    Zoetropes were my first introduction to animation, and I love the way they spin up. In this tutorial we're going to look at creating this 3d scene, working up some camera motion, and trick the camera into seeing an optical illusion. We'll be talking about 3d layers, cameras, 3d movement, plenty of little expressions, and some maths. I hope you enjoy this little project and it inspires you to make some cool stuff.

    AE has a built-in `timeToFrames` function. Stuff like this is also *way* easier if you just set the default time encoding to frames instead of SMTPE - simply cmd-click or ctrl-click the timecode in the upper-left corner of the timeline.

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, timeToFrames can get you here too. I tend to use the method described here only because the frame rate of the comp we're putting the expression on is often different from the comp we're using the expression in. And since people might be using an animation holder of any frame rate, taking out the step of specifying which frame rate we're using keeps the method a little less fiddly when making future changes. I do love the tips though. I had debated getting into the time units stuff but ended up dumping it to keep the length down.

    Hello Evans, nice tutorial as always, loved the animation but you were quite fast so I couldn't follow the tutorial as well as I wanted to, It could also be because I am still trying to figure my way around animation. What steps can I take to understand expressions and animating in After Effects?
    Thanks.

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. I would say this tutorial is in more of an intermediate skill level. We're getting into niche application of concepts. To get a firm foundation on expressions I would start small. Understanding the the grammar and syntax is great. And doing small uses that can build underststanding of what's happening and why. There are a few tutorials on this channel that are very much just explaining expressions concepts. Maybe I should make a playlist of those. As for animation, it's mostly down to keyframes on properties that change values over time. There are some more basic tutorials on here, but It might be worth looking into a formal course like School of Motion if you prefer a more structured approach.
      I hope that helps.

    Little question out of curiousity. What is the advantage of using "var i =index -1 ... " instead of just referencing the index-1?
    Wouldn't it have the same result in this case plus you would save some lines of code thus saving some performance?

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tend to use variables in code to keep things organized and help teach the concepts more clearly. But you could certainly not use variables if you desire.

    @balavenkatesan2918 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can the speed change as you adjust the splines in the speed graph editor? I used a 24 frame animation so i figured based on the equation that should be 360 degrees per second. I'm noticing the frames flicker a bit as the zoetrope moves. Is that a speed issue or could that be because the animation I used is hand drawn frame by frame?

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends. Your zoetrope has 24 frame, but how many frames per second is the comp where the rotation is happening? That's an important number too.

    • @balavenkatesan2918

    I had an issue with the layer reference in the expression: var i = this layer.index-1.....
    the error was that it had not defined what layer it was referring to in "this layer"
    the solution i found was to use the pickwhip to select the layer to set the definition correctly.
    but im running into an issue with the expression for the number counter in the corner. i cant figure out how to define "this comp"
    The exact error I'm getting is "math is not defined"
    Do you have any idea how to fix this error?

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The copy and paste of the rotation property? We're letting an expression control how rotated each thing is. And each rotation is being defined by the layer's index value to they're automatically rotated to the correct angle for our needs.
      Does that make sense?

    • @thijsmooij
      @thijsmooij 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ECAbrams Ah excuse me, I understand yes! It seems I phrased my question incorrectly though... 😬 I actually meant how you did this, in the video you say that you copy the rotation property and then I don’t really get what happens for the 2 to 3 seconds after that. I only see the info bar showing that some things are being processed. So what are you exactly doing here as in what are you pressing on your keyboard? Hopefully I phrased it better this time :)
