. Woefully let down by recording quality but I can tell they played well.
France - full of spirit. I wish we got more of it. Shame about intonation
India - the start made me nervous but they warmed up into it. Another potentially decent performance ruined by dodgy audio.
Philippines - US anthem at UK anthem tempo. Not terrible apart from that. I liked their arrangement - it’s slightly different in the middle.
Syria - I’m at a bit of a loss here. I get that Syria might not have much of a tradition of this kind of military band and diplomatic considerations are never far away, but… wow. First step would be to sort out balance - that would help a whole lot.
Saudi Arabia - very wayward tuning and crying out for some proper bass. There’s only so much you can do with a tenor sax in that register. Rhythm surprisingly on point.

it’s neat how you can hear counties traditions kinda peak through, for instance Chinas band is very woodwind heavy, the oboe and clarinet (fun fact: the clarinet is tuned the same as a Bflat trumpet, they can play eachothers music) were very prominent where the brass would be. sounded very nice
EDIT: ik we’re past this but it’s kinda ironic seeing the UK play The Star Spangled Banner, a song that was written during a war with the US

Saxophones are heard almost throughout China's version, and barely heard the Trumpets. On the other hand, Germany was basically the opposite of China as it was rather brass heavy, thus slightly louder than China's version with the Trumpets, Trombones, and Tubas being more prominent in the German rendition.

I'd say the German version was the best, followed by England and then the US (slightly too fast and had variable tempo/lag on phrasing). Oddly the Philippines version sounded pretty decent, except that it was too slow. Would have been more interesting to have a HQ version of all the countries, since that will contribute to perception.
