  • These commercials aired on ABC on December 6th, 1986
    1. 93 WPAT
    2. Promo for "World News Tonight"
    3. "Sidekicks" and "Sledgehammer" will not be seen tonight... (ABC, how dare you preempt the show about a talking gun!)
    4. "The Christmas Toy" Intro (I originally posted most of the breaks from my family's original tape of this in "80's Kraft Holiday Commercials" way back in 2008 and have been looking for a complete recording of this special for many years! I'm proud to finally present ALL of the Kraft commercials from this special in much higher quality!)
    5. Kraft (Even though pretty much everything here uses processed food and is super unhealthy, there's just something about the presentation of the dishes here that makes it all seem so lively and festive)
    6. Kraft (I also love the medley of Christmas carols that accompany these)
    7. Kraft "The Christmas Toy" Poster Offer
    8. ABC Station ID
    9. Kraft (Cheez Whiz and Applesauce...what monster at Kraft came up with this recipe?)
    10. Kraft (For the TV Guide Special Recipes: i.imgur.com/K6... and i.imgur.com/kj...)
    11. Kraft "The Christmas Toy" Poster Offer
    12. Promo for "John Grin's Christmas" and "The Perry Como Christmas Special"
    13. Kraft (Our recording of this cut out here and it's so extremely satisfying to hear the announcer say "I'm Ed Herlihy" and wish me a Merry Christmas. It feels like everything's come full circle)
    14. "The Christmas Toy" End Credits ("The Christmas Toy" is one of my favorite Christmas specials from when I was a kid and I try to watch it every year. Over 20 years ago I named one of our cats Ouija after the family cat seen throughout the movie)
    15. Promo for "Swiss Family Robinson" (The music used here is "Reach For The Stars" by Richard Harvey: • Reach for the Stars It was later used in a trailer for "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" TV series)
    16. ABC News Sports Update
    17. Budweiser
    18. ABC News Sports Update
    19. Sega Master System (I love how FAO Schwarz is the local toy store listed at the end since these recorded on WABC in NYC)
    20. Swatch
    21. Promo for "Hollywood Squares"

    These Kraft holiday menu ideas are commercials you just wouldn't see today. As 80sCommercialVault says, they're very festive, and you just don't see these kind of festive holiday commercials today.

    I was so bummed that they rejected my slogan for Kraft Foods: "If It Isn't Kraft, It's Krap!" (I don't understand it, I thought it was a winner...)

    Kraft used to send out recipe magazines once a month and then on a quarterly basis before stopping altogether. They had a lot of really good recipes but they were a lot like in these commercials. There are a couple I still use to this day though. You can go to their website and find their recipes there, as well.

      My mom likes those, too. She misses getting them in the mail, or any kind of mail like that. I think she still has most of them. I’m going to try to sort them for her sometime, she has a lot of little booklets & small magazine recipe books.

    Revisiting the borderline psychedelic holiday Kraft TV Special Recipes has been a Christmas tradition for about 15 years now. If we're lucky, we'll convince a visiting European these are typical American dishes and we all miss Mom's mayonnaise, apple and onion pudding

    9. Kraft- I like how, at the beginning of this commercial, the people's lip syncing and the sounds of the singing are completely out of sync with each other.

    2 things that are products of a bygone era - one company advertising across an entire program, and wholesome Christmas advertising like every single Kraft ad here! (although some of the "ideas" here do seem a little repulsive to me)
    But dang if I wanted a Master System every single time that commercial came on! They advertised a ton in New York but I remember seeing most of the ads on WNYW and not so much WABC!

    No Sidekicks and Sledge Hammer tonight..? Damn 😡

    Sega Master System- early games lineup was so so

  • @yusakug
    @yusakug ปีที่แล้ว +9

    While I was solely a Nintendo kid growing up, I was always curious about the Master System. Problem was very few if any stores in my area carried it, so games were hard to find, and I didn't know anyone who had one back in the day. It wouldn't be until my best friend got a Genesis for Christmas of 89 that I would get to try a Sega home game, and I would get a Genesis myself for my 14th Birthday in July 91.

      I knew a kid who had a Sega Master System. He never told anyone about it. I didn't even know he had one until I had visited his house. Poor kid looked almost ashamed of having it, like his family was too poor to get an actual NES. Like a kid who wanted a Game Boy got something from Tiger Electronics. lol

    • @80sCommercialVault
      @80sCommercialVault  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The Master System was priced at $200, $50 more than the price of the NES.

    10:35 I was born in 1985 and really missed out on growing up with the Master System, but I eventually got some really good games many years later and still enjoyed the likes of Phantasy Star, Golden Axe Warrior, Golvellius, Rastan, Zillion, Kenseiden, Shinobi, OutRun, and many more.

    • @80sCommercialVault

      The Master System was really only successful in Europe and Brazil, where the NES flopped primarily due to poor distribution.

    11:04 - With the mannequins, the store display window, and the motorcycle, this commercial reminds me of the romantic comedy, Mannequin, which would come out just two months after these commercials aired in February 87. Guess this was a popular idea around this time.

    Jump to about 9 years later, and that Christmas toy gets a short lived series on Nick Jr before Blues Clues dominated the preschooler time slot for years to come.

      "The Secret Life Of Toys" aired on The Disney Channel, not Nick Jr.

    The move of World News Tonight was a huge deal since all the 6:00 newscasts by the Big 3 stations ran an hour (and a sigh of relief for the person in charge of WABC's schedule, as that provided an opening for "Jeopardy" after nearly two years of struggling to find a suitable time slot - though they still had trouble finding a companion show under WCBS let the rights for Wheel of Fortune lapse in 1990)

      I actually way way prefer the fuzzier version. It feels like the 80s, to me. I mean, most - or even all? - stuff I see from back in the eighties has that fuzzy, taped-with-a-old-vcr-tape look to it, and, weird as this might sound, that's part of the happiness/nostalgia of it, to me ....I don't remember tv being all super crazy crisp and clear back then (I could be wrong of course) so the fuzzy quality makes it feel more legit, and more nostalgic.

    Wait who is John Grin? Is that just the main character? But it doesn’t sound like Ebenezer Scrooge? I’m confused.

    • @80sCommercialVault
      @80sCommercialVault  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's a loose retelling of A Christmas Carol. The Ebenezer Scrooge character is named John Grin instead.
      It's not too uncommon to change Scrooge's name for an adaptation, especially if it's set in modern times. Example: Frank Cross is the name of Bill Murray's character in "Scrooged".
